Tomlin still sucks

Tomlin is an overrated wind bag. I'll still never forget last year when we traveled to London on Friday for a Sunday game. The Vikes were there on Tuesday. Nothing like getting the team adjusted to the time change, Mike. That was all on Tomlin.

yeah, but he obviously made the right call once again...right? I mean we dominated the Vikes.

I was at the Foreskins vs. Steelers game in DC back in 2008. We were a well oiled machine and the Deadskins were an overrated bunch of nothingness. Tomgenius decided to start the game off with an onsides kick. That was for me the first sign that the man had zero concept of how to win in the NFL. Why on Gods green earth would you kick an onsides kick unless you really needed a turnover? We of course failed to recover the kick and the fans in DC were whipped into a frenzy even though it was at least 40% B&G in the stands. Our D held the skins to a FG, but before long it was 6-0 skins. Of course even though Ben didn't play the 2nd half we won 23-6....but why take such an unneeded risk against a team that you could clearly dominate? Oh yeah, he is a ******* idiot.

Tomlin isn't "dumb" as in lacking intelligence. He is, however, incredibly football-stupid.

Tomlin is all talk. I'm sure the guys love him because Tomlin acts like a player not a coach. His drafts are abysmal and his game day coaching is about as bad as you'll ever see.

but if we lose at home to Cleveland, ill **** turds of malcontent.

If we lose at home to Cleveland the season is over. Sorry, it's only one game but if you can't beat that team in your building on a day that your franchise honors it's greatest coach and a crowd that will be whipped in to a frenzy then you are going to suck *** and suck *** bad.

My take on Tomlin is this....he just tries to be like one of the guys. I know he is a good person, I really do....in that aspect I like him a lot. He has a charitable side to him and says all the right things. The problem is that he seems to be a friend more than a coach. Cowher had his players respect but he would not hesitate to chew their *** if they needed it and to me that always kept his players on edge which is what you need in the NFL. Many of the players during the Cowher era were some mean *** SOB's who were a direct reflection of their coach. I don't see that anymore. Just my opinion.

Might want to check history a bit closer. The 1980 SB was a win over a 9-7 Ram team after wins over a bad Miami team and a Houston wildcard team.

I am 53, so I remember those years very well. Houston was a VERY good team, with Earl Campbell driving the offense, a very good receiver in Ken Burrough, a decent QB in Dan Pastorini, a superb DE in Elvin Bethea, a very solid LB'er in Robert Brazile, a safety who had something like 12 interceptions.

That Oilers team went 11-5, and played in consecutive AFC Championship games.

After he was fired, Bum Phillips said that the main reason he was no longer coaching the Oilers was "playing the Pittsburgh Steelers 6 times in 2 years."

It was won late on what I guess you'd consider were 2 lucky bombs to Stallworth. I ain't given that one away any more than I am the 2008 win. I also do have to wonder what your qualifications are for considering Tomlin as dumb. Not something I've seen from his peers or people who know him well.

Please tell me how bad the Miami team was that year. They were 10-6 and had the 4th ranked defense in the league. They had a better record and a hell of a lot better defense than any team the Steelers played in the playoffs in 08' outside of the rats who had a rookie QB.

Steeltime has already shown you where Houston was a good team.

When the second stringers of the Eagles run it down the throat of your first string Defense it isn't about scheming, it isn't about player evaluation, and it certainly isn't about temper tantrums. It's about 7 years of piss poor drafting, OC experiments, lack of identity, pride, coaching, fire, intensity and intestinal fortitude. Sure it was a meaningless preseason game in an ever increasingly pansy assed NFL thanks to that ****** of a commissioner in terms of stats and record, but it Should matter to these players pride. What happened to representing our city? It's heritage? Us? What we saw was blank stares from Haley and Omar epps on the sidelines and Dick Lebeau spitting chip Kelly's load out of his mouth after each play. Holy **** was that embarrassing.

Bad drafting sums it up. Very few of Cowhers players remain. I hold out hope this last draft has a few gems or at least one home run.

If the preseason philosophy is to experiment to determine what works, could that be the reason for the slow starts in regular season?
Seems to me they should know what they have by the 3rd preseason game and go with that, rather than taking to game 4 of the regular season the figure it out.

I am guessing this is Troy's last year, he was so pissed vs the Eagles. I agree 100% with your post.

Also it's not the Steelers fault that the 8-8 Chargers were up next. The Chargers upset Peyton Manning and the 12-4 Colts in the wild card round
and the Chargers got hot at the end of that season winning their final four. Remember the Steelers were a Ryan Succop fg away from making the post season at 8-8 after finishing the season with a fury. It's stupid as a fan to try and nullify a SB because of who you played. The Steelers were also one drive away from beating the Packers in the 2011 Super Bowl despite playing poorly early on. You think Peyton Manning is gonna apologize for beating a mediocre Chicago Bears team in the Super Bowl. Hell no. Not his problem. As far as people questioning Tomlin's credibility as a coach it sounds more like a personal issue. The bottom line is winning. I've been supporting Tomlin myself but anything less than 9-7 probably won't cut it. One problem with Tomlin may be he's pretty much being handcuffed to allow someone else to coach their style of defense when Tomlin himself comes from the Cover 2 scheme tree of Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith. As this defense has deteriorated over the past couple of years, I would have liked to see Tomlin implement his defense.

That could work just as well as his offense. Handcuffs might be a good thing depending on what he gets handcuffed to. The only thing that I am concerned about with this guy is that by the time he does get replaced he may have actually gotten the experience he did not have when he came in and become a good coach for his next team. It would be truly ironic to have his struggles while he develops trying to learn a tough job while doing it be all that we have. I did not like the hire when it was made but understand the approach. The owners wanted someone that they could mold themselves. By taking someone with out a lot of experience they did not have to worry about a person who had a better way. I also think they owners have a great deal of respect for Tony Dungee and were glad to have someone from his staff even once removed when they looked at Mike.

This thread is absolutely marvelous-

You have people in here questioning a coaches intelligence based on- nothing. People not acknowledging SB wins, because the competition wasnt up to their standards? Love it

The one and only coaching pet peeve I have with the combo of both Tomlin and Lebeau is scheme. This GIF shows it all:

I dont care if you replace Revis or Sherman for Gay in this situation, it is nearly impossible for any CB to cover his WR standing that far back, whilst back peddling. Also, weve been complaining about pressure on the QB- but the WR is SO wide open that the QB needs only 2 seconds to get the ball out his hands. We are basically conceding 6-8 yards on a 3rd and 5.

I know the concept is to limit big plays, but more teams are becoming more efficient and satisfied with dinking/dunking their way down the field. DL and Tomlin have to get our CB's jamming at the line, rather than having them jam down the field for a penalty...

Steeler fans seem split on Tomlin. Personally, I think he's horrendous. What's interesting is, most fans of other teams seem to think he's a very good / great coach. Living in the Philly market, I occasionally listen to the local sports radio station, and even after Thursday's debacle, one of the hosts on the afternoon drive said he still loves Tomlin because he's "old-school". Whatever that means.

I was much more optimistic about this season as compared to last, until the first team defense gave up two long touchdown drives to the Eagles' second- (and partially third?) team offense. That's alarming, and downright embarrassing to a Steeler fan from around here.

Tomlin talks old school football but the product he puts on the field is soft and frankly non descript. Other fan bases do not scrutinize Tomlin like we do and they see soundbites and buy into his shtick with no real understanding of how he is shallow, dim and a wind bagged con man.

Snoop may have been onto something.

I haven't been on the Tomlin sucks bandwagon. Trying to be patient. I have read how the steelers were trying to keep that last group of SB players together and it cost them. So yeah we need to retool and rebuild. I haven't seen enough change or difference in the efforts of the coaching or the FO. I thnk the offense will be fine under haley, ben and Brown and one of our partakers of the heathen weed. The Defense.. has been neglected.. And I cant tell if its poor drafting? Too much input by someone who like the TAmpa 2? Lebeau keeping his old *** mouth shut too much? I don't know. I know lebeau knows wtf he is doing. Is he being over ridden on choices?
We have a coaching staff that is great. Joey porter, carnell lake,, Lebeau ,, Munchak, so I don't think the coaches are clueless.

But I know how a team is prepared to play is on the HC. I have heard all the coach speak I care to listen to anymore. We need results. We got them too late last year. This year I am not sure wtf is going on... But the PITT panthers could have played better on Thursday against the Eagles. At least they would have tried. Our Steelers looked like they didn't care.

Our team was not prepared to play last week. We struggle against mediocre teams. There is no passion on the field. He refuses to make adjustments during the game. His draft picks are suspect and underachieving.

I'm willing to see him through this season, but if things don't change, I will be calling for his head, as well.

I don't know if Tomlin is the reason for the Steelers' recent decline or not. However, I will say this; He is the one constant in this little stretch of mediocrity the team is in.
