The XFL has a real chance to make it. Even casual fans have noticed how far the quality of NFL football has fallen in just a few years. It's no wonder when you pretty much outlaw practice.
The NFL sets the tone, so now colleges and high schools hit less in practice. Nobody can block, nobody can tackle. Coaches now just gameplan around trying to trick the defense.
It wasn't long ago that 3rd and 2 was a run down and the offense would concert most of the time. What is 3rd and 2 now? It's usually a pass, not because of any strategy of surprise but because very few teams can actually block well enough to gain a yard if the defense is expecting it.
That's why a team might pitch the ball outside on a key 4th and 1. Because even with pro bowlers on the OL, they have no confidence they can block a run play when the defense is prepared for it.
That's pathetic. It's also why it is possible that the XFL can gain a foothold if they build their league around great blocking and tackling. Or simply, they let guys hit each other.
