Work stoppage likely

Personally, I don't care if they strike or go away for good or whatever. Sundays in front of the TV watching the Steelers used to be a ritual in my house. These days, if I have something else to do, I do it. If not, I watch the game. NBD either way.

I gave up football the year we had Michael Vick and I survived. A work stoppage might be good for everyone.

Personally, I think the % of revenue split is okay (I think it's 55% players, 45% owners). I would probably like to see like 5% go into a retirement/pension fund that can't be accessed until you are like 50 or something. That 5% coming mostly from the owners (so it would be 55%, 5%, 40%). Remember, operating expenses and stadium funds and all the legal/commissioner stuff has to come out of the owner's share. But based on how Green Bay is operating, it's still a 10-12% profit margin on $250 million in revenue.

There are things I think a good agreement could fix. An extra bye week would be good. That adds a whole week of TV revenue to the regular season schedule. Reduce the preseason by one game (at least). I don't like the way discipline is managed. I still love the contracts/signing bonus/salary cap model. I think it's the best in sports to maintain desire/competitiveness/quality of play.

Problem is for all the good they could do for the game, the negotiations will devolve into 1-2% of revenues and who's dick is longest. Then both sides will isolate the fans and we'll hate both sides equally. Happens every time.

More than 3 years to prepare and talk. There is so much money to go around. The more I watch Ballers the more I think it is more fact than fiction.

The game belongs to the billionaire owners. That's how it is, always was and always will be. Without them there is no game and these guys play in Canada for a fraction of what they make now or work like the rest of us.
Of course the owners revenue is going to be much more than the players.
How is it any different than say an employee at IBM who works for 100k yearly vs the CEO who with stock options is making millions.

That's the structure of pro sports. The owner revenue vs player compensation is always going to be huge.

Let the cry baby, never happy players join the real world then get back to me.Thats why when a large percentage of them retire and reality sinks in, they're screwed. They've blown their money, have no skills, didn't take advantage of the education offered them in college and now they're screwed.

I'm sorry! I don't feel any of their pain. Again, you know the rules so if you don't like it, don't play.

I really hate the arguement that the players should just be happy. No one is paying to see the owners. If the sport is generating revenue like it is the players deserve their share.

I'm not saying they dont. What we can argue "until" the cows come home is what their "fair share" is.

No one said anything about the players making more then the owners. No one said anything about whether they finish college. The point is they both need each other and thats period. The rest of us... are you putting in the work to become one of the best to make it to that level. Thats what their job requires. To be talented enough and a work ehthic good enough to get there. We dont possess that so dont compare it. Their job generates billions in an industry where people pay to see them. Real world
..a job is a job. I dont see any players in any sport asking to paid more then the owner. But they do have the right to seek whatever they think their value is just like any other person.

But they do have the right to seek whatever they think their value is just like any other person.

And the owners have the right to tell them to pound sand. Right? Cousins and Bell are examples of how it should work. Owners offered $Xm. Player thinks they deserve $Y, player doesn't sign the contract. The CBA works such that they aren't particularly hurt by that decision. They are tagged and still get a **** load of $$ or they are not and someone else can pay them.

If the split is what Del says (55% players), they are getting more than the owners. However, I think the owners were playing games with what their share actually ended up being. I don't know if it was 10% worth, though.

The reality is that Costco is its employees as is any major business. However, without the capital behind it there is no Costco. NFLPA is a joke of a union. Every member is a private contractor willing to literally step on the neck of his fellow member to get his share of the pie. Now you can argue what the share of the pie should be and I tend to believe pensions and health care should be increased so that there is some money there for these guys when they break down. The pay is the pay and is pretty damn good.

How many colleges players are there, any would step up and play in the NFL. This attitude of we a are better than the game , we won't be here , we we we , walk out there are fantasy leagues for anything. It has taken baseball a long time to come back with their strike attitude. Not one of the NFL players is getting a raw deal, the practice very little, actual playing time is how many minutes, yet the benefits they have and salary they have, please. Look how many paid up front rookies never playing a down in the NFL fail. Look how many player run to the money instead of loyal to an owner or team , career never is the same in the name of money. How many out there say the owners are greedy say the dame thing to the owners of the place they get a pay check from. No one in the NFL had their arms twisted to play.

Look guys, we're all arguing about things that are not going to change.

I'm pointing out the opportunities that these guys have that very few on this planet have. They have the opportunity for a first class education but do most take advantage of that? No!
They have opportunities to make more money in a short period of time than most will make in a lifetime. But a lot go broke because they have no sense of fiscal responsibility.

Do the billionaire owners need the players? Yeah right! They do not need these players. It's the other way around.
There is always someone right behind You waiting to take your place. There will never be a shortage of players.

pretty sure a NFL player can set up a additional retirement fund, allocating 10%

Yes they can, however most don't. So make it a rule with payouts after they retire so they aren't broke with medical bills.

Del, are you saying the owners only clear $25M? If so, that's a lot of bullshit to build and deal with for a paycheck that Kirk Cousins nearly earns...

well then they need to man up, nobody is holding my hand telling me to contribute to a retirement fund.

Time to put those big boy pants on.
