It's great for getting info at this time of year. The local sportswriters keep a running play by play. It's great for that

• If there is a more jacked up coach in this league than Steelers assistant special teams coach Mike Sellers, I would love to see him. Sellers, a physical specimen as a fullback and special-teams stalwart with the Redskins (where he led the group under current Steelers special teams coach Danny Smith), was always a beast, but he looks like he could bench press most of the players on the team. He promised me he wouldn't get any bigger, but I'm not sure I believe him. If he doesn't stick with coaching, MMA might not be a bad move.

LATROBE, Pa. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp.

Le'Veon Bell left practice Sunday afternoon after experiencing tightness in his hamstring but the second-year running back may not miss any additional practice time, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. The Steelers ended Bell’s day early as a precaution, giving more repetitions to LeGarrette Blount and rookie Dri Archer. Archer, the fastest player on the team, drew one of the biggest cheers from the fans at St. Vincent College when he made a nifty cut and flashed through a hole. Archer has been every bit as fast as advertised and he has lined up in a variety of different positions.
In other injury news, wide receiver Martavis Bryant did not practice because of a groin issue while wide receiver C.J. Goodwin left practice early after falling on his shoulder. Neither player is dealing with a significant injury, Tomlin said. Center/guard David Snow broke his foot Friday during the Steelers’ first practice and he will need surgery.
Tomlin may as well as be a kid the night before Christmas. The non-contact practices in shorts are behind the Steelers as the team is allowed to wear pads and hit for the rest of training camp. Per the collective bargaining agreement all teams are required to conduct two non-contract practices at the start of training camp and the Steelers completed their second one Sunday afternoon though storms forced Tomlin end practice a little bit early. Tomlin said the Steelers will tackle in practice on Monday and that the players who are competing for jobs and roster spots will start to separate themselves. “It’s not football-like. It’s football,” Tomlin said of the practices that will largely take place the rest of training camp. “I’m always excited about who ascends in those situations and who shrinks in those situations. It’s a big step in the process.”
Wide receiver Justin Brown continued to catch everything thrown in his direction though the most notable grab during the Steelers’ second practice of camp may have been turned in by tight end David Paulson. The third-year man stopped a Bruce Gradkowski pass with his outstretched right hand and then pulled it in for a catch in the middle of the field. Paulson needs to have a strong camp as he could be the odd man out at tight end if rookie Rob Blanchflower makes the 53-man roster.
Cam Thomas played left defensive end with the first-team defense on Sunday. Chris Hubbard, who spent last season on the Steelers’ practice squad, played left guard with the first-team offense in place of Ramon Foster. Foster has yet to report to camp because of the death of his mother.

Sunday news, notes
The Steelers' practice was cut short today by thunderstorms, but not before Le'Veon Bell put a scare into the coaching staff by coming off with a sore hamstring.

He was immediately escorted to the training room, but head coach Mike Tomlin said it's not serious.

Rookie receiver Martavis Bryant is also dealing with a slight groin injury that held him out of practice completely. Rookie receiver C.J. Goodwin of California University of Pa. also had to leave after landing hard on his shoulder while trying to make a catch.

Neither of those injuries are considered serious.

Meanwhile, the news for center David Snow wasn't quite as good. He suffered a foot fracture Saturday that will require surgery to repair.

@ During a special teams session, Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown went down to one end of field and practiced on their own with Roethlisberger rolling to his left and hitting Brown with a pass at the pylon.

That was a new thing, and it shows that Brown is intent on making himself more of a red zone threat. It also shows that Roethlisberger is cognizant that he won't have Jerricho Cotchery, who caught 10 red zone touchdowns last season, around this year.

@ I'm not sure which looked better, but on one play during team portion, Roethlisberger checked off a pass to his right and hit Danny Coale down the seam.

In coverage was linebacker Lawrence Timmons. It was a perfect throw and hit Coale in stride. But it had to be a perfect throw because Timmons was running with Coale stride for stride.

Timmons said he's dropped down to 242 pounds to improve his speed. It certainly showed there. Coale was a legit 4.4-4.5 guy coming out of college.

@ I've noticed Cam Heyward running around high-fiving guys and making sure he talks to everyone out there on every play. It's interesting to watch a new leader emerge.

@ Ramon Foster is expected to return to practice on Monday after dealing with the unfortunate passing of his mother.

Guy Whimper replaced Foster today after it was Cody Wallace Saturday.

@ Brown caught a ball in the flat that Jarvis Jones nearly knocked free before Brown re-caught it, split a pair of defenders and then raced down the sideline . . . where he was caught 25 yards downfield by rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier.

Now, Shazier had an angle, but you don't usually see linebackers run down receivers.

Won't happen now, because everyone will be looking for Ben to roll left and hit AB at the pylon in red zone situations.

Inside the ropes: Roethlisberger may have his big receiver

• Ben Roethlisberger has made it known for some time that he would like to have a big receiver. During a team third-down period, Roethlisberger's wide receivers were Dri Archer (5-foot-8), Antonio Brown (5-10), Lance Moore (5-9) and Markus Wheaton (5-11). So who did Roethlisberger throw the ball to? How about 6-7 tight end Matt Spaeth. Spaeth beat rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier on a third-and-7 out pattern that resulted in a first down.

• The third-down period was successful for the offense. The only time the first-team offense didn't convert was when LeGarrette Blount ran off the right side for no gain.

• Archer's strong start continued Sunday with a pretty cutback run that resulted in a substantial gain. However, Archer wasn't perfect, and Roethlisberger let him know it. Archer dropped a pass in the flat during receiver drills. “You can't score if you can't catch it. You can't get a first down if you don't catch,” Roethlisberger said.

• Veteran left guard Ramon Foster will return Monday after mourning the death of his mother. In his absence, Cody Wallace took over his position Saturday, and Chris Hubbard worked with the first team Sunday.

• It's easy to see that Mike Tomlin likes Blount. During an 11-on-11 period, Blount plowed his way forward for about 4 yards, dragging defenders with him. “Way to punch a hole in it 27. That's the way to punch a hole in it, big back. I'll take that,” Tomlin said.

• Roethlisberger and Brown hooked up a team-record 110 times last year. However, that didn't prevent the two from working on play-action passes by themselves while the rest of the team went through a special-teams period on the other side of the field.

• There was a light moment during special-teams practice when special-teams coach Danny Smith, assistants Joey Porter and Jerry Olsavsky, and intern Mike Sellers tried to hold up the punt team from getting down the field from a bunch formation. Porter was able to corral Will Johnson on one try with another try resulting in Smith getting knocked to the ground.

• Rookie linebacker Jordan Zumwalt played inside and outside Sunday, switching places with Terrence Garvin.

• A day after playing at second-team left tackle, Mike Adams took snaps at right tackle.

• Archer, Wheaton, Moore and Jordan Hall returned punts.

LATROBE, Pa. - If Ryan Shazier is destined to be tested, to be initiated, to be targeted and subsequently welcomed into the NFL based on his status as a No. 1 draft pick, guard David DeCastro will have no part in such a conspiracy.

"I'm not into all that," DeCastro, the Steelers' No. 1 pick in 2012, maintained. "I just play football. We're going to play the game and be fair between the whistles. That's the way I like to play football."

That's the way it was done during DeCastro's first summer at Saint Vincent College, when he showed up as the newcomer with buzz and brought with him the hype and pedigree that accompanies all No. 1 selections.

"Nothing out of the ordinary," DeCastro recalled. "Guys are playing football, nothing too crazy, nothing too exciting. Everyone's very professional, just playing football."

Defensive end Cam Heyward (first round, 2011) sensed the game had changed in his first professional training camp, but not because of his draft status.

"I think it was more anxious on my side," he said. "Everybody's going to get tested on the first day to see what you're all about, what you can do. But you can't really do anything until the pads come on."

Inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons (No. 1, 2007) has a different recollection of what that first camp as a first-round pick was all about.

"Of course you're going to have a star on your back," he said. "(Shazier) is going to see how our O-line is. Our O-linemen, they play hard and tough every time. He's going to have a lot of confrontations with them. We're going to see how he handles it."

The pads come on today for the Steelers, and the action on the practice field will ratchet up accordingly. Shazier needs to be ready for that, Heyward maintained, much more than he does any sort of traditions or rituals relating to No. 1 picks.

"It's going to be faster," Heyward said. "It's not going to be OTAs. There's not going to be any room for mistakes. He's got to be ready to go. It's going to be a big jump. You can't make the same mistakes twice."

Nor can you make every play.

DeCastro emphasized realizing as much and learning how to deal with that reality of NFL life was essential in his development.

"It's such a different game," he said. "I can remember maybe one or two times I got beat my last year in college, I vividly remember them. In the NFL, it's not if it's going to happen, it's when it's going to happen. The margin for error is so much smaller. It's just a whole different ballgame.

"You have to be, not physically, but mentally prepared for how to deal with it and how to approach things. Bad things, tough things are going to happen to you. If you can be a resilient and consistent player, that's the key.

"It's tough to learn after you're used to kickin' butt the whole time in college, and then all of a sudden the playing field is completely level. You're fighting uphill rather than shooting downhill on people."

Already, Shazier has impressed DeCastro, among others, during the offseason's Organized Team Activities and minicamps.

"He's fast, he's quick. Geez, he's athletic. We saw it a lot in OTAs," DeCastro said. "We'll see when the pads get on, because that really tells the tale. I'm excited, though. I'm excited for this defense. I'm excited for this camp just to see how everything gets going."

Shazier showed up publicly expressing eagerness and readiness. How he feels after today and subsequent practices in pads will paint a more revealing picture.

"Confidence goes out the window once practice starts," Heyward said. "I hope he keeps it, but if that's all he's got we're in for a rude awakening.

"But I expect him to do well."
