Tomlin stepping down

He will come out with a book first. And then ge will talk jabberwocky for NBC.

Whoever they bring in is going to have a hell of a tough hill to climb to rebuild this team. In addition, we are going to be in CAP hell for a while too. There are too many over the hill, inflated contracts, and lack of depth to try to fix. This team needs a massive enema and a rebuilding from the top down. Fans need to be patient and give the new regime time to re-build and right the ship. IF Omar was actually responsible for building this team as it sits today, he should be shown the door as well. I don't envy the new regime or what they need to do.
Actually, the cap situation is not too bad. Some of those on overinflated contracts are likely to be let go as the dead money on most of them is manageable. The only players with large dead money if let go are Watt and Metcalf and a new coach with new schemes and coaching staff might be able to make better use of them. The likes of Ramsey, Jonnu Smith, Echols, Elliott, Heyward, Queen etc are all sub $5m dead money hits. I'm not including Freiermuth and Highsmith as I think they would be retained.

Is it really that tough a hill to rebuild the team? They've got a few young players on Oline and DLine, a catching tight end and a blocking tight end, a strong outside linebacker unit, a reasonable inside linebacker unit, Porter at cornerback. Sure there are individual positions on the Oline (left tackle and left guard) and Cam isn't getting any younger on DLine, but realistically you can't have studs and young future studs at every position. To me the main areas that need to be upgraded with younger talent are the secondary, wide receiver unit and quarterback. Receiver, secondary, left side of Oline can be fixed in a couple of years (Oline might be done by a change in scheme and coaching). Quarterback is the one position where they need to be patient and wait for the right one and then once they have the right one, follow the development plan and not be pressured into playing them early, like they were with Pickett (not that I'm saying things would have turned out differently if they'd not started him year 1).

Oh man ... the rumors. Y'all remember all the rumors that come with a coaching search? The national media will be all over this search ... spreading half-truths, lies and blank blank lies.
Let’s get the ball rolling….I’ll start the first one ………. Bill Cowher was just seen exiting The Pittsburgh Airport.
( I was too lazy to find that certain airport pic. )

I know people seem to love Danny Smith, but there is nothing special about our special teams other than Boz.
I thought the same thing. Wasn’t too long ago that everyone was yelling about his job too.
Our punting this year has been average at best. While we see some landing inside the 20, we rarely see inside the 10 or 5 yard line that I see others do. We haven’t had an electric punt or kickoff returner for ages. I’m not sure if this is all his department?

I feel weirdly sad about this. Not because I don't think he needs to go, I guess because I hoped he might be able to turn it around. Players seem to really like him.
Of course that is an emotion that is understandable he did have success here. It just became not enough success time to move on. Every team gets to that point. He had a good run..

Their kickoff coverage was excellent this season.

Their punt coverage was excellent as well.

Boz of course is All-Pro worthy. Waitman had a good 2nd half and was very good last night after a spotty first half. Their return game was not much but I can't remember a fumbled return. So all-in-all, pretty darn good.

the Pickens deal was ignorant. Granted, he was being a head case and likely would have or could have escalated that with DK, but dude is talented. I believe the passing game would have been relevant with both Pickens and DK.
I think Kahn lost on the money part for DK(too much), got too little for Pickens, paid too much for DK relative to Pickens, and the season stats would bear that all out. So Kahn gets the Triple L on arguably the Steelers greatest area of weakness this season.

And, if he wasn't calling those shots, I hope the one that did has left the building or is being helped out the door now.

I remember a KR letting the ball bounce into the end zone and walk away giving up a TD....

Where did you get that from? The official statements from Tomlin and the Steelers only stated he is stepping down as Steelers head coach, nothing about stepping away from football.

He's fried and needs to recharge. He would be nuts to go right back at it,but if he does, the Steelers will get compensation.

A bit surreal hearing the news today.

There was so much smoke around Tomlin leaving, it's not entirely a surprise even though it seems like he's still passionate about coaching. We heard rumblings of him leaving as well as the TV job. During that rough stretch in November, he just looked tired like I've never seen before. His postgame PCs weren't the same.

He's had a good career and deserves some time away. I hope he enjoys it, but also recharges to allow the Steelers to trade him like the Saints did with Payton.

This is one of those moments in time that you remember forever.
Because as a Steeler fan it’s an occasion that obviously does not happen very often during our lifetime.
In fact, since 1969 they have been more popes in the Vatican than there have been professional football coaches in Pittsburgh.
