I never said kinder or gentler, hell it was more hostile then it is now. But there was more actual football discussion. If you post anything non steeler related, the initial response is "it's not steelers who cares". And even then, the only discussions we can carry on here are Cowhers players winning for Tomlin, Timmons sucks, and Archer is *fill in the blank*

There's more "discussion" (I use that term lightly in this instance) and uproar from our THIRD ROUND situational player pick, than our every down first round ILB pick.

You are aware it's the off season, right? Come football time the traditional "yeah we won, but not by enough" and "if we looked that way against team x, we will NEVER win anything" posts will be back. I remember one of those from the year we went to beat the seachickens, we looked bad against one particular opponent, and this board was imploding, people posting how if we couldn't trounce this team, we weren't going anywhere, blah blah blah. Then we're in the Superbowl, AND we win, and all those same people are here jizzing about how awesome it is.

I was taught to be a different kind of fan, you don't **** on your team. If they are blatantly doing something stupid, I have no problem with having a discussion about whatever that thing might be, and what might be done differently to resolve it. (For example, 3 yards and a cloud of dust, otherwise known as the run run pass punt offense, was something I was sick to ******* death of seeing from our beloved team). But, we needed a quarterback, and we seemed to have issues picking a decent one, so we were stuck with run run pass punt. The way to fix that was to get a decent qb, something we finally did with Ben.

I wanted them to pass more, but when they did, it often ended badly, due to how ****** our qb play was.

Listen, I'm not sure where all the pining for the old days stuff is coming from, and I can't tell you why person x or y has left, but I fully support anyone who isn't enjoying their experience here to happily move on, pissing in the soup isn't going to make it taste any better. It's a message board, I swear, it's like this is the first one some of you have ever seen.

The Best News

As far as we know, there were no additional major injuries in this camp session. Maurkice Pouncey was kept out of practice, as was Ramon Foster, Matt Spaeth, Will Johnson, Jordan Zumwalt, Jarvis Jones, and Will Allen. Returning today was Ryan Shazier. Le'Veon Bell was dressed and participated in some drills, but was for the most part kept out of harm's way.

Pouncey was a scheduled day off. There was no reason for alarm in re any of the other above-mentioned players. As we all know by now, Greg Warren has a serious enough injury to keep him out for four weeks, but not serious enough to have to IR him. If four weeks is realistic, he could even miss only the season opener.

And finally, the comment to yesterday's post stating Ben had left the field limping, with ice on his knee, apparently meant nothing much, as he had nothing at all on his knees and looked very much like usual. However, don't forget to set out some Tibetan prayer flags or your other petition of choice in a local stream. More on this later.

A Focus on Offense

There was a change in format today from that used yesterday. Whereas on Wednesday all activity was focused on one football field, today, perhaps because it was the last day of practice and the fields were dry, they used all three fields. This meant that almost everything we saw of Bills vs. Steelers drills were Steelers offense against Bills defense. Even the special teams drills took place on the far field, and so we couldn't tell much about them.

And so as not to waste a precious moment, there were still two or even three different sets of Steelers/Bills joint drills on the closest field. So once again we were presented with far more than we could reasonably expect to take in.

The news on offense was mostly good. The first half—dozen passes of the receivers on defensive backs drill were knocked down by Bills defenders, so the Steelers decided they had better get serious about it. Even this drill was split in half across the field, with Ben Roethlisberger on the near side and Bruce Gradkowski on the far side.

The remaining passes were fiercely contended by the Bills DBs, but almost all of the passes were actually caught by the Steelers receiver to whom it was thrown. This was even true of Bruce Gradkowski's receivers, we are happy to note.

Spectacular catches were made by Martavis Bryant in the end zone, Marcus Wheaton in the flat, and Antonio Brown in the back of the end zone. Derek Moye, Justin Brown, C.J. Goodwin, and Lanear Sampson all had numerous catches, and Lance Moore demonstrated on one catch how old age and cunning can win out over youth and enthusiasm.

In addition to these drills and the multiple defensive drills taking place on the other fields,, Landry Jones and Brendon Kay were running similar drills with the tight ends and running backs at the other end of the near field. David Paulson was doing his best to make a case for his retention, although that is still undoubtedly going to come down to whether he's learned to block anyone, ever. LaGarrette Blount demonstrated that he is as proficient at catching as he is at running.

To be fair, these drills tend to favor offense. From the little I could see, the Steelers defense wasn't faring all that much better on the far field.

The Most Spectacular Play of the Day

In an odd-couple moment, the man who can't throw threw a beautiful 60ish yard pass to the man who can't catch, who easily beat his defender and ran it in for a touchdown. Bruce Gradkowski showed a bit of the spark with which he ran rampant through the Steelers defense when he was working for the Oakland Raiders, and threw a gorgeous pass to the man the league mocked the Raiders for drafting, Darius Heyward-Bey. It was a moment to make Al Davis shed a tear, if he still could.

This was not an anomaly for Heyward-Bey either, as he had several other clutch catches. And Gradkowski seemed to have generally improved in accuracy, although he still prevented several potential interceptions.

Role Reversal on Unplanned Violence

Fortunately (this is Ivan speaking,) as on the previous day, there were fights. However, they were reduced by a third. In other words, there were two. Of course, there were also four times as many policemen on the field, although only two of them were actually on horseback, probably a necessity to chase down any potential offender, given the speed on this team.

Additional good news is that, unlike the previous day, all fights were initiated by the offense. The headliner was a scrum involving Cody Wallace. At this point the entire Bills defense ran onto the field to help "break up the fight." It was touching to see how committed they were to a peaceful, non-violent practice. Naturally, the Steelers offense responded in kind. Head Coach and Ringmaster Mike Tomlin disappeared into the middle of the scrum, and emerged shortly afterwards, looking not as grieved or disappointed in his men as you might have expected.

It should be noted, the chief instigator, Antonio Brown, was deeply involved in the peace talks. In fact, he didn't quit talking for quite some time, continuing his efforts to bring calm to the troubled waters.

There were other conferences involving a variety of pacifists, including David DeCastro, Marcus Wheaton, and most of the rest of the offensive line, demonstrating the effects of the level-headed leadership of line coach Mike Munchak.

It could also be said that these young men were free from the corrupting influences of Maurkice Pouncey. They gave him that day off just in time!

Winners and Losers of Bills Week

As is always the case, some players have helped their cause over the past three days, while others made it seem more difficult to imagine them surviving into September. While tight ends Rob Blanchflower and David Paulson helped themselves, it appeared that Eric Waters fell behind. Brice Davis comes under the category of "One man's misfortune..." as he will have an opportunity to prove his value if he can successfully replace Greg Warren this weekend.

Wide receiver Kashif Moore had some nice catches today, but they may not be enough to keep the Turk from his door. Derek Moye didn't hurt his cause so much as he didn't gain any ground on anyone in front of him. Conversely, Martavis Bryant showed more confidence and surer hands than we seen thus far, and is showing some distinct flashes of the abilities which attracted the Steelers' scouts' notice.

Once again we did not see anything from any quarterback not named Ben Roethlisberger to give us confidence in any interim period which may have to be filled. Let us fervently hope it won't be necessary.

LaGarrette Blount continues to impress, as did Tauren Poole. The new guy, Stephen Houston, did not thus far carve out a spot for himself. Dri Archer showed just enough flashes that Rebecca thinks they shouldn't let him on the field again until the regular season begins. She doesn't want to see this lovely new toy broken before we've even gotten all the presents opened.

A Few Final Thoughts

First, when sending up those prayers for the health of Ben Roethlisberger, you might throw in a few for the offensive line, because the second line did not impress for the most part.

Although we had little opportunity to observe the defense in action, we did see a few of the early drills before the teams joined forces. Once again one could not help but notice Dan McCullers. It isn't just the fans who are eager for him to succeed. During the sled drill McCullers, unlike most of the other defensive linemen, was asked to repeat the exercise with a different position and approach. This was not because the others all did it perfectly by any means. They really want this kid to pan out, from all appearances.

To our knowledge, Ike Taylor did not drop a pass today. Of course, to our knowledge, Ike Taylor was not tendered the opportunity to do so. However, he was wearing gloves, the nature of which we speculated upon freely.

Saturday night will hold even more than the usual fascination for us. Part of what we will be watching for is how many players on both teams appear to be marked men. Baseball has the outlet of plunking. Perhaps something similar needs to be developed for football in these instances. It seems to me that more than the usual number of resentments and grievances between two teams could have accumulated as a result of these practices. All I can say is, thank God the Steelers didn't run joint practices with the Ravens...

I fully understand this is the offseason, well it WAS the offseason. Camp has concluded, it's now normal practices and preseason games for a few more weeks. I'm fully aware of the threads that are on their way, and I remember all the "we'll never go anywhere with this team" threads on our way to our 5th SB. That will never change, that will always be here... and it stems from the spoiled Steeler fans that expect a 60-0 beat down every time we step on the field. But in between those posts, used to be a little bit more football commentary, and not just about the Steelers. That's what's been missing and why the threads we do have get so carried away. It's "this is the discussion and we'll drag it into every thread there is because I have nothing else to contribute".

If this were five years ago, every major contract signed this year (specifically Sherman, Revis, and Peterson) would have been discussed, dissected, etc. There wasn't even a mention of ANY of those at all. There was once a free agent thread where people would post ALL free agent movement and discuss whether it was good move or not. This year, if we didn't sign them or cut them, the moves didn't exist. I remember a thread going several pages when Shaub was traded to the Texans.

The pinning for the old days is coming from a lack of football talk. Simple as that, it's like we've turned into Browns fans arguing over picks, and then pitting those picks against each other. There were a lot of intelligent posters who would actually discuss football for weeks, most of those guys have gone and it's easy to see why. Football discussion has no place on here anymore.

Post a new thread then, with whatever you want to discuss, but don't blame this thread which it's very tittle clearly explains what is it's purpose. This thread is an informative one, and I find it very practical and helpful
I get your point, I hope there are more threads and more participation but if you are complaining about it instead of doing something to fix it then you are part of the problem too

Thanks to all the blogs actually about camp. Don't understand why there is so many pissers on this site. Now I'll get the raft. Looking forward to the season and the new players, defeated attitude before the first game is really unproductive is you really are a Steeler fan. Ok give it to me.

All too often when someone attempts to post anything about a non Steeler, or even a former steeler the "who is he" and sarcastic "Mike who?" (refering to Wallace) ********* come out. I noticed an uptick of that recently, so maybe that's where some of that has gone. Though back when peezy went to the finz we had some discussion about him, but there were still many going on with the typical "Joey who" bullshit.

I do get what you're saying, and by "offseason" I meant "not season". I get that it's pre-season, trust me, I have been watching nfl network pre-season replays for a week straight at home, I LOVE that football is back on. I'm all for discussing contracts and prospects and such, I think though some of what you're seeing is the effect of two 8-8 seasons, where any time you attempt to have a rational discussion about a teams move, people will start with the "lets get our own team back to the playoffs before we start talking about such and such teams moves" stuff.

I have a thought though, you want to see more of that discussion, start a thread next time, I'll be people will reply. Heck, I don't even mind if you just post an article, I'll read it, and I might even give an opinion on it. ;)

Oh I know what your saying about the "mike who" stuff. VERY recently, it was brought up that Ziggy Hood got a sack, a poster responds by saying, he's not a steeler anymore so who cares, and in the very next line asks if anyone thinks Max Starks will stick in Arizona. I don't start a lot of threads, but I guess I'm gonna have to start.

You are doing a great job proving my point for me. Let me slow it down for you...that's not funny. None of your posts are funny.

These two stuck out at me. I agree with not showing too much of Archer at this point. From all accounts he has been impressive in camp and in his game time obviously looked fast. I'd rather play it safe the rest of the preseason and not show too much to defensive coordinators. I like the thought of keeping them off balance when we suit up against them then hit them with this little silver bullet for a big gain and leave them scratching their heads. I honestly would just have him field kicks and punts to help him develop that part of his game.

McCullers might end up being the biggest steal(no pun intended) in this draft. If you watch his tape when he played in the 3-4 he looked every part of a round 2 or 3 guy. When they went to the 4-3 he looked more like a 4th round guy which I believe made his stock slip even further than I thought. In these late round picks I wish we'd go more for size speed to try to coach talent up. You can't teach a guy to be 6-7 350lbs but you can teach them to get low and use their size.

Thank god in most im not trying to be. My post earlier was to Insaniti. Did you see me quote him? Therefore it was for him for a reason. He probably didnt think it was funny either. But he knew why i said it. Do i need to slow it down for you?

Steelers' McCullers making steady progress

By Scott Brown | August 15, 2014 10:00:20 AM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. -- He didn't qualify as one of the stars of training camp.

But he didn't look lost or overwhelmed either. That would have been pretty easy to tell since it's hard to miss Daniel McCullers when the 6-foot-7, 352-pound defensive lineman is on the field.

Steelers Preseason Live
Follow reporter Scott Brown's live updates from training camp in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
Preseason Live

McCullers -- "Big Dan" to Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin -- has put himself in position to make the 53-man roster after a solid camp.

And probably the surest sign that McCullers, who turned 22 on Monday, is squarely on the Steelers' radar is how much attention he receives from veteran defensive line coach John Mitchell.

Mitchell, during a practice earlier this week, could not contain his excitement after watching McCullers help the defensive line string out a running play. Mitchell offered encouraging words seeing McCullers move so well laterally.

Of course, Mitchell is also never shy about telling his players what they need to do to get better, and McCullers is no exception.

He got a full dose of Mitchell at training camp.

"It doesn't matter if it's on the field, off the field, when you walk into the elevator, he's always going to be on you," said McCullers, who was the second of the two sixth-round picks that the Steelers selected in the 2014 NFL draft. "It did take a little getting used to but I had to adjust. That's just how he is. You need that in a coach to be on you and make sure you do everything right because he wants you to be perfect."

McCullers has been far from perfect.

But he does not appear to be as big a project as initially thought after the Steelers took the Tennessee product with the 214 th overall pick of the draft.

McCullers did well enough during the first two weeks of training camp to receive a decent amount of playing time in the Steelers' preseason opener last Saturday night. McCullers logged 22 snaps -- Hebron Fangupo, who is ahead of him on the depth chart played just eight -- and was credited with a tackle in the Steelers' 20-16 loss to the Giants.

It will be interesting to see how much McCullers plays Saturday night against the Bills.

Steve McLendon, who missed the preseason opener because of a concussion, is expected to play against Buffalo and make snaps less plentiful for the reserves.

The Steelers, however, probably want to take another extended look at McCullers given the strides he made at St. Vincent College.

"He's doing a nice job of really working the techniques and really getting better from an assignment standpoint," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "He has a distinguishing characteristic -- he's an enormous man and one that's difficult to move. But I think day in and day out he's proven that he's more than that. He likes to play football [and] he comes to work every day. I like the progress that he's making but obviously he has some progress ahead of him."

And now I will add my obligatory comment... Looks like Big Dan is coming along. There was talk of him also playing DE. I wonder if those plans have been scrapped. If he can play both thats one less DL we would have to keep. Freeing up another roster spot. Seems like last years camp sensation Arnfelt has regressed or being outplayed by Mauro who recieved more playing time against the GMen.

Go back and read through the tweets from Kozora from the Depot and Kaboly, you'll see that in a few they question his sense of "urgency" to paraphrase. And, I didn't say he wasn't making positive plays, but that he was showing that he was raw: i.e, he's missed a few catches that he should have made, ran some wrong routes, had Tomlin get on him, etc. Note that I did not imply that he could not overcome this. As for not suffering any sort of hangover from his "less than stellar debut", that remains to be seen doesn't it? (and, I hope you are right).
I don't see it as an Archer v. Bryant thing. I hope they both turn out to be All-Pros. That said, to me it is apparent that Archer is in a better position to provide some help to the offense AT THIS TIME.

Ok, this was before camp, during OTAs buuut:

If you've been following Twitter (Kaboly, Steelers Depot etc.) the past couple days, everyone is heaping praise on Bryant for what he has done in the past week of practice.

It may be that Bryant thought he could get by on talent alone without the hard work and the first preseason game showed him that it isn't the way. Hopefully, he puts in the work to develop his talent. I'm glad he was there in the fourth where we got him. I wasn't expecting him to be there that late, but there may be a reason he was.

Yep, that's been the scenario for the last couple of days, and I couldn't be happier about it for the young man. That still doesn't undermine my point that Archer more appears able to help the team AT THIS TIME. Doesn't mean it will always be that way, but right now, that's the way it is.
As for Bryant, maybe last weeks game served as a bit of a wake up. Maybe it's all slowing down a bit for him and Mann's coaching is starting to take hold. Whatever it is, I hope it continues. I'm not an Archer v. Bryant guy. I'm a "let's hope they all develop and produce for us" guy. Bryant has talent, he was seen as raw coming out. I'd imagine they still see him as raw, but a little less so. In that sense, it has been a successful camp for him.

IMO, McCullers is the gentle giant like in the movie The Green Mile.
dude has the physical part down. I doubt he's a complete dumbass, or he'd likely have not been drafted - or be drafted by the Clowns. He did get a 17 on the Wonderlic.

http://wridit.com/content/nfl-draft-prospect-wonderlic-scores-updated

but what we need is - after he's gotten the proper technique down - is a fire lit under his ***.
