Pickens being traded to Dallas?

That deal was f'n stupid too. This move puts us in a worse position then we were at this point last year...

No words. Just stupid.

The only thing stupid has been Pickens behavior as player. He's had 3 years to get his head out of his *** and put his big boy pants on.

He could have easily been signing a big contract extension with the Steelers had he just went about his buisness like a professional and gave 100% all the time doing his job.

What has his progression been? Nothing. Acting like a petulant child and playing half *** on plays.

I was rooting for him since they drafted him from Georgia. Which i watched just about every game he played in. What a disappointment after 3 years.

He did it to himself. The Steelers have enough problems to solve. I wish him well.

Getting rid of him had to happen, the way it was done was stupid

If all that was being offered was a 4th rd pick for him before and during the draft-go ahead and draft his replacement and don’t leave a huge hole in the WR room when you eventually do move him-he was never going to stay this year so prepare for the departure. What happens if DK goes down?

I don't think it's that complex, or devious. It's just...comfortable. Everybody's comfortable. When you are comfortable, you just make the decisions that are easiest.
Nothing complex about a complacent owner that doesn't give a rats *** about the product as long as his bottom line isn't affected, it's quite simple. He cares about one thing $$$ which is quite common with a lot of rich people.

It's the Art Nutting standard...maybe someday a Rooney will take the helm again.

*He won’t block, he won’t run full speed unless he’s the primary, he’ll throw tantrums on the field and in the locker room, he’ll show up late to games and meetings. So what?

FIFY
If anyone watched the QB school videos over the last couple of years, you'll see how much O'Sullivan dislikes how Pickens plays.

You can tell how O'Sullivan likes when Pickens makes a play. But he's always complaining about lazy routes, or just no effort from Pickens.

And that's just on-field stuff. Sounds like Pickens was a handful off the field too.

It also sounds like Tomlin was pushing for this trade. Which fits with what Ramon says is part of Tomlin's philosophy: "I'll put up with you until I don't need to anymore". Again...if true, it's another reminder that refusal to air dirty laundry in public in press conferences isn't the same thing as actually being supportive of a player.

The only time last year I was surprised / bought into hype about a press conference was when Tomlin was talking trash about DJ on the Rats. I've never heard him be negative like that about an opposing player. Especially when there was such an easy PC answer to give. I think he genuinely dislikes Johnson.

Which 4th round WR were we going to draft that was going to replace Pickens on the roster this year?

Would they be better than any of the many WR3/4 guys we already have on the roster? My guess is no.

I don't mind choosing a 3rd next year over a 4th this year. I just think Pickens was probably worth more than that to us on the roster.

Tomlin's super power is supposed to be relationship management. Find a way to make it work for one more year IMO.

But the team has more info than I do...

Who said it had to be a 4th round pick for the WR?

They knew he was going to be traded, use an appropriate pick at any round to fill the void even if he wasn’t traded yet. We used to be really good at finding receivers on day 2 of the draft

Regardless of whether Tomlin is a great, good, average, or horrid coach, There is very little chance he ever wins another superbowl with the Steelers... change is often a catalyst to coaches growing and expanding out of comfort zones... the guy has been here almost 20 years... he is stagnant.

The areas he has to improve on to win in the current era he simply doesnt need to, because he is too comfortable.. no head coach in any sport should stay in a place over a decade... its just not a great way to win...
This is why Nick Saban won so many National titles at Alabama. He adapted his style as the game changed.

I didn’t see anyone really worthy this draft. It was a poor receiver draft.

I think moving GP this year is a sign that they will go closer to AS. System. Clearly they didn't do this last year.
The new running back fits
Woods fits better.
Metcalf fits better.2 solid tight ends.
AS only needs Wr1 in his system.

Nerve struck, keyboard tough guy enabled. :ROFLMAO::love:

BTW, here’s the thread, start on page 3, as it goes along multiple posters are not only saying it would be dumb to trade him, but also that it would be dumb NOT to pay him big $$$.

Then, when you’re done there, take the first spot in the apology line.

And when you approach, bend the knee.

Naw….i stand by what I said. Anyone that calls for apologies because he supposedly ( not that I am reading 10 pages) took heat on a football message board is a ******* p ussy.
Goes right along with the type that threatens to block someone. P ussy.

To me Noel was the only one left in the 3rd and even the needy Cowboys didn't see him worthy of their 3rd, that says a lot and even then, they wouldn't give up the pick for GP, that says a lot more.

As someone else said, we fans were over valuing him Pickens, I was the first to say that a 2nd round pick or nothing, but clearly he was such a headcase + the impending new contract that no one else wanted him nearly as much as I thought.

I think this is a misconception because Smith's offenses have generally only had one competent WR1/2 outside of his two years in Tennessee. In terms of points, he's ranked 10, 4, 26, 15, 26, and 16. A legit WR2 would make a big different for the offense, especially when you have a bunch of backup-level/washed up veterans playing QB.

I am as guilty. As @Avoid_Lloyd pointed out gleefully, I thought they valued him to the point of not trading him and if they did it would be for 2 day 2 picks. I was obviously wrong. From what I heard no one was offering much of anything for him during the draft and short of a day 2 pick. I certainly overvalued his price. I guess the fact he only has a year left coupled with his behavior and inconsistencies made him toxic. When Dallas felt the heat after missing out on a receiver they ponied up a third and they jumped.

Nah. I disagree with that. I don't think they are sinister; which is what you are implying. They want to win, they are just stuck in ways that worked 20 or 30 or 50 years ago and maybe don't work as well now. When people say things like that it's like Rooney, Tomlin and Kahn are sitting in a room developing ways to screw with Steeler fans, rubbing their hands together and laughing diabolically like Dr. Evil or something. It's silly.

If you really believe what you posted there, why bother?

It just seems like he prefers a tightend that can catch and block be the second guy.

I wonder.....when Pickens first started doing his ****....did Tomlin sit him down and lay down the law to him? What he expects from him? Or did he blow it off as no big deal? Possibly in between the two scenarios perhaps.

I don't recall Pickens being that much of an issue his first season. Maybe my memory is off on that.

Point is. At some point when you keep drafting players that have the issues that the Pickens, Claypool, Johnson...AB...have maybe lay the law down from the get go. Maybe eventually you have to suspend them for a game. Or do not draft these type of players.

Whatever they do going forward hopefully they do something different because Tomlin's way has not worked for a long time if it ever did work.

I'm not sure Pat Freiermuth or Kyle Pitts fit that description. Better talent wins games and WR2s like Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin (maybe) won't get it done.

Naw your 10 are based on talent alone, not being an elite QUARTERBACK that knows how to WIN and LEAD....Huge difference...really huge

I love Baker but no ...Stroud absolutely not...Kyler Murray ? No chance....Herbert is one game over .500 and isn't clutch at all....Talented yes but as a winner hasn't shown it at all....Those 4 gotta go...GOFF is ahead of all of them too...

And you would take Rodgers over Hurts under center for us? I can't believe I just read that...You would want Rodgers over Hurts under center for the Steelers right now?

Not seeing that at all...

I suppose you had Will Howard and Riley Leonard as the top 2 QBs in the draft. They met in the Championship so they must have been the best 2 QBs.

The only point I totally disagree with you on is calling his regular season record slightly above average. He is 10th all time in winning percentage amongst coaches who have at least 100 wins in the regular season,. That is not slightly above average for regular season, success. I just think some people lose sight of the fact that you can want for more but still be appreciative of what you’ve had. And I’m not speaking about you.
I am one of those who call Tomlin “slightly above average”. I come to that opinion because his playoff record (with 100% control of the team) is abysmal and drops his ranking substantially. If his playoff record matched his regular season record, I would give him a B+ to A-.

Actually neither...

But anyone who says Hurts isn't a Top 10 QB should re-evaluate how they evaluate QB's
