LATROBE, Pa. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:

Rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier limped off the field at the end of practice but Steelers coach Mike Tomlin dismissed it as “a little boo boo.” Shazier, the Steelers’ first-round pick in May, hurt his lower leg after making a nice stop on running back Le'Veon Bell in a red-zone drill. A Steelers trainer appeared to be looking at his right knee but Tomlin sidestepped a question on whether Shazier had indeed hurt the knee. Tomlin said the Steelers came out of practice with “just normal bumps and bruises.”
Dri Archer, as fast as he is, is not just a straight-line speedster. The rookie proved that with one of the most impressive plays of camp. Archer flashed through a hole on the left side during an 11-on-11 tackling drill and turned around several defenders with sharp cuts on the way to a long gain. “Uh-oh, Danny Smith!” Tomlin said after the run to the Steelers’ special teams coordinator. Archer will return kickoffs, and his big-play potential could allow the Steelers to use Pro Bowl wide receiver Antonio Brown only as a situational punt returner.
Tauren Poole also ripped off a long run during the 11-on-11 tackling drill, and the overall success by the Steelers’ ground game during that period left veteran defensive line coach John Mitchell fuming. “They’re knocking our [butts] back,” he said to his players at one point.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was given his first day off at camp, providing more work for Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones. Jones made a bad throw early, waiting too long to pull the trigger on a pass to a wide-open tight end Bryce Davis and then throwing it behind him. Jones rebounded with several nice throws later when he had time to go through his reads. The No. 3 quarterback was also part of the most impressive play of the day after Archer's run. Jones threw a pass that a leaping Justin Brown caught in the back corner of the end zone. Brown, who practiced for a second consecutive day with a visor protecting his broken nose, received a shout out from Tomlin for the catch in the red-zone drill. Rookie wide receiver Martavis Bryant also made a superb grab, showing his speed and length by tracking down a long Gradkowski pass down the left sideline and reeling it in with outstretched arms.
Rookie Stephon Tuitt played left defensive end with the first-team defense with Cam Thomas playing nose tackle for the second consecutive practice in place of Steve McLendon. McLendon was given another day off by Tomlin. Linebacker Jordan Zumwalt (groin) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) did not practice. Rookie cornerback Shaquille Richardson returned to practice after sitting out drills Saturday because of groin tightness.
The Steelers practice Monday from 2:55 to 5:30 p.m. ET. The players are off on Tuesday and return to practice on Wednesday.

Steelers notes: Consistency sought at nose tackle

• If it's Monday, then Steve McLendon must be at nose tackle … or is it Cam Thomas? Or Hebron Fangupo. McLendon is the starter, but defensive line coach John Mitchell said, “We haven't had the same guy play nose since we've come out here. We're trying to find a combination of three guys who can play together and go from there. We're rotating people everywhere.”

• Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu and, again, McLendon had the day off on a wet Sunday. The Steelers issued their first depth chart since camp opened, and Markus Wheaton is listed as a starting wide receiver, with slot receiver Lance Moore behind him. Antonio Brown is listed again as the punt returner. Justin Brown, cut a year ago, is behind Brown at WR, with Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) and Martavis Bryant behind him. Sean Spence, yet to play in the NFL, is behind Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams at ILB. Arthur Moats is behind Jarvis Jones at OLB.

• Will Allen, in his 11th NFL season, is getting plenty of work with the starters as safety Mike Mitchell (groin) heals. Allen was cut by the Cowboys last season, but was immediately picked up again by Pittsburgh, for whom he played from 2010-12. “I'm the third (most experienced on defense) behind Ike Taylor and Troy. Then you've got me and Ben,” Allen said. “I feel great, man, healthy and vibrant and moving pretty well.“

• Special teams coach Danny Smith was back in practice Sunday after leaving Saturday's session early. The day before, he rammed into a metal bench while trying to avoid a play during practice.

• Running back Le'Veon Bell is fighting through a hamstring injury that has limited him during camp, just as a bruised knee and a sprained foot cut short his 2013 camp and put him out for three regular season games. Still, he said, “This year, I'm just smooth sailing. I'm just playing football, I'm not nervous anymore. I'm the leader in the group now, really” — even though LeGarrette Blount is in his fifth season.

INSIDE THE ROPES

• The Steelers apparently survived a scare late during practice when rookie first-round pick linebacker Ryan Shazier limped off the field with a right knee injury. Despite Shazier getting the knee wrapped in ice and sitting out the final few plays of the red zone period, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin referred to the injury as only a “boo boo.” Shazier was having another solid practice, especially during the red zone drill, until he limped off. He chased down Le'Veon Bell when the running back took a screen pass on the first play of the period. Shazier popped Bell for a loss when he tried to bounce a run play outside. That's when Shazier limped off the field.

• The Steelers broke out the Oklahoma drill for the first time in a long while, but used it just for the wide receivers and defensive backs. The drill consists of, in this case, a receiver trying to block a defensive back with another person trying to run between two blocking dummies placed about 10 feet apart. The object is for the receivers to block the corner, and for the corner to shed the block and make the tackle. The receivers held their own, especially Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant.

• Tomlin let first-year tight end Bryce Davis know he needs to finish blocks during tight end/outside linebacker drill. Davis won a rep against rookie Howard Jones, but pulled up before the whistle blew. The two went again and Jones drove Davis to the ground, prompting Tomlin to bark: “See, he didn't let you off the hook. He buried you.”

• For the second consecutive practice, rookie Stephon Tuitt ran first-team reps at left defensive end. William Gay took some snaps with the first-team safeties, and Landry Jones swapped out with Bruce Gradkowski running the first team offense with Ben Roethlisberger getting the day off.

• During the team run period, the Steelers running backs picked up sizable yards by using cutback lanes. LeGarrette Blount cut back with some nimble feet and picked up about 15 yards. Dri Archer, going against the second team, made a fluid cutback on an outside zone run, juked a couple of defenders and sped for about 40 yards.

• Cornerback Antwon Blake broke up a pass in the end zone against the much taller Justin Brown. Later in practice, C.J. Goodwin ran a quick slant just to have Blake reach in and smack the ball away. Later, Blake knocked yet another pass down aimed for Goodwin.

• After a hard rain soaked the practice field for 20 minutes, the Steelers went through a pass-under-pressure period in which the team has to throw the ball from inside its 20-yard line. Tomlin barked out that he didn't want to see any drops in the slippery conditions. Tight end Matt Spaeth dropped the second pass of the period.

• Bryant made some nice red zone catches, but it was a deep pass that was the most impressive. Gradkowski floated a deep ball down the left side. Bryant beat the defender and stretched out and made the 30-plus yard gain.

• Justin Brown made a sweet post corner move on Lew Toller and made a diving touchdown catch in the back of the end zone on a perfect pass by Jones during red zone passing.

Steelers Insider: Wheaton, Brown putting in work

During spring practice, OC Todd Haley remarked that he had trouble getting his own workouts in because Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown were hogging up the team practice facility.

The two receivers have been inseparable in Latrobe, too, often burning the midnight oil together at Rooney Hall watching film late into the night in order to improve their games.

Apparently, it’s working.

Wheaton was listed as the No. 2 receiver behind Antonio Brown on the Steelers’ initial depth chart released Sunday. Although it’s hardly surprising, Wheaton says he relishes the chance to hold down that spot.

“I’m glad they’re pushing me to take that spot,” said Wheaton, who had six receptions for 64 yards as a rookie. “Obviously, I want that spot but there’s lot of great guys competing for that spot.”

Veteran CB Ike Taylor is impressed with Wheaton’s confidence in Year 2.

“The sky is the limit,” Taylor said. “I don’t think he knows how good he can be.”

Brown, on the practice squad last season, is holding down the No. 4 spot, ahead of both Darrius Heyward-Bey and Martavis Bryant. Derek Moye (Rochester) is listed third behind Wheaton and Lance Moore.

NOTEWORTHY

-- Although he’s a rookie, DE Stephon Tuitt is expected to make a contribution this season. On Saturday, Tuitt got his first taste of the big time as he practiced with the first team defense. Suffice to say the 46th overall pick was a little excited. Afterwards, he rushed off the field to call his mom with the news. “Right now I’m working hard and it’s showing,” Tuitt said. “That’s the best thing I can do for my teammates, is just going on the field every day and try and get better.”

-- Some have questioned the commitment of WR Martavis Bryant, but few can question his ability or size. The 6-foot-5, receiver displayed the latter two on Saturday in what he described as his best practice as a pro. The fourth-round pick from Clemson says he’s been responding to the tough love shown by coach Mike Tomlin, who has regularly chided Bryant in practice. “I like hard coaching,” Bryant said. “It motivates you, it drives you to keep working.”

-- Joey Porter doesn’t need no stinking golf cart. While other coaches and players are whisked between the locker room and cafeteria in chauffeured carts, Porter makes his own way on a Vespa. The defensive assistant even has his name printed on the front. During his playing days, Porter was forbidden from driving it by former coach Bill Cowher.

-- With the first preseason game less than a week away, the Steelers released their initial depth chart as required by league rule. There were no real surprises though it should be noted that Brad Wing and Adam Podlesh are listed as co-starters. Podlesh, a seven-year veteran, has been absent from training camp due to personal reasons. Coach Mike Tomlin said he had no update on Podlesh’s status.

-- As scheduled, the Steelers did not hold a morning walk-through. Due to morning rain, tarps covered Chuck Noll Field into early afternoon.

UNDER THE ROPES

-- Rookie LB Ryan Shazier took the worst of a hit on RB Le’Veon Bell late in practice. Shazier limped off and later had his right calf/knee wrapped in ice. It doesn’t appear to be serious.

-- On his first carry from scrimmage against the first team defense, RB Dri Archer broke off a 40-plus-yard run to the delight of the spectators.

-- There’s little chance WR Justin Brown spends another year on the practice squad after making catches like the one he did Sunday. Brown leapt high to haul in a QB Landry Jones pass in the left corner.

-- The coaching staff appears very high on the development of DE Stephon Tuitt in his quest to earn an opening day start. For the second straight day, Tuitt practiced with the first team defense as did FS Shamarko Thomas.

-- G/C Chris Elkins (Beaver Falls) took reps at center after practicing at left guard last week.

-- Special teams coordinator Danny Smith, who left practice early a day earlier with an apparent illness, appeared no worse for wear.

-- Receivers and defensive backs participated in an Oklahoma Drill, believed to be the first at a Steelers camp since the Chuck Noll days.

-- TE Rob Blanchflower, now wearing a sleeve on his left leg, and LB Jordan Zumwalt continued to rehab on the sideline.

-- QB Ben Roethlisberger did not practice and neither did NT Loni Fangupo, who appears to have suffered a calf injury.

-- Much of Sunday’s afternoon practice, dedicated to red zone play, was held in a steady downpour. There was no morning walk-through.

BY THE NUMBERS

6: Days until the Steelers’ preseason opener against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands. It’ll be the first NFL game at MetLife Stadium since Super Bowl XLVIII in February

QUOTEWORTHY

“A little boo-boo.” – Mike Tomlin, coach, on apparent knee injury to rookie running back Ryan Shazier.

Wheaton was listed as the No. 2 receiver behind Antonio Brown on the Steelers’ initial depth chart released Sunday.

I think that means Moye is fourth, but damn.

no, Brown is 4th. Moye is battling for 5th.

Well guys I just learned we shouldnt believe any of these updates from camp. We have to wait until Idiot goes to camp or watches any of the preseason games to validate anything that has happened at camp. We will all wait patiently.

as much as you loathe the board and the vast majority of posters here (your words, not mine, Cap-i-tan Sport Chief), here's some advice:
