What have Kahn (and Colbert last few years) got us?

The problem the gm is facing is finding starters there where we’re drafting at… there’s a few defensive linemen that could drop to us that could start… maybe a couple dbs big maybe, but that’s it on defense… offense they already said they won’t start a rookie qb so name a rb, wr, at the 21st spot maybe an o lineman that could start. And then we have no 2nd rounder…. So getting any starters out of this draft is probably not going to happen. That’s the problem of putting all your eggs in the draft basket as to fixing team is a misnomer to begin with. You have to be able to Manage free agency to win championships. Look at the chargers picking up Harris I thought 9ers or Dallas might get him… cuz all those teams drafted a big rookie tackle last year… but Harris right in behind those qbs and 1st rd draft pick tackles is a winning ticket. We fuked that up horribly we cut Pickett bumbled the drafting of the o lineman that are looking lik they are going to end up next to Kenny. Then cut Harris getting nothing for him. I’ll tell you right now: give me Pickett qb, Harris rb, muth Te, Pickens wr, Moore LT, Kevin Dotson LG, Frazier C, Jones RG, Frautanu RT, and add metcalf at receive and name Mike Munchak the offensive coordinator we’d be challenging in the playoffs! It’s about the coaching!! And nothing else! The Rooney’s better get there head out of their *****!! These bad offensive coordinators are killing the Steelers!!

What is Khan thinking? Well he's thinking that they have players in roles that they are comfortable enough in that they don't need to REACH for a player based on a need. So in that sense, they don't NEED any ONE player. REACHING is how you end up with Pickett in the first round. And Khan so far, has done a very good job of not reaching for need.

As for your "evaluations"

1. QB - All signs point to Rodgers, and they will most likely draft A QB, but not necessarily any specific one in any specific round. They've talked to Dart, Milroe, Shough, Ewers, and Howard. Any number of those guys could go anywhere from the first to the fifth round. So no need to reach, they know who they like it what round they like them in.

2. OT- Well, they've spent the last two drafts on OT in the first round. They signed a couple, and have Ryan Anderson as the swing back up. All the spots are technically filled, again, no need to reach. As for your assessment on Jones, it's wrong. The player that couldn't hold of Moore? Not what happened at all. In fact, it was stated by more than one coach that Moore CAN'T PLAY RT!! Jones could. If Jones couldn't hold off Moore, as you put it, they wouldn't have let Moore go in FA and stated that Jones is the LT going forward.

3. RB - Again, no spot in the roster for one, they've looked at everyone from Jeanty to Blue, first rounders to seventh rounders. With all the spots filled (Paterson is still rostered), again no need to reach.

4. Our #2 is DK. You don't like our WR1, but he's still our WR1 and the coaches like him, Khan likes him, and his teammates like him. After that we have Austin, Wilson, and they brought back Skowronek and Miller. That's 6 WR on the roster. Guess what? No need to reach.

5. DL - This is where we as fans want the pick to be. But the numbers again support the fact that they don't need to reach for a player and have bodies to fill the holes. Logan Lee missed last year, he's back. You still have Heyward, Loudermilk, Adams, Lowry and Benton as well. And they signed Ekuale and Otomewo. That's 8... what's the theme? No need to reach.

6. CB - what's the plan? Porter and Slay start, Echols at nickel, Trice the main back up and dime. They resigned Pierre as depth, and don't forget Bishop. That's 6.

7. S - not sure what you're trying to get at here. They lost Kazee and replaced him with Thornhill. They have Minkah, Elliot, and Killebrew. How many do you want?


Do you see the theme here? No reaching. They filled the holes, they can go BPA. That's what Khan is saying. Not that we can't UPGRADE positions, that is the whole reason to even have a draft to begin with. But that they aren't going into the draft with a massive NEED. It's really a simple concept.

Who fixes the scheme though....on both sides of the ball? And when does that happen?

I agree. I clearly read it as taking the best player at a position of need, but then most of us here can read.

I know we've had this conversation before, but this is one of the things I think Colbert did well for most of his time with us (although his last few drafts were not good).

But he usually set the team up so it wasn't forced to draft for pure need. We went into most drafts without hair on fire needs by signing UFAs near the bottom of the barrel pre-draft. Guys who could play / be spot starters. But not guys we'd feel bad about being lower on the depth chart if we drafted a high pedigree guy at their position.

I worry that Kahn is making a big departure from this strategy.

Last year we went into the draft with tremendous needs at WR and slot CB. We went with more BPA types at OT and OC. Both look like reasonable picks.

But because of poor roster management predraft, we then had to rely on Pickens and a bunch of WR4s...so we were super-vulnerable to Pickens getting hurt. And we scrambled to sign a UDFA in Bishop and then Sutton in June knowing he wouldn't be able to play for half the year.

I worry that this is the path we're going to take with DL. Especially with no 2nd round pick. We might get a good player that falls to us in the 1st that isn't DL. Then we either take the non-DL that looks really good and wait for the 3rd to fill the glaring need. Or maybe we take a DL who isn't the best player on our board.

Edit: FWIW, it's easy to say that Lamar was BPA in hindsight. But he was a huge project in real-time. People tend to forget that TJ was also a project in round 1. A lot of people thought it was just Tomlin drafting based on last names.
 
You at least need to use the full quote if you want to try to get after Khan.

"Our goal is always to put ourselves in a position where we don't have to take a guy at a specific position," Khan said. "And I feel like we've added some key pieces to what we're trying to accomplish. And this draft is, there's some really good players in this draft that can help us at various positions. And we've been working hard at trying to make sure we set our board right, and there's more work to come. I'm praying Kahn is able to hold off Tomlin from probably wanting to pick Milroe in the first even if they trade back to the bottom of the round. Milroe Is the typical type of guy Tomlin can't draft fast enough. Milroe Is a freak athlete that's fast but needs a ton of development. We know historically how these picks turn out since the coaching staff struggles developing young talent. The only thing that would make him more attractive to Tomlin is if he were 5'9.

I'd be fine drafting him in the third as a gadget player (WR,RB,QB), if he's good with that but not as a QB only in round one. Even if Rodgers played with the Steelers for two years, I doubt the staff has him ready to be QB 1 by then. The team needs a plug and play starter this year in a position of need if they think they are Rodgers away from competing for a SB.
 
So every year the Steelers send smoke signals up and the experts think they know but they really don’t know what direction they’re going.
They like a multitude of players from. Dart, Milroe, Howard of the QBs, to Grant and Nolan the DL, to a bevy of the RBs and WRs. The one thing they don’t do is lock in on one guy publicly even though in their minds privately they know.
My assumption and mind you it’s just an assumption, it will be Grant if he’s there or if not Walter Nolan. They need a blue chip DL first and foremost.

Where Harmon goes in the draft has been all over the place. I've seem him mocked in the second, I've seen him mocked top 15. He's a lot like Grant, in that they both have massive upsides, but also weaknesses that makes them hard to pinpoint a draft position. Harmon is the better pass rusher, but he can lose leverage in the rush game. Grant is the better run stopper, but he's still developing as a pass rusher. For that reason alone, is why I usually take Grant over Harmon if both are available. We need help stopping the run, and can wait for the pass rush to develop. Plus, I personally feel that Grants upside is much higher based on his freakish size and athletic ability. Like a Suh/Ngata hybrid of dominance.
 
Please stop using the name "Clown-lin." It's small and juvenile, and it makes you sound kind of like a moron.

I don't normally say stuff like this on these forums. You can express your displeasure for the job the man is doing without lowering yourself to petty stuff like that.

If they truly think they are a Rodgers away from competing for a SB, then it’s not a very football-smart organization, now, is it? I’m sure they’ll say that publicly while the overarching goal will be to get Tomlin closer to Noll’s all time win record and keep the non-losing season streak alive.

An example of this is Alex K's latest mock on the Depot (won't link here).

He's been talking about how we seem to be interested in S based on the visits we've had.

  1. Emmanwori (S)
  2. traded for DK
  3. Williams (WR)
  4. Farmer (DL)
There's more for the rest of the rounds.

This isn't a crazy idea IMO. It could be that having a super-athlete at S would be a great call (certainly worked with Troy). And the WR cupboard isn't well stocked. Especially if we don't plan on extending Pickens after this year.

But I'll be worried if we don't draft a DL until the 4th. Even though this is a deep DL draft by all accounts. I would again be worried that we'll need to play the least %age of 2-high S again because we'll likely need help stopping the run again.

I could live with it if we go for the best DL in the 3rd as WR can wait, we have the 5 spots covered and depth can be found later to develop. A RB in the 4th should be a good idea too
