I know, I know

it is a long shot that he gets activated for this weekend,

but if he can and if he shows some resemblance to the kid they coveted in the draft when he came out, then maybe they can get him to sign a more cap friendly deal to stick around next season and provide some depth at the CB spot.

IF his back is ok AND he is willing to play for 7 or 8 million instead of 12… then great..

Just in time for us to cut him. No way we pay him his contract. If he comes back for $5-7 million with an easy out if he can't play or even make the team, then maybe. Otherwise, just cut him.

It would have to be a prove it type contract, but yes just as you stated.!

Salute the nation

2 base with playing incentives to 7. Maybe. At this point he owes the team 2.75 for being.this gullible.

Just more wasted cap space and loss of late round pick for recycled and tattered goods

How to waste assets by the Steelers

That rolled over cap into next year might have actually helped a bit unlike a guy that lives in the tub

What’s the chance that he shuts down a side of the field in a WC game or gets us a pick? cuz anything short of that and it was a stupid deal

Look, right now this guy is the 13th highest paid CB in the league… a 7-8 million dollar contract that is partially incentivized would be fair with his injury history… after the UFA period that would put him squarely in #2CB territory

They actually didn’t lose any pick because the pick they traded was conditional on him starting a number of games this year which he didn’t… they did flush about 3 million down the drain with him though

Damn, this is almost a coach level post

The title of the article states the Steelers no longer owe the draft pick to Washington

yes they spent a bit of cap space on him, but not a hell of a lot

IMO this deal was always more about next season with the expectation that they would be able to redo his contract to a more cap friendly amount

expecting a guy you got for basically nothing to come in and shut down one side of the field is a bit of a reach

Maybe he can get a pick

I hope he shows enough in practice and in any game time he may get and he is willing to rework his contract and stick around next season. If he can develop into a solid contributor this was money well spent

Read my post again. I started out with “IF his back is OK… if its still a problem, just cut bait
If a player has essentially missed an entire season with a back injury they are largely ******. Backs are not like knees or shoulders or ankles. They are always a problem waiting to happen. Any and I mean any contract with WJ3 in that money range would have to have min guarantees and max playing incentives. Hell they already toileted 2.75 million. how good do you think this guy is. He is on his third team.

He was good enough in cincy to draw a big contract in free agency.

Washington just did not use him correctly.

No one is expecting Ike Taylor level success from him going forward

Ha ha. I just looked up Statistics. You take away the fact that Sutton had to play his way onto the field and you have pretty much the same player. You save that 2.75 million and any thought of what you might pay WJ3 and pay Cam Sutton. He isn't a gimp neither.

But the Bengals also let him walk after four years and to my memory they weren't paying big money QB at that point. To me any First Rounder that gets to walk after rookie deal is a real red flag. ie. Devin Bush and Uncle Jarvis.
Q. Would the Bengals not have had a fifth year option on this player? He was a first rounder and I know the Steelers exercised 5th on Bud Dupree who was drafted 2 years before Jackson. Coolie any reason the Bengals did not exercise their right of refusal?

Wrong side of 30 with back issues. I would rather just keep Witherspoon at 4 million and to be honest I would cut Witherspoon like a prime rib on Sunday if it meant keeping Sutton. I think Sutton, Wallace, Pierre, and Maulet and maybe a later draft pick like Steven Gilmore would be a good enough secondary to get it done with the pass rush we hopefully have if Watt and Highsmigh stay healthy next year.

If his back is healed and he shows the skills that got him the FA contract from the Skins, ok I’m in.
I know we liked him a lot pre draft and shades wanted to draft him until Cincy swooped in and took him, so like I said, if he’s healthy and shows those skills, I’d sign him.
I do think you don’t have to get crazy with a new deal either.
And he’s one of Coolie’s boys!

Like Coolie if you take off the Cougar colored glasses for a second here you would see that the warning bells on this guy are deafening. No fifth year option. bitched on the way out of Bengals. Commanders take a salary cap blood bath to drop him. ****** back. I'm not signing this guy unless the deal is so salary cap friendly it is ridiculous.

Porter, Sutton, Wallace, Pierre and Maulet

Porter means he's our first round pick though. Guess it all depends on how the chips fall but I am personally hoping a LT or ILB is there for us in the first. If not I am fine with taking a CB.

Some people don't want to see Edmunds get that much but you think 7 or 8 for a guy with a ****** back?
We aren't paying Edmunds that money. We didn't want to pay him $6M for his 5th year option and he came back for $3M. He's set his value here, he'll sit in FA again for all of free agency and come back again around $3M .

And it was the trading of late round picks 3 years from now. It was an amazing trade value at the time, and even better now that we don't owe any pick!
