WJIII Finally Returns to practice

Porter means he's our first round pick though. Guess it all depends on how the chips fall but I am personally hoping a LT or ILB is there for us in the first. If not I am fine with taking a CB.
if Porter is there at 15, Omar will do his best Colbert impersonation and sprint to the podium.

I'd like LT, as well.

Like Coolie if you take off the Cougar colored glasses for a second here you would see that the warning bells on this guy are deafening. No fifth year option. bitched on the way out of Bengals. Commanders take a salary cap blood bath to drop him. ****** back. I'm not signing this guy unless the deal is so salary cap friendly it is ridiculous.
my point all along has been the Steelers don't know what they have yet. they have placed a bet on the table and are rolling the dice. If they are lucky they might get a guy who can be a solid contributor next year for basically nothing (depending on the contract they can negotiate) If his back continues to be an issue they cut him loose.

If healthy he is easily better than witherspoon, but I wouldn't keep him if it meant not being able to sign Sutton also. I don't see this as either WJIII or Sutton, I see it as see what you can resign him for (if healthy) while doing all you can to bring Sutton back

We aren't paying Edmunds that money. We didn't want to pay him $6M for his 5th year option and he came back for $3M. He's set his value here, he'll sit in FA again for all of free agency and come back again around $3M .
Not sure why you so heavily overvalue DJ and completely under value Edmunds even putting him below Bush a week ago which is laughable. I doubt he gets 7, but I think he is playing for 5-6 somewhere next year. He has been very solid and more at times.

I don't know if we get Edmunds for 2.5million again. I think 8 is too high, 2.5 is too low. I would take him back for a 5 million a season deal for 2-3 years. He's only 25 (almost 26) and has been ascending with this imo being his best season. I think he outplayed his contract this year.

Ok but you got people talking 7 million dollars here. That's crazy. Now part of this is busting your balls Coolie. But you gotta admit if Jackson is from Notre Dame there is no way you are taking this position. They **** away 2.75 this year. My preference with this player would be an extremely incentive laden contract based on snaps played in 2023 with an option for 2024. I feel like his options will be pretty limited and that is reasonable. I don't hate the player, but I would not paying much either.

well since ND is consistently over hyped, probably not....but if he was from a Power 5 school and went in the 1st round and the Steelers had the same deal, I would probably feel about the same. No I would not give him $7 million next year and I have never said I would

as I have said all along, WJIII will have to come back under a reasonable contract that works for the Steelers otherwise the roll of the dice on this was a miss

Define what you would see as reasonable as a talking point please. And I don't see the Steelers getting him for nothing. They paid him the same as the starting tailback, starting QB and a FA SS who has started virtually every game for 5 seasons. He modelled sideline gear for 8 or 10 weeks. Oh and Notre Dame consistently produces high quality talent at almost every position but QB in the last how long. The Steelers need line help. Wish they had a hell of a lot more ND lineman, I will tell you that for free.

$1 Billion Dollars

the deal would have to be for not much more than they have paid him this year....no more than 3.5 million with incentives on playing time and production
and that is only if all signs show he is healthy. I would love to see him on the field before any such decision has to be made to get some idea of where he now talent wise.

I would say that is fair particularly as a hedge if they just cannot retain Sutton. I would go with playing time incentives only. Production incentives are not a good idea in my opinion. I do not want the player thinking about that at all.
Edit: Whole thing would come down to what would it cost to cut him at camp and how much if his back is ****** midway through the season.

I'm not undervaluing Edmunds, the league did. He sat in FA for its entirety, and singed back with us for nothing just before training camp. Safeties don't make crap in FA unless you are an elite safety. Heck even Honey Badger sat for most of FA, a well as KZ, and both are playmakers. The entire league doesn't value safeties, and won't pay for them.

And thanks for the correction. I'll put Edmunds over Bush, and put Spillaine above him...

(Robinson might make it over him with another great start this week).

Edmunds erased a lot of shaky run defense this year. I would say he had a very limited market because frankly he was underwhelming last year, but he has been steady and on the field for 5 years. Robinson could be a find for next year, you cannot compare this year and I've championed him all year over why should I take a gap. Spillane is another guy I like but his play is schitzo too. he looks god awful sometimes and other times every bit of a starter. Sometimes he is firing to gaps, other times he goes to the junk and leaves his flow gap for the cut back. Sometimes he is decent in coverage, sometimes he gets totally caught in trail vs. the back in coverage.

I think your Spillane comments are spot on.

I agree you have to be young and a stud to get that cha-ching contract. But the argument could be said for any position in the NFL for that. Edmunds is the 41st highest paid safety. Considering there's 32 starting SS in the NFL I would say his play this year would put him middle of the pack. So just to make the math simple 32 FS + 32 SS equals 64 starting safeties in the NFL. So I would say he should be paid in that low 30's range. That puts Edmunds in the Eric Rowe pay range. Rowe's contract is 3-years 14.75 million. I could live with that.

Great write up and comparable. Not everyone is going to be a superstar. Edmunds play has been at the line most of his career and I think above this year. About 5 per for a solid guy who you don't have to go out and find a FA or draft pick to replace.... plus he has played next to your super stud for three years who makes 4 times that.

And I'll give Edmunds some credit. I think his last 2 games have been some of the best he's ever played. Just took him 5 years to develop. I'm very hard on him because he disappears for weeks at a time, takes bad angles on tackles, bad angles on coverage, and until these past 2 weeks, always let the WR catch the ball in front of him before gently laying him on the ground. All that talent and pedigree, I expect a high intensity banger, not just a guy.

If it were my choice, I'd re-sign KZ and let Edmunds test the market. Though I might sign his brother for ILB depth...

Edmunds has been underwhelming based on where he was drafted. Had he been drafted in the 3rd as most people though he would be, His paly would be considered good for a 3rd rounder.
he is playing his best ball oof his career since the bye. Hopefully he signs with us again to a fair price for both sides

I'd be fine with Kazee too, but he is listed as FS on depth chart. Is he SS capable? I didn't think Edmunds played particularly well against Andrews but no one did. Bush was made a mockery. I thought Edmunds played his best ball in the first half and was one of the only guys who jumped out in that stretch of the season. I disagree with a lot of your points about tackle and coverage angle and find his willingness to bring the wood laughable. He ******* smashes guys regularly. The big difference between Edmunds and a guy making say 10 is he is not a ball hawk playmaker.

What if we sign Terrell for a 3-year 15m deal and get the Edmunds family discount and get Tremaine for 3-year 39m.

B and G bleeder what stood out more than the number of snaps Edmunds plays is that Marcus Allen plays zero and still retained his job after the bonehead of the year.

The return of Kazee from IR, his snaps,,, up , maulet down. TJ's up etc....

Also how jaylen warrens snaps are up from 30% to 40%,, and we are winning more. And Harris is running harder.

This whole Marcus Allen thing has been an enigma from the beginning. I think Tomlin Banged his mom on a scouting visit, and feels guilty.

Agreed. And he knows our system inside and out. He has been an asset to the team. Fact is he has been a solid contributer for us for a few years now.

Damn, this is almost a coach level post

The title of the article states the Steelers no longer owe the draft pick to Washington

yes they spent a bit of cap space on him, but not a hell of a lot

IMO this deal was always more about next season with the expectation that they would be able to redo his contract to a more cap friendly amount

expecting a guy you got for basically nothing to come in and shut down one side of the field is a bit of a reach

Maybe he can get a pick

I hope he shows enough in practice and in any game time he may get and he is willing to rework his contract and stick around next season. If he can develop into a solid contributor this was money well spent
Well he is an almost Coach level player and it certainly was a Coach level trade

Just a waste of space
