I spent time in Italy. They mostly have over-the-air TV antennas and no one has a clothes dryer because electricity is too expensive. At best, the standard of living is comparable to America in the early 1970's.

Venezuela has not been a colony in well over 150 years. They were doing pretty well until Hugo Chavez.

You're confusing Italy with Greece. Italians would work more and don't like having an unemployment rate of 12% and youth unemployment of 35% but their economy stinks because it is, well, Socialist, and taxes and regulation are too high. So I'm told from my relatives there.

College and healthcare isn't free. They have extremely high income tax and sales tax rates to pay for it. It's why their economies are slow. I don't think that high unemployment correlates to a high standard of living.
