What Other Numbers Would You Retire?

As much as I love Green I'm not sure this was a great idea. There are so many great players on those 70s teams that just giving it to one guy seems out of place. I wish they would have left it alone and just not use the numbers.

As do I. Started a bad precedent. I think we will eventually have about 15 numbers retired and they will have to answer questions why 20 or 25 of them aren't retired. With a Franchise with this history you have to be careful retiring any number.

Yup. I wish they would have something like a Steel wall of fame somewhere in Heinz field instead of retiring numbers. Anything to keep from retiring half the numbers on the team because of this.

What a problem to have. Having to worry about not having enough numbers left when u consider retiring jersey numbers? Only in Pittsburgh.

They should just do what Stan Savran has been suggesting for quite awhile now, and that's put a ring of honor inside the stadium. They have too many great players to retire all of their numbers.

58 lambert
59 ham
43 polamalu
36 bettis
7 roethlisberger
maybe 12

None. Now shut the hell up and get back to work

They basically have this with the locker display in the Great Hall. I suppose something visible to everyone wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'd say the Steelers front office has it right....

Mean Joe would be the only other Steeler jersey I'd retire right now. No disrespect to guys like Lambert, Ham, Blount, Harris, Bradshaw or anyone else but Mean Joe was the cornerstone of that 70's team.

If any of the others deserve it I'd say Jack Ham. The guy is without question one of the greatest LB'ers of all-time right there with Butkus. IMHO often overlooked because they guy was not an outspoken loudmouth jerk ala Ray The Knife or LT. Then possibly Blount or Lambert after that.....

I think the Steelers should also do a "RING OF HONOR" type thing that would be one notch down from having your jersey retired. Which IMO is the Ultimate Tribute in any sport.

86 Hines Ward - instead of retiring a ton of numbers, they should make it a tradition to retire 1 number per Super Bowl era team.

Joe Green reps the 70s steelers and Hines can rep the newest SB winners.

There are much better players than Hines that are more worthy of the honor. Alltime greats who were among the best ever at their positions, Bradshaw, Harris, Lambert , Ham and Dawson just to name a few.

They should retire numbers like 10, where everyone that has worn it was a bust.

Santonio wasnt a bust. His time in a Steeler uniform may not have concluded the way we would have liked, but he certainly wasnt a "bust"

Holmes wasn't a total bust. He was a scumbag. Still is. You'd be hard pressed to find, at a Steelers game, anyone wearing a 10 Jersey, of any ilk.

My favorite number is 69, and I hope no one retires that. Oh wait, we're talking football. Nevermind.

He wasn't a total bust but mangold who most wanted would have been a much better pick. He also was t nearly as good as many claim

Stonio had attitude problems but he was more a salary cap casualty than anything else.

One more time: not a bust. And as far as I see it he's wasnt as bad for us on the field as many people claim he was.

It's a one off, fifty years after the first and probably another fifty years or more before they do it again.

Joe was unquestionably the most influential player the Steelers ever had, the dynasty started when Knoll took him. I don't think it has opened any door for any other numbers to be retired.

It's simply a way for the Rooney's to recognize what Greene means to the organization, he deserves it.

Hopefully no more. 12 definitley won't. Bradshaw has gone off the wall. I think after not showing up to Chuck Nolls funeral, there is no way he would even be in discussion.

I may be by myself her but I would consider #24. Blier had to overcome a hell of a lot to play at the level he did. I also agree with Webby the man was possibly the greatest center to ever play the game. mel Blount and Hines Ward made them change the way the game was played. Those would be my picks and in that order.

Bleier was #20.

All I'll say about Holmes was this kid was in the "THE ZONE" on the final drive of Super Bowl XLIII. After he caught that pass I went nuts then I saw him do mimic LeBron James powder celebration and I thought...."OH ****....Penalty for excessive celebration...but the refs had luckily turned their backs to his crazy antics.

No hate on Holmes here....

None.

Leave it alone.

Green is an exception because of his career as a coach/scout (much of which was with the Steelers). He's kind of a "lifer" in the organization. No one else from that 1970's dynasty really is like that.

This sentiment gets my vote !
