That's what new NT Benton told reporters what Tomlin told him. Tomlin didn't deny, but said he will talk to him about being more savvy with reporters.
I criticize Tomlin a lot.....but absolutely love this. Exactly what I believe. Stop running around teams and just roll over them.

There is a REASON players want to play for Tomlin & come as Free Agents...

Tomlin is the premiere Black Head Coach who the black players hold in the highest of esteem in the NFL & his recruiting skills are very, very good....

Tomlin is a HUGE reason people wanna come play in the Burgh...

Who cares that he’s black. He’s a good coach.

Race should not be an issue in this.

I agree...But the reality is black players want to play for Tomlin who just so happens to be a great black coach...People here diss our great coach but he makes connections other coaches just can't......Maybe a better word for "race", is "culture" ??? All I know is Tomlin is a great Ambassador for the Sport & I am proud to have him as our Coach

Fair comment. Too bad it doesn't extend to assistant coaches.

Finally Tomlin understood that weapons, weapons, weapons, doesn't work if you don't have a solid base in the trenches. It just took him about ten years ...
What changed between those last 10 years and this year?
One thing was Kevin Colbert is no longer running the draft.

well, you don't have Ben anymore to cover the warts etiher. Ben had a good Oline for probably only a 3rd of his career
Ben wasn't responsible for talent acquisition. Colbert was.
And, if we're being honest, the quality of even his free agent acquisitions didn't exactly wow folks. Except for possibly last year. But, the last 10 years of Colbert's tenure didn't bring anything like the talent brought in this year.
Maybe it's Weidl. Maybe it's Kahn. Maybe it's Tomlin finally being free of Colbert. Who knows? It could be all three; or maybe just luck this year. We'll see if a pattern develops though.

I mean maybe Tomlins philosophy of drafting changed when he realized he didn't have a HOF QB anymore and had to adapt the team strategy

Or maybe Colbert's never did. However, Tomlin is still here and Colbert isn't. And, you're right, the philosophy HAS changed.
Maybe Colbert was in the way of that change. Maybe Khan/Weidl brought Tomlin around to their way of thinking. Maybe Tomlin was instrumental in the change of philosophy. What we pretty much can be sure of is that Colbert wasn't responsible for it.

The biggest game changer in this years draft was drafting 17 overall (which allowed us to trade up without giving up too much), and having the Bears be the worst team in the league last year.

Colbert i'm sure helped orchestrate the Claypool trade...so his "hands" were on this years draft again..

I know it's something we've been talking about since all the Steelers OL began to retire. It's taken longer than we would've liked, but thankfully the team has the mindset they have to be physical and win games in the trenches.
jesus christ i hope this spells the end of the jet sweeps.

I felt they hindered Kahn by allowing Colbert to stay on until the draft was over.

Fast forward and I think Kahn could have handled it very well without Colbert.

Honestly, I felt last year like Colbert only stayed to reflect any pressure from choosing a QB off of the next GM… if they didn’t get pickett and trabisky flopped and whatever low round guy crapped out, it isnt on Kahn or whomever… just a retired Colbert

You’re probably right, BUT I think Coach Tomlin would have taken the heat fro both Fighting Pickett and The Mitch.

Coach Tomlin made it very clear that The Fighting Pickett was his QB and had been watching his maturation the entire time at PITT.

Berm approves of this thread...
Say it aint so Berm!

I think referring to Tomlin as great black coach is ridiculous.

As ridiculous as saying Belichick is a great white coach....what a coincidence...the Patriots do (or did) have a lot of white players. White players must like playing for him! LOL

Wouldn't it be better to just to say that Tomlin is a great coach period?...and that players like playing for him?

That didn't really patch anything up. Is Belichick a great white coach?

"Great black coach" aside from being subjective, sounds tacky and patronizing.
What you really mean is that black players want to play for Tomlin because he's black period...that he's a great coach for black players, not that he's a great black coach.

So all that needs to be said is what has been said for years...

Players want to play for Tomlin. He's a player's coach.

While I agree and applaud so many of your points…It’s just not the world we live in. To think Tomlins common culture never tips the scales, never plays, or has played a part in any players final decision to come here & play is a bit on the Pollyannic side...
