PITTSBURGH — Martavis Bryant is not what you’d call a natural. Well, at least not in front of cameras and microphones.
That much becomes clear within a minute of talking to the Steelers’ rookie wide receiver.
While polite and engaging, there’s efficiency in Bryant’s answers.
“It’s going good, a great experience,” Bryant said Thursday after the Steelers’ sixth OTA session of the spring. “Doing a lot of learning. Coming in every day and working hard.”
Besides, the 22-year-old is more focused on playing football than talking about it.
On the field, Bryant seems far more comfortable, and at 6-foot-4 and 211 pounds, he certainly looks the part. While there’s much work to be done, the Steelers believed they have a player in Bryant, using a fourth-round pick on him in last month’s draft.
In three years at Clemson, Bryant caught 61 passes for 1,354 yards, 13 touchdowns and was honorable mention All-ACC last season.
But Bryant played in the sizable shadow cast by first-rounder Sammy Watkins.
In Pittsburgh, Bryant is not expected to be the go-to guy, at least not any time soon.
He has talent, but it’s raw. He has a tantalizing blend of size and speed, though admittedly Bryant has to improve upon “everything.”
Among Steelers’ receivers, he’ll likely start out fifth on the depth chart behind Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey. During spring practice, coach Mike Tomlin has advised the rookie to follow around Brown, the two-time Pro Bowler, in particular.
On Wednesday, Tomlin blistered Bryant for a lack of effort during a drill. “You would never see 84 (Brown) do that!” Tomlin yelled.
While some have questioned Bryant’s work ethic, Brown’s is beyond reproach.
“Coach told me to watch everything AB’s doing,” Bryant said.
“Try to model my game a little bit after his. Also keep some of the things that I’ve got.”
What Bryant mostly has is his size, and that’s for what the Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have been clamoring.
Of the four receivers ahead of him, only Hewyard-Bey stands taller than 6-feet.
With Jerricho Cotchery taking his 10 touchdown receptions last season to Carolina, the Steelers are in dire need of a tall, red-zone target and deep threat.
Whether Bryant is that missing piece is to be determined.
“We’ll see,” said Brown.
