Watt skipping mandatory mini camp per Schefter

The trade market wouldn't be near what people think. Teams aren't giving away multiple first round picks for anyone not named Mahomes, Burrow or Allen.
If we hadn’t signed Rodgers I would’ve listened to offers that included only one first round pick. I love Watt, but he’s on the downward slope of his career now. We could’ve jump started a rebuild with the pick(s) we got for him. That’s all moot now.

I have friends...Bears fans. They laugh at the Steelers.

The surprising part of that statement is that”you have friends”,………………. (LoL)

Realistically, I’d guess a 2nd and a 4th. Re3member the getting team still has to deal with a very large contract offer.

They can afford to keep him and should.

The biggest thing the team can do for themselves is scheme him better.. It can be done but the Defense is going to have to be opened up a little and intermittent blitzing will be needed. Add in minimizing that 2DL set and you could actually see this defense getting back to the glory days of long lost.

Very rarely do edge rushers carry on a great deal of success well into their 30s. TJ has had a great career, but overpaying him and extending him in a long-term deal at this stage will be a big mistake. One the Steelers will of course undoubtedly make.

What most of the people saying "should have paid him a long time ago" are meaning, and even JJ said this on the Macafee show, is they should have signed him to his extension first thing in the off season.

There were several players at his position that were also up for extensions. Instead of negotiating earlier, and setting the market, they are caught with their dick in their hands and have to match the market now.

Setting the market would have netted a contract in the $35m/per year range. By waiting, you're looking at $40+. That's a huge difference, and signing Rodgers or not had no bearing on Watts contract. This wasn't a normal Steelers off season of playing restructure to create space, we still have $18m in space after the Rodgers contract...

JJ Watt said it out loud, the home town discount goes away when you wait this long.

The reason why it is so easy to double or triple Watt is because they only play 2 DL so much. It’s simply a numbers thing when you rush 4 against 5-6 blockers on the OL and 1-2 that chip. That’s what “Living in your fears” and “Playing to not lose” gets you

I hope Tomlin and/or Rooney read this post. 🙏

Not often the Steelers extend someone at the beginning of the new season.....for a record amount of $$$$$$.

That said. Even if we give Watt $50 mill per for 4 more years. That will be a bargain in itself in a couple years. 🤪

They are probs not over the Claypool deal.
Nor the fact their 6th round pick for Fields didn’t turn into a 4th rounder.

But the originator of the Wuhan Lab’s KSDS probably caused that. A byproduct of TDS (Tomlin Derangement Syndrome). Do we know where Fauci was at the time? 😀😵‍💫

We’re going to have to agree to disagree here Tom.
You’re correct, they ain’t winning with or without him so that’s my argument to trade him for draft picks. Now you are also correct in saying Tomlin would screw up the draft picks.
Man is this organization totally ****** up.
Yep, they think they can win now so hence Rodgers. That’s a total joke in itself. I agree with Terry Bradshaw when he said Rodgers needed to stay in California eat bark and talk to the gods.
Get your popcorn, should be entertaining.
Yep and that's what sucks, we used to think every year could be our year, now we are just waiting to get ***** slapped in the playoffs every season. We have to watch Tomlin get totally embarrassed vs good teams. Tomlin is the first coach and we are the first team to give up at least 28 points in 6 straight playoff games, and he's supposed to be a defensive guy and we've had one of, if not the highest paid defense.

Don’t say that to the Tomlin worshippers. They’ll swarm like red ants on a spilt’ snow ⛄️ cone.

Capt cool shades and Terrell Austin are COMPLETLEY incapable of "scheming". The whole "we are who we are" bullshit mentality is ingrained into this team, coaching staff, and organization all the way to the freaking secretaries. TJ will be signed for FAR too much and the organization will continue to struggle, especially defensively, for the next four years because of it.

Yep. This is all common knowledge but the Tomlick/Con/Looney homers out themselves when they act like they had no clue of this. lol. #clownact

The timing factor that is probably grating on Watt and his advisors too. They have had all season to address TJ and his contract and it's not done yet. Cleveland, in far worse cap hell with a similar QB issue, got their helmet assault specialist looked after quickly.

Maybe the FO have diligently tried, but if they had a "handshake" deal with Ayahuasca A A Ron for weeks/months, then they ought to have gotten TJ's deal completed by now. TJ may feel somewhat disrespected given what seems like other Steeler priorities.

They are not trading him, or they would have done so pre-draft. They cannot be so bad to mess up a deal for TJ and for Pickens in one offseason.

I hope they work things out quickly now, and wouldn't be surprised by a 4 year extension at $42M per with the first two years gteed and maybe upto $50M upfront.

I hear yaz Badcat, I as well as many others have contended the coaching is by far the biggest weakness. The scheme is authored by the HC so thus he is responsible for it. Our HC has failed miserably and yet continues to guide the team with no sign of temperature. Many others have contended coaches would be waving bye bye, yet the whisperer is working his magic on the owner.

How often do the steelers trade for a player and immediately pay him top money? The past two off seasons have been very UN-Steeler like, they could have easily extended Watt first thing. He's loved throughout the city by fans, teammates, and coaches. He's been the face of the franchise since Ben retired...

I agree that with the insane cap increases, and the fact we're not looking at a franchise QB contract in the next 4 years will make his deal look better later on...but, you avoid a lot of unnecessary drama getting it done sooner.

Bingo, the majority of us here could scheme to stop Watt, because we know exactly where he's lining up and we know there will be no one blitzing, so it's simple, TE chip, RT blocks, and RB or OG if he's free supports the RT. Yet fans ***** that he can't beat 3 NFL caliber players and get to the QB in less than 3 seconds.

Instead of the 4yr extension, maybe try for a 3yr.

Very frustrating to say the least with the highest paid defense the last few years, a supposed defensive genius HC, and we get torched in the playoffs over and over.
Starts at the top Tom with the owner who continues to buy into all this Tomlin hype.
Hopefully the son will be better!

Agreed. Maybe someone should have told Rooney and Omar. 🤪
