What's Up With Joey Jr?

This is easy.., it’s Guaranteed money. Since porter was the 32nd pick in the draft, he wants the guaranteed money usually reserved for first round picks and their slightly different contract structures… the league rules say that since miami’s pick was passed due to a penalty from the league, he is the 33 rd pick in the draft..

Frankly he is right and the process simply saves all the owners money. There should be a union action about it if, well you know, that union was actually worth anything at all..

The problem is that the league frowns on teams setting poor precedent in these matters.. so it probably isn’t as simple as tossing him an extra couple hundred thousand dollars

should just split the difference. What did they do in past when teams got docked a 1st round pick

The team won't have a 5th year on his rookie deal, why should the team pay him as a 1st without the benefit they should have

it will work out. But to Jitters point, does anyone remember what happened the last time this happened?

This about sums it up. No matter the argument for JPJ's agent, the Steelers don't have the fifth-year option every other first rounder has. He's a second-round pick straight up.

probably seem reason will levis and 2-3 others 31-36 havent signed

Football writer mike florio rates Tomlin as the #2 head coach in the league. Kissing some @ss huh mike?
In the "new NFL" winning playoff or championship games isn't viewed as success as you are oppressing other teams that just want to play & have fun!

And those rascally Steelers sure do have FUN!

Porter Jr's Dad probably has some influence on this as well. Nothing nefarious, but he knows how the NFL works, and probably, like most ex players do, feels as if he was used to some degree.

So I know this situation has happened in the past… and I know the arguments about it, but I don’t know how it was resolved back in 2016 or the other times it occurred.

The issue people have is that the league penalizes teams for transgressions and docks them picks, but the players pay the price because every single player after the forfeited pick loses some money…. So if a team loses tge 10th overall pick, the tenth guy drafted doesn’t get the money for being the tenth guy… because the tenth spot was vacant … it’s illogical

Who would you put it front of Tomlin? Since I asked this, please understand where I am coming from. First, we are hyper focused on the Steelers, so we see every flaw. We only look at other coaches generally. We don't necessarily see their flaws or at least as glaringly as we do Tomlin. Outsider of Any Reid right now, at this moment, I bet every fan base has issues with their coach. I'm sure even in NE they do with the great cheater.

Secondly, I think all coaches get way more credit than they deserve. Coaches win because of the talent they have, you aren't winning anything without talent. It's the players. Chuck Noll said that all the time. Then it becomes hoping the talent, if you have it, is mature enough to focus for a year to win it all. I really think it is more about that than x's and o's and all that at the end of the day.

I don't put any stock in where they rank coaches. Seems to be a colossal waste of time. I am indifferent if they rank Tomlin 2nd or 32nd. I don't think Tomlin is appreciably better than let's say Kevin Stefanski or something, nor is he worse. They are just coaches, man. The players play.

And this year has the additional wrench thrown in with the team not having a 5th year option if it's assumed that JPJ should be thought of as a 1st round pick.

The league needs to come out and clarify all of this, provided that this is what's holding things up.

I don't think there is any clearing up to be had. JPJ was selected in Slot 2.1 not 1.32. If Joey and his agent dont agree then so what. 2.1 is what is on the official NFL records so go pound sand if you dont agree.

**** sandwich with the 1.32 v 2.1 slotting. He's technically both spots. The league didn't help by just skipping a number for Miami. Ultimately he will sign and this is about a precedent.

Here's the thing about the HUGE difference between being a first round pick and second round pick is the 5th year option. That gives a team additional flexibility in resigning a player after their first contract is up. Right now a CB getting his 5th year option activated would get 11-15 million depending on his performance. Likely, closer to 11 than 15. Top paid CB's make 20m+ a season. So that's a 9-10 million dollar difference. JP2 would have to be resigned or franchised after his 4th season. So I don't think he deserves both the extra guaranteed money and not having to worry about the 5th year option.

The 5th year option does have some advantages for the player as it full guarantees year 4 and 5 when the team uses it. Shazier benefited from this after his injury.

This.

He was picked 2.01 on Friday.
He may have preferred 1.32, but that didn't happen.

The rest, unfortunately, is emotional negotiation, which is not usually productive.

This is on him, his agent and supporters, including Dad.

Another reason why the Steelers should’ve traded the pick.

This is a “nothing burger”. It’s a play to get more money up front and still cash in later…………. Sort-of like a loop-hole. I’d bet Peezy Sr. Is pushing the agenda the most.
