Per Gerry Dulac,

I don’t think I said that. I said he could improve on last year, him personally. Not much worse it could get for him. He ain’t my first second year r third choice. But if comes, he comes. We either do well or flame out. Either way should be a win long term.
He wasn't awful last year. 63% completion, 3,897 yards, 28 TD-11 INT. He was sacked 40 times and lost a couple fumbles. Could have been a lot worse on that team.

I don't know man. There's more than anecdotal evidence of players open in the middle of the field and the QB's either ignore them, don't see them or are instructed to play outside the numbers. Wasn't there a story that Tomlin was upset with Wilson after the first bengals game for something like that? I can't quite remember.
Yeah because Russ didn't go along with Tomlin's offense, something along those lines, and after watching the offense the rest of the season, especially the second Bengals game, it's obviously true, we threw all over them, then in game two at home, we go run, run, pass again.

Report is Fields won't even consider coming back unless he's assured that he's the number 1 guy.

Well if I remember correctly you stated Russ being the Vet/SB winner he would make everyone on O better from the leadership he brings to the table. I imagine you believe the same thing with Rodgers but even more so......with him being arguably the bestest QB EVER!!!!

Exact same thing people said about when we brought Russ in last year. Weird.

So all the griping about the offense and not using the middle of the field. Now they get a guy in Metcalf and possibly Rodgers, who will use the middle of the field regardless of what so many believe Tomlin orders, and it's still wrong?

Tomlin used the middle when he had Ben. He hasn't had the players to do it. We biitch about the wrong thing. The issue should be the fact that he hasn't had the right players offensively. That's his fault, it's not a pass.
I just don't like A-A Ron...

Which apparently we wouldn't give him and that in itself is very odd. I wonder if Rodgers is told he is the starter coming in if he signs with us?

Fair point. I don't want Rodgers. I don't want any of the free agent QB's that are available, but unfortunately the Steelers put themselves in a hole at QB and will now be forced to bring in one of the scrubs available.

We thew the ball something like a total of 7 times in the 1st half in the last game of the year against the Bengals. Coming out from half-time we get the ball and the Bengals have like 9 or 10 guys in the box. I said to myself that it would be a great time to go play-action. Russ does audible....but it is a run to the right side for a loss. So apparently Russ wasn't aloud to audible out of the run. He only could flip which side the run was to. Something Fields stated also when he started for us.

I am sure things will be different if/when we bring A-Rod in.

Russ did make everyone better, at least until they figured out just to pressure him up the middle. Rodgers I am not so sure, he may but he is also a very different cat. Russ was somewhat humbled by his Denver experience. I am not sure Rodgers was. Will he live without all of "his guys"? I am not so sure he will. Will he have the arm left to take advantage of Pickens and Metcalf? I was hoping Fields would sit and learn how to throw the ball with touch. He(Russ) is also younger than Rodgers. At least Rodgers can see over the line though.

Ben's last season we saw Tomlin's revamped offensive scheme and philosophically.....until we reached the 4th quarter anyway and Ben did Ben and had 7 fourth quarter come from behind wins.

Maybe Tomlin let's Smith open up the offense and use every inch of grass. Or maybe Tomlin sees an aging Vet and will want to limit his TOs.
Yeah, that's a good point. I think Rodgers is like Ben in that he'll do what he wants. That can be bad, but in the case of the Steelers offense, can it get much worse?

All comes down to if we run the same offense schematicly. If we change what we have been doing who knows what happens. For example....A quick pass on a slant route on the side where an extra blitzer is coming goes a long way. That would entail us use the middle of the field and the slant route itself. Two things that every D in the league knew we wouldn't ever do. And defenses schemed for that weekly. Making it even harder for the stuff that we did do. It did limit our TOs though. It also limited our offense....drastically.

I agree and will do the same. I wanted Rodgers when he was first available before the Jets got him even though I know dude is off field nuts, but there is no doubting his football resume. Problem is if Wilson (who is still semi-mobile) can't escape what this turnstile O-line allows to go on in the backfield...what is going to happen to Rodgers? The only advantage to him is he can read a defense well and can release the ball quickly(when he wants to....) He could give you a 1 to 2 year window to win it all..and with Metcalf here now...still it's a big maybe.
His only real advantage is being able to see over the line and make quicker reads. Like you said when he wants to.

Russ the legend.

Meh.....I didn't see that big of a difference in play between Russ and Fields. I did see a difference in what they let each qb do. Fields did well with what they let him do while they limited him....both in the pass and when he ran.

In the end Russ made all of the players worse for his play.

for the last games I agree. The biggest difference between them really comes down to Fields needing to make better decisions and throw the ball with a bit more touch. I would also like to see him be more decisive in using his legs. But it won't matter if he is worried about being beat out by a mid round rookie.

Russ made everyone better when he was playing the absolute trash, the draft top 5 pickers!

Shocker

Then he played legit teams and made everyone look worse.

Maybe it wasn’t Russ at all and he was just as average as JF but in a different way and the guys all looked better when they were playing trash teams?

Seems more probable than Russ elevating others

I know. You and the other critics say the same thing on Fields. I saw good things from him last season with what the Steelers let him do. As far as his running....you could see they told him to slide as soon as someone started coming up on him. That obviously limited his fumbles....but also took a large part of his game off the table.

To be honest. I would rather have Ben than ARod. Sure I am biased. It is was it is though.

Ben>ARod
