Paris terror attack: ISIS says it was behind officer's death on Champs-Elysees

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a terror attack Thursday night on Paris' famed Champs-Elysees, where one police officer was killed and two others were wounded by an assailant killed in the exchange of gunfire.

The assault in the popular tourist area came just three days before a critical presidential election in which security has loomed as a major issue.

The Islamic State identified the attacker as Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki through its Amaq news agency, according to SITE Intel Group, a U.S.-based organization that monitors terrorists' activity online.

Paris shooting: Marine Le Pen calls for all French terror suspects to be expelled after Champs Elysees attack

The gunman who shot dead a policeman on the Champs Elysees in Paris in an apparent Isil-inspired terror attack before being killed has been named as French national Karim Cheurfi.

Authorities earlier revealed Cheurfi - who was jailed for 20 years for trying to kill officers in 2001 - had been under preliminary investigation for terrorism and was detained two months ago but “let go”.
