What's Up With Joey Jr?

A later second, so you downgrade your early second-round pick and a third-rounder is a middle round selection. There will be other good cornerbacks from this draft, but Porter had a few things the Steelers liked: size, wingspan, bloodlines.
Yes, trading down. Whether it’s a downgrade can only be determined years later - maybe Porter is still available later, maybe they draft another player who turns out to be a better player. The draft is a big guess and there’s not much to suggest that picking at #32 greatly improves a teams chances vs picking at #45, and #75 or whatever.

I hope Porter turns out to be a great player, but I’ve never been all that impressed by him dating back to the times I saw him play in high school. He didn’t dominate games like I would have expected a future #32 pick to do. At least not in the games I watched.

After a year or probably more of dedicating so much resources scouting those prospects if you are in a position to draft a player at the top of your board and you believe he is clearly above the rest then you got to pull the trigger, not trade down and dilute talent, again, according to your board.

So I truly think that if they got Porter right there is because they believe in the talent that the scouting department gave to the kid and trading down would be missing out on a great prospect on hopes that others with lower value over achieve.

Yeah, he had been projected to go a lot higher in many mocks so maybe he’s a steal or maybe there was good reason he was still available, time will tell.

It's rare to have a high second-round pick. Adding later picks could've helped build depth, but if you also look at a lot of scouting reports, Porter was a mid-round talent. I thought Porter, Branch, and Mayer were the top three guys available. Porter was the best athlete, Branch will just be a good player despite the lack of athleticism, and getting Washington later was probably a better fit for the Steelers, though Mayer will likely turn out to be the better player.

I really just think it was a case where the Steelers had Porter ranked significantly higher than the next guy on the board and they didn't feel they could get someone of his caliber later on in the second.
