WR's

Don't quite understand the attraction to Moye.

Mostly it's that he's a local guy and a Penn State-er and we like it when local guys make the Steelers. Also (and I know this because he's from my town) he is a really high-character kid and after Troy, Moye would be the player least likely to be pulled over with a weed-filled Blunt in his car, Tweet pics of his johnson, accused of sexual assault, or get stabbed while drunk off his *** on the South Side.

Most of the board would take a team full of felons who win a SB over a team of nice guys who didn't, and I get that, I'm just sayin'....

The first person I heard talk about hand size was Chuck Noll, who thought it was just invaluable in recruiting/scouting. It seems to matter.

Sometimes size does matter. So does talent and hard work. Hard work will beat talent when talent does not work hard, reference Hines Ward.

I just read a short commentary regarding our 4th draft selection on Steelers depot. It seems some urging by Tomlin for a rookie to put forth more effort has questions regarding work ethic and bust projections. Comments like this kid won't even see the field his rookie year or dress on game day. It is interesting how one play and 15 seconds of words in a coaching environment can lead to this. I just want to make a couple of points regarding these thoughts. The Steelers have posted back to back 8 and 8 seasons. The steelers lost their second and third wide outs from last years depth chart. The roster has huge openings for wide outs. The remaining wide outs on the team from last year have not shown that they were going to be the next guy to fill those empty spots. With 4 or 5 spots up for grabs this is likely one of the best teams to be a rookie wide out in the league. Every one of these guys have a real chance to be playing on game day because of what is in front of them.

I see what you mean..

However I often wonder if its true or not. Does moye really have a shot vs. Lance Moore who is under contract? Does a late rounder or UDFA really have a chance to unseat uncle Jarvis?
They played ziggy hood there on the left tackle so long.........
Beachum was better than adams on the left all along. but he was a 7th Round pick. He didn't get a shot until Adams screwed the pooch and SOMETHING had to be done.
Adams was a 2nd round pick ...

So I wonder whether EGOS of the coaches or GM get in the way... Or money spent.

In the case of wide outs I think they do. Other positions might have different issues. The only lock I see on the team is Brown. After that there are lots of spots wide open. For example if Bey drops the ball all the time he will be dropped like a hot potato. We have some free agents that were just guys or high rated prospects that have not been able to stick. They were also available cheap or we would not have been able to sign them. I do not see anything that is looking like a solid lock for quality on the team. The only edge I will toss out there right now is Archer and Bryant, as they are 3rd and 4th round picks in their rookie years as the team has not had enough time to try and develop either of them yet or to make sure of what they will do at the next level.

Lance Moore is a proven slot receiver who has always performed when healthy.

Last year stats for him were not that impressive, he produced at I think 1/2 to 1/3 the level of Crotchery. Not saying he is a bad guy and could not take a spot, at this point he is just one of the guys. I really thing all of the slots behind brown are up for grabs this year and any of these guys could get one of them. The fact that no one seems to have a big edge means it will be up to who works hard and shows something this year and it could be Moore.

He was hurt last season. He had 8 TDs in 2010 and another 8 in 2011. In 2012 he had 65 catches with an average of 16 yards and 6 TDs. I think Moore is the #3 WR without question as long as he is healthy.

He was injured, if you watch film on him, he's an upgrade over Cotchery.

Joe

I am not saying he will not be the guy but at this point if he gets beaten out do you think he will be kept? I don't. I also was very pleased with his signing by the way and think he is a good prospect. I just do not see anyone with a guarantee on the position other than our man Brown, cause we know what Brown can do for you.

I see one and three locked down. For me it is who gets the nod at 2,4, and 5 WR spots............

I think Wheaton will get a hard look at two and Bryant a hard look at 4.

Hopefully both will step up as we will need some production early from at least one of them.....................

PITTSBURGH — Martavis Bryant is not what you’d call a natural. Well, at least not in front of cameras and microphones.

That much becomes clear within a minute of talking to the Steelers’ rookie wide receiver.

While polite and engaging, there’s efficiency in Bryant’s answers.

“It’s going good, a great experience,” Bryant said Thursday after the Steelers’ sixth OTA session of the spring. “Doing a lot of learning. Coming in every day and working hard.”

Besides, the 22-year-old is more focused on playing football than talking about it.

On the field, Bryant seems far more comfortable, and at 6-foot-4 and 211 pounds, he certainly looks the part. While there’s much work to be done, the Steelers believed they have a player in Bryant, using a fourth-round pick on him in last month’s draft.

In three years at Clemson, Bryant caught 61 passes for 1,354 yards, 13 touchdowns and was honorable mention All-ACC last season.

But Bryant played in the sizable shadow cast by first-rounder Sammy Watkins.

In Pittsburgh, Bryant is not expected to be the go-to guy, at least not any time soon.

He has talent, but it’s raw. He has a tantalizing blend of size and speed, though admittedly Bryant has to improve upon “everything.”

Among Steelers’ receivers, he’ll likely start out fifth on the depth chart behind Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey. During spring practice, coach Mike Tomlin has advised the rookie to follow around Brown, the two-time Pro Bowler, in particular.

On Wednesday, Tomlin blistered Bryant for a lack of effort during a drill. “You would never see 84 (Brown) do that!” Tomlin yelled.

While some have questioned Bryant’s work ethic, Brown’s is beyond reproach.

“Coach told me to watch everything AB’s doing,” Bryant said.

“Try to model my game a little bit after his. Also keep some of the things that I’ve got.”

What Bryant mostly has is his size, and that’s for what the Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have been clamoring.

Of the four receivers ahead of him, only Hewyard-Bey stands taller than 6-feet.

With Jerricho Cotchery taking his 10 touchdown receptions last season to Carolina, the Steelers are in dire need of a tall, red-zone target and deep threat.

Whether Bryant is that missing piece is to be determined.

“We’ll see,” said Brown.

I like Lance Moore. I thought it said a lot when his HOF QB singled him out for praise as a nobody, then started looking for him in the red zone a lot. That speaks volumes for me. That said, he's a very average receiver whose play has fallen off. I don't see him grabbing a huge role with us: something like 40 catches and 4 TDs. I think a lot of our slot production will come from Wheaton when he kicks inside.

Reading the different websites Wheaton and Moore have looked great.

Hearing Bryant is only looking like the No. 5 WR, he may not make the team. What do you do if this is the case and Justin Brown continues to shine like he has? Do you keep Bryant and get rid of Brown anyway? Get rid of DHB? I see no way Bryant will stick on the practice squad.

I hope he improves and sticks but a possible weakness coming into this year could turn out to be a strength. Should be interesting to watch. Can't wait for camp and the pre-season.

If he looks like the fifth receiver he will make the team, they may even keep an extra one this year and go with 2 RB 1 FB since archer can play a bit at both spots. Tight end is another spot that could be hanging on to an extra player this year. The offensive line may go with 8 instead of nine for a change. They may run the ball less this year in number of times per game than other years so as to save wear and tear on Bell and Blount.

I think after two 8-8 seasons they will keep the five players who are best at running routes and catching the ball, with the added implication of salary cap money.

Glad Bryant wasn't a third round pick! There would be 80 pages on why he has the measureables but no heart or desire. See dri archer thread

They haven't even started training camp yet. If he looks like the No. 5, that means he's ahead of guys with at least a year of NFL experience. Not a bad start.

Whatever happened to Justin Brown ?. I remember this guy looking real good in a couple preseason games last year. He appeared to look better than Wheaton at the time. He made some tough circus catches, and then fell off the face of the earth.

I think he pulled the rookie fade. Looked like he was pushing for a spot on the 53-man roster at the start of training camp but then he just hit the proverbial wall. But I don't think he really outshined Wheaton at any point...the coaching staff was really high on Wheaton through training camp and all the way until he hurt his finger in London. Apparently Brown looks pretty good in OTAs so far but let's see whether that sticks through the preseason.

Brown was pretty average and did nothing to stand out. DIdn't have the speed that Wheaton has and didn't use his size to take advantage of the smaller DBs. He was a fringe roster player when he was drafted and still will be this year. I would not mind at all seeing him stick on as the fifth or sixth receiver.

Brown has looked very good in OTA's. If he keeps it up in camp, he may push someone off the roster.
