Vince Williams - Crying like a *****

That whole article has one quote from William's

"I was upset. I felt like I did enough to show them what I was capable of, and obviously, I was going to show some progression because I got the reps throughout the entire season."

Wow, that is bitching? Who wouldn't be disappointed if someone was drafted to take your spot?

Going by what has come out in training camp he's been impressing and playing with a chip on his shoulder which is a good thing for the team.

I've read where Williams doesn't feel comfortable signing autographs because he doesn't feel he's earned the adulation, sounds like a humble guy to me who wants to earn everything he gets. That's exactly the type mentality I'd want from someone on my team.

Vince is a very good lb and special teams guy. I love the fact that he'll be the first off the bench if an ILB goes down.

The Newspaper That Shall Not Be Named reported yesterday that the Steelers have extended or are negotiating with 4 of the 5 players whose contracts expire this year. The one they did not choose to extend was...wait for it...drum roll please...ta-da...Vince Williams.

Why is it when we bring someone new in all I read here is how he needs to earn his spot, and not think he deserves it, he can't be handed the starting job, etc, but when a defense loses an old and slow ILB, and the guy who comes in to replace him somehow manages to play worse than the geriatric with the walker, suddenly we're all "He should want to be the starter, it's ok if he's upset they are trying to replace him". Well, they aren't trying to replace him because he lit it up last year. They aren't trying to replace him because we had the number 1 run defense last year. They aren't trying to replace him because our defense was solid over the middle against the pass. They ARE trying to replace him because he needs replaced.

If you can't stop the short pass over the middle with your base defense in todays NFL, you will get schooled. Now that you can no longer lay guys out who come across the middle, you NEED guys who can run with them, but who can still hold their own against the run, unless you want to spend the entire game in nickel and dime D. I shouldn't need to sit down with and NFL ILB and explain this, one would think since he went to school he'd be able to figure out the reason he's not going to start unless a few people are hurt again.

Agree, he needs to be replaced and people need to wake up. Back up, yes, starter, only under excruciating needs.
Our coaches see them every day, I'm sure they will pick the right order of who and when.

Yep, he played last year... And yep had one of the lower LB ratings of all starters in the league. Content?

I'm sure it was not Williams who they elected not to extend. Its only his second year of his rookie contract. I believe they have elected not to extend CHRIS CARTER.

Vince is a 2 down back. That is his problem. He has had a good camp but so has the rookie, Shazier, who is an every down player and one of the fastest on the field.

Such is life in the ever changing, ever morphing NFL. Remember when we had an ILBer the size of a house at 275 lbs,

well those days are over. Williams is somewhat of a throwback to the old run stuffing guy in the middle but in today's game they have to be able to cover receivers also. Sorry Vince but time stops for no one.

Thing was Levon Kirkland could cover too. He was a freak of nature.

I'm sure that he was indeed faster than he looked but Levon covering a slot receiver would be a stretch I think. I will admit though, the man could play football.

Yeah, he isn't a free agent next year, Ron.

Shazier maybe can but no LBs are covering WRs man to man. Kirkland was able to cover TEs and RBs and would still be a 3down player in todays game.

I know its only one play, but it sticks out in my mind, for what happened after the play. Levon dropped into coverage. QB threw a deep ball down the middle. Kirkland intercepts and returns for near a touch down. He only had the QB to beat
but chose to step out of bounds. Near 80 some yard return. Our offense scored and guess who got to hold for the extra point? Kirkland, that's why it sticks out so much. He covered his guy, deep, and made interception. He was a freak, had
some speed. Big man, awesome LB, great person.

I dont think its fair to blame williams for the d. We were in the base defense less than 50% of the time. The short pass has been a problem for this D for many many years. Maybe williams's physical limitations kept us out of the base, but who knows. Im not saying he is a world beater and didnt need upgraded, but there was lots of blame to go around on the D last year.

bad planning from the F.O. basically, we had no one behind Timmons and Foote

Your not going to have depth at every position. Sometimes you have to hope for the best. If things had went as planned Spence would of been Footes replacement if not starting altogether.

I'm the first to preach that too, but before last season's draft they already knew Spence was a complete question mark after that knee injury.
All they drafted was a 6th rounder and didn't bring any vet (like Arthur Moats for example) to compete

I assumimg the draft didnt fall to where they could address the position. Similar to DB this year. I do agree maybe a vet. I dont remember who may of been available.

Agreed there is a lot of blame to go around, and agreed we were out of our base defense quite a bit, that being said, when you're part of that unit, squaking about how you felt you earned your place is what rubs me wrong. Everyone could see if you short passed on us you were going to kill us, and that's why the speed/size combo was needed.

That's okay Vince, I was a bit upset when they draft Shazier too and I don't even play the position.

No one is saying he shouldn't be replaced or we don't need an upgrade. You're saying he is crying like a *****, he's a competitor who wants to prove he's worthy of starting, more power to him.

What did you really want him to say Joe? Yeah I suck, I really wanted to be replaced? In fact I suck so much they should just outright cut me?

Free agent in 2017.
I stand corrected. Should have said negotiated contracts with players who had one year remaining. Regardless, I think we can say that they don't plan on keeping him around. S'all right Vince, you'll get snapped up by Arizona about 20 seconds after the Steelers let you walk.
