twitter updates from camp

I'm just trying to say that a lot gets made out of these tweets about one single play, and people are ready to anoint someone the second coming, or else to declare them a complete bust.

A few years ago, everyone was talking about Isaac Redman making a big splash in red zone drills. Where is he now? I'm sure if we wanted to, we could also find some tweets about guys that got some negative attention for blowing a play in a big way, and show how they went on to be just fine the rest of the season.

The tweets are good information, but damn if everyone isn't eager to jump to one extreme or the other in reaction to each one.

Sounds like Jarvis may have figured a few things out since last year. Let's hope anyway.
Peezy was the best thing that could have ever happened to Jarvis.

Has anybody noticed if he looks bigger than a safety this year?

Adams also had some good blocks as well from some of the tweets. One thing that was mentioned in one of the articles was the grass was wet on the day they were talking about so we may have slips account for some ugly plays on one side and some good ones on the other. Beachum was getting beat on occasions and also looked good on others, sounds like the rust is coming off.

On a positive note there may be better wide outs on the team than we thought we had in some of the second year guys and free agents. This deep draft does not seem to be tossing out any wow glad we got them players other than the possible top two. But it is still early there may be a surprise or two yet at camp.

I am concerned with the groin injuries though.

I don't think Landry makes the team this year. I think we roll with two QB's on the roster and a QB on the PS.

Wednesday is back to work for Steelers
The Steelers returned to the practice field today after announcing earlier in the afternoon that they would be retiring Joe Greene's No. 75 Nov. 2 when they host the Ravens.

The team gave Greene his choice of games when the ceremony could take place. To the surprise of few, he picked the game against Baltimore.

@ Le'Veon Bell didn't practice again today, but did do some walk-through stuff. It looks more precautionary right now than anything.

The news wasn't as good for rookie tight end Rob Blanchflower. He was in a walking boot after suffering the dreaded high-ankle sprain. Head coach Mike Tomlin said he's likely out a week.

@ I wasn't expecting much out of running back Josh Harris, who was signed Tuesday when David Snow was released injured.

But the former Wake Forest running back showed some good quickness and quickly established himself as a guy to keep an eye on moving forward.

@ Daniel McCullers had himself a nice practice today, blowing some inside runs up.

He looks like he's moving in slow motion compared to everyone else, but when you're 6-7, 352 pounds, you can do that.

Because he does everything a little more slowly than, well, anyone else here, it can sometimes look like he's not putting forth effort. But I don't think that's the case.

During individual blocking/pass rush drills, he flattened Mike Adams on a stunt. It was impressive to see.

McCullers has been running all week as the second team nose tackle.

@ The Steelers held Troy Polamalu out of the first live tackling drill session. Interestingly enough, though, it wasn't Shamarko Thomas who moved into the starting lineup.

Instead, Robert Golden came in at free safety and Will Allen shifted to the strong side.

Golden had a nice shoestring tackle of LeGarrette Blount that saved a touchdown on the first play.

I don't see that as a knock against Thomas, however. Later in the practice, he was back there paired with Polamalu.

@ We got a good glimpse of Ryan Shazier's speed when he jumped a hot route intended for Matt Spaeth over the middle and nearly intercepted a Ben Roethlisberger pass.

@ Polamalu did the same thing later, jumping a hot route intended for Danny Coale and picking off a Landry Jones pass.

@ It seemed like there was a big emphasis on stripping the football today and William Gay did just that against Antonio Brown on a crossing route, getting the ball loose from behind and then scooping it up and going the other way with it.

Gay attempted the same move later in practice, but Brown hung on that time around.

@ Spaeth had his way with Jarvis Jones in one-on-one run blocking drills. The two were paired five times and Spaeth won four of the matchups.

David Paulsen didn't have the same results. He struggled mightily in this test of power against power.

Steelers Camp Report: Day 4

20COMMENTS0EMAILPRINT
LATROBE, Pa. – A daily review of the hot topics coming out of the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:
The competition has started. The separation has not. “One unit will have a good day and piss the other unit off. They’ll come back and win the next one,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday following the second padded practice of training camp. “There’s ebb and flow.” With the first preseason game still more than a week away, Tomlin is using the practices to pit different players against each other and have them hone their technique in the crucible of competition. “We’ve got some guys that have the proper energy and urgency but are still growing in technical areas,” Tomlin said.
Troy Polamalu drew a roar from the crowd at St. Vincent College when the veteran strong safety intercepted a pass that would have easily gone for a touchdown had it been an actual game. Rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier nearly intercepted a pass when he arrived at the same time as a short pass over the middle to tight end Matt Spaeth. There was just enough contact between the two to keep Shazier from hanging on to the ball. The first-round pick looked a little gimpy after the near interception, but Tomlin said Shazier did not get hurt on the play.
Rookie tight end Rob Blanchflower suffered a setback when he sustained a high ankle sprain. The seventh-round draft pick will miss “at least a week,” Tomlin said. Running back Le'Veon Bell (hamstring), linebacker Jordan Zumwalt (groin) and wide receiver C.J. Goodwin (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday.
Rookie wide receiver Martavis Bryant flashed his talent a couple of times Wednesday after a quiet start to camp. The fourth-round pick caught a deep ball early in practice after beating cornerback Lewis Toler in one-on-one drills between the wide receivers and defensive backs. Bryant caught several passes Wednesday and nearly made a spectacular sideline grab of a ball that was slightly underthrown and was ultimately broken up because cornerback Antwon Blake had done a good job of establishing inside position. Bryant did have a bad drop near the end of practice.
There were several highlights from the pass-rushing/pass-protection competition. Nose tackle Steve McLendon knocked Cody Wallace on his wallet after bull-rushing the reserve center and rookie nose tackle Daniel McCullers ran over tackle Mike Adams later in the drill. The offensive line, however, appeared to hold its own as a group in the drill.
It’s tough to get a read on how much progress second-year quarterback Landry Jones is making. The 2013 fourth-round pick completed consecutive passes after showing nice pocket awareness and good footwork during an 11-on-11 drill. The former Oklahoma star, however, took a sack and threw a bad interception on the next two plays. He is still very much a work in progress.

Kaboly: Observations from Steelers training camp practice No. 4
July 31, 2014 by Mark Kaboly

Practice No. 4 is in the books here at an unseasonably cool July day at St. Vincent College.
Here are some quick thoughts about what I saw/have been seeing.
* Daniel McCullers is a monster of a man, and he showed that he can play some football as well. McCullers was active all day on Wednesday whether it was pushing Cody Wallace into the backfield during linemen pass blocking drills or swallowing Dri Archer during the 11-on-11 live tackling period. Now, McCullers looks like he needs to get a little more sense of urgency with his play, but that will come. He is a quiet kid who is just trying to fit in during the early days of camp.
* Speaking of McCullers, William Gay gave TribLive Radio’s Ken Laird the soundbite of the year. “We call him ‘Big Dan’. He reminds me of the movie ‘The Longest Yard’, the big dude that was in there and he started crying and then destroyed everybody,” Gay told Laird. “Me and Troy were just talking, every time we’re going to just walk up and give him a hug. Nice guy. Won’t say too much to you. I told him, ‘Once you get six years in, people are going to be scared to talk to you.’ You’re going to say ‘Get out my face’. I told him, ‘You’re bigger than everybody. Just move people.’”
* Here is a quick list of people who you don’t know (maybe don’t want to know) but are flashing at times. S Jordan Dangerfield: He’s getting some respect with his hits, that’s for sure. CB Antwon Blake: He’s fast … very fast. DE Ethan Hemer: You just keep seeing No. 79 make a play. Oh yeah, it’s flashbacks to Aaron Smith. He looks like him, doesn’t play like him yet. RB Jordan Hall: He took a lick a time or two, but kept on trucking on Wednesday. He’s a tough kid. TE Eric Waters: We knew he could catch from the OTAs, but he can block as well. He is a legitimate player to unseat David Paulson and Michael Palmer.
* There was a sloppy portion of practice on Wednesday when Ben Roethlisberger was forced to huddle again then returned to the line just to have a bad exchange with the center that was recovered by Chris Carter. Landry Jones came in with the second team just to immediately trip over Paulson, who was crossing behind the line of scrimmage at the snap.
* I am seeing a lot more emphasis put on defenders trying to strip the ball. Now, this goes both ways. The offense has to be aware of ball security at all times.
* Matt Spaeth can sure block.
* No fights in four practices. There were two or three in the OTAs alone.
* The crowds here at St. Vincent have been quite large the past two practices. I guess 8-8 is good enough.
* Let’s hope that no Steelers offensive linemen get hurt, because through four practices, it’s obvious that there’s not much to speak of behind the top five or six. There’s some potential there, but nothing ready to jump in and play.
* Mike Adams, who I think has a chance to win the right tackle spot from Marcus Gilbert, got absolutely run over for the second consecutive practice. On Monday it was Shamarko Thomas. Wednesday it was McCullers. I know Adams said he slipped with the Thomas one. McCullers? Well, he is 350 pounds.

Nice news feed guys, thanks for the updates. One thing I see that seems to be in the mix every year is the different take on what sounds like the same play. It happens particularly with different views of the play. Or we will have one guy see six or seven good plays from one guy and at a different time someone else will see six or seven bad plays. That is practice in a nut shell. The only ones that look like out for sure types are the ones that have no high lights and mostly bad plays.

or swallowing Dri Archer

Great, I knew one of the lineman would eat him. Not surprised it was McCullers. Any free agent RB's available?

This is completely off topic, but where did all these mouthy, argumentative ******* on NFL Network come from? There are like 3 women on there seem to be constantly talking ****, acting like know-it-alls and generally trying to stir up an argument on the panel of hosts on every subject. They all appeared at the same time and they are driving me nuts.
