This is uncharted territory for me

Really? Drafting higher is certainly no guarantee but it sure can help. Otherwise why would people trade up.
Why would people trade down? Why did teams like the Bengals, Browns and Lions draft high for years while teams like the Steelers, Packers and Patriots drafted low?

Saying the draft is an inexact science is a huge understatement and drafting high (ostensibly) helps a team once, there are six more rounds after that.

We were extremely active in the FA market. Very unlike us. What did all that do? Anyone want to research the results of these guys?

I won't.
Jack is an A in my book. Cost=$$$

Larry Ogubjobi B+, has being good, playing in a 2 DL front doesn't help anybody when TJ is not there. Cost= $$

Daniels B-, pass pro has improved. Cost =$$

Levi Wallace C. Cost = $

Mason Cole B-, tough not to be better than the green experiment fiasco. COST = $

Gunner F. No comment required. Cost =$$$$

Malik Reed D-. Hasn't really done anything despite coming with some previous accolades. Cost = $.

Kazee Incomplete, he was looking like a huge addition due to his versatility and hawkish abilities, too bad he got injured (plus the 3 game ban, maybe that's why he was so cheap and available). Cost = $.

The Steelers made a lot of moves with little money available actually. I think Kahn is the least of our problems right now.

If we want to include Chuks in this list, he looks like a B-, probably our best lineman, as hard as it is to digest, an above average guy that doesn't get your QB killed with good pass protection and is a mediocre run blocker. Cost= $$.

Note: the cost is based on the contract in comparison to the position played. A DT in a 8M contract is way cheaper than a returner in a 5M one.

Because they suck at drafting, We have been pretty good at drafting later, not perfect with Burns or JJ but great with TJ. People trade down because they are weak at multiple positions. I would say the Patriots have been pretty terrible of late drafting low and trading down. The Bengals finally got some right but had to use high picks to do it. The Lions, well they suck. It is still easier to get top talent drafting high than low or it gives you the opportunity to turn one pick into multiple decent picks instead of the opposite in moving up. We could use a few high picks.

man, remember when we were 11-0 a few years ago?

are there any websites that show breakdown of steeler seasons? I recall starting a season 0-4 several years ago, but I can only find final records, not game-by-game wins/losses.

And the Steelers are weak or old at multiple positions: OL, DL, ILB, DB If the Steelers do end up with a top 5 pick, trading down is probably the best option.

Also consider this: Five games into the season, if the 2022 draft were held today, where do you suppose the 52nd overall pick George Pickens would be drafted?

I don't dispute we do well sometimes with later picks, particularly WR. It still is a no brainer that it is easier to draft well from higher spots, if you know what you are doing already. I would say OL isn't as big a need as play calling makes it seem. DB isn't as big a need as current injuries make it seem. DL we have some young guys who can become long term starters so maybe we get one high pick there, ILB we need one although I think Bush has played better than some give him credit for this year, but not top 10 pick good by any stretch. I would address that position in free agency and just draft the best player available or trade down if we end up top 10.

Excellent post by the way, thanks Litos

I am incredible just ask my wife, thank you for noticing. I firmly stand by my sentiment that we constantly as fans feel our talent is better than it truly is, which is natural. In some cases by a lot. Ridicule me all you want but while Tomlin is fa from perfect I truly believe he is a better coach in some areas than many of yinz think. Particularly in getting the most out of certain players like a Bell or Brown. His biggest fault is his stubbornness. I would be ok with a change if he retires but I don't want to see him fired. I think he has earned the chance to try and do a rebuild if he wants to. We kept Noll around well past his prime years.
So the Rooney's kept Noll around probably a few years to long....so why not hold onto Tomlin for a few to many also. Great logic. Let's not learn from our mistakes in the past.

This coming draft could be the highest pick since I became a steelers fan in 1973. ******* crazy when you think about it could be the highest draft pick we have had since Bradshaw. The next highest was Tim Worley at #7 in 1989.

I forget where at in the draft Joe Greene was picked (my bad) but I think he was up there as well.

Before your time I realize.

I would rather we kept a guy a few years too long versus being the Browns. For better or worse loyalty is part of what makes us who we are. it isn't always the best decision in the short run but I think there are benefits to it from a franchise perspective.

Brady will eat Tomlins bacon on Sunday.

We could debate Tomlin has been kept too long. There is one aspect of being the Browns as mentioned there is the other aspect that this season the team is playing like the worst version of them.

Not you but with some fans in general I am just surprised there is still loyal Tomlin fans that don't want him replaced.

Haven't they seen enough?

Really. What could the Steelers and Tomlin be doing worse that would change the minds of those supporting Tomlin?
I guess we know why Colbert retired when Ben did.

I would personally say this is his first really bad season and he does get the benefit of the doubt for a year considering the QB change. Despite many peoples feelings about him he has earned the right to have a truly bad season without getting canned. It happens we just haven't had to deal with it in long time. It sucks, but many coaches have had great comebacks from a bad season. I want to see if it makes him grow as a coach. If not I hope he retires. He doesn't deserve to be fired based on the tradition of the Steelers.

I am not looking forward to it, but I think this may be a case of them having to get pretty bad for a year or two to turn it around. You just have to hope it doesn't become a more long term thing. The Steelers went into that '80s funk, it took a little, but they finally got bad enough to get that '87 draft headed by Rod Woodson that helped pull them out after a while. Of course we know they got low enough after '03 for Ben and the results of that. It is kind of impressive that they have remained competitive for as long as they have without getting lower more often.

I just hope they have someone other than Mike Tomlin trying to lead them out of this. Again, I like the guy, this isn't a rip Tomlin rant. But the results are not good. They need to move on.
There is no heart or passion from this team other than a few players. They are a reflection of the head coach, you know the guy who just stands there in his aviators looking off into space...once in a while you see him speak into the headset, probably asking the coaches in the booth where they want to have dinner that night...LOL....it's a clown show.

Here's what a great coach who loved his team, loved his guys looks like. Now imagine Tomlin even thinking of doing something like this.. Everybody said Bradshaw was off his meds when he said Tomlin was a do nothing coach, dude was EXACTLY right..:ROFLMAO:

At least we won’t have a winless record.

Yep, leave that to cleveland and detroit.................................. possibly tampa bay (I think they went winless for about 26 games)
