Coordinators Thread

Its an upgrade this way. He is visable. Can't hide like Austin. Austin and Tomlin hid behind eachother.
Like was mentioned a lot of these hires had some buzz surrounding them. Known to have strong points. So not only is their role clear and there is no confusion who does what… I like that they look competent.

A lot of smoke around Graham today. There are multiple analysts who would love the hire. I've read he's elevated defenses with no talent, which is why the overall stats are bad. Advanced analytics look better for the performance and he's not married to a specific scheme, but rather adapts the defense to the players. I see the vision, though he wouldn't be at the top of my list.
Good to hear that, because I was initially disappointed with the hire. I like when coaches are adaptable to their personnel. Let's be honest -- other than Maxx Crosby, Graham didn't have a lot to work with in Las Vegas.

Hired.

Adam Henry— ties to Dallas as Wr Coach
James Campen—Played and coached….Green Bay
Raymond Chinyoung— Dallas Cowboys coach
Patrick Graham— hired by Mike McCarthy as a Lb Coach in Green Bay
Scott McCurley—-worked for Mike in GB,then worked for him in Dallas.
Gerald Alexander— second stint with Pittsburgh. …… familiarity.
Jason Simmons— oh look. Mike had him in GB for several years.

Is there more?

Now. I’m not doing this as an overly critical comment. Simply an observation with a comment or two.

Me being a bit of an A-hole thinks WTF ? Are you giving all your buddies jobs? Are you scorching the earth high and low for the best candidate? Or simply going with familiarity? WTF? Something stinks here.

Optimistic me says maybe they are the best hire, and as any player or coach I will give them every opportunity to succeed. And we have to trust our new HC to put the best talent forward.
It's just generally how it goes in both professional and college football. Coaches like having guys around who they are familiar with, and know what to expect from them. Look no further than Matt Campbell at PSU as another prime example.

Good things said on McAfee. Has done lots without much help. Won't play, we are what we are defense like Mike Austin. Will use the chess pieces of strength against the opponents weakness.

Just odd to have a college OL and an NFL OL coach take the RB spot if the report was correct.
Eh assistants shuffle around more than you think... on rare occasion even from O to D

See part of the ***** about the Rooneys being cheap was really that they were old school and still had multiiurpose coaches

We arent long removed from every team having assistants that covered multiple positions.. so ol/rb isnt a stretch at all

So he’s a little on the short side. Height shouldn’t have anything to do with it.

****-ing Hillarious, thank you for the chuckle this morning……..

Damn right slash, this new coaching staff is starting to shape up. Of course we need to see field results, but I already see a head start as opposed to last years debacle. When looking at these differences, one can see the deficit the tomlin regime had.

Last year’s debacle was all about waiting for an answer from Aaron. It went on way too long. Let’s hope he is more decisive this time around. 🍻

I have a feeling that leash will be a lot shorter this time around.

Looks like McCarthy is beefing up his coaching staff-especially the offensive side of the ball. I like what he’s doing with the offensive line. McCarthy always had top ranked OLines. I will post a link soon. Looks like Jahari Evans from the Saints to join James Campen. I love the attention to the trenches

Gotta disagree with you here on the roster

Our offensive skill players are easily bottom 1/3 of the league

We need another solid offensive tackle

The DL relies on Heyward to put on his Superman cape to be decent at stopping the run, maybe Harmon is better next year and becomes dominant but Heyward is due for a decline and this group is below average when Cam isn’t great

The inside LBs are underperforming and you probably need an impact guy brought in

In the secondary Porter Jr could be a star. Ramsey stinks as a safety and got cooked badly late in the year. Elliot is good when healthy but we really need a true FS and a CB2

Lots of holes
DK is not a bottom 1/3rd WR. Gainwell and Warren are very good. Our TEs with PF and Wasnhington are also very solid. We need a QB and another WR, but we are pretty good otherwise. DL is not terrible if we play enough guys in their proper spots. CB is OK. ILB we need someone to go with Wilson. Safeties we could use some help.

Not too thrilled with the oline coach. He started off good, but after that bounced around for several years and was on some teams with bad olines. I also don't think he has coached for a few years

Gainwell is a UFA
Pierre is a UFA
FS could use an upgrade
one G short who is a UFA

Just noting that these areas of right now aren’t ok.

Although that is subject to change ..

I thought I would dig into what happened with Campen and here is what I dug up:

1. 2022: The "Overachiever" Year

In his first year with Carolina, Campen was actually hailed as a hero.

  • The Performance: He took an offensive line that ranked 31st in 2021 and turned them into a top-15 unit.
  • The Contribution: He successfully integrated rookie Ikem Ekwonu at LT and helped Austin Corbett and Brady Christensen find their rhythm at Guard. By the end of 2022, the Panthers had a "bruising" identity, and players were publicly begging the front office to keep Campen on staff.

2. 2023: The "9th Guard" Disaster

Then came 2023, and everything that could go wrong did. The line became arguably the worst in the league, contributing directly to Frank Reich getting fired after just 11 games.

  • The "Fat" Issue (Injuries): The primary contributor to the failure was a historic run of injuries. The Panthers went through nine different starting Guards in a single season. Both starting guards (Corbett and Christensen) went down early, and Campen was forced to coach practice squad players on a weekly basis.

Nothing nefarious here.

Think about this- the draft process & FA starts imminently - do you want the HC to be teaching his fundamental philosophy to his staff while they process the rookie pro-days to see who might fit?

Or do you want a group, cobbled together rapidly, who know what it takes to make the McCarthy plan work so they can hit the ground running?

It's smart business.

Both sides of the trenches have historically been high priority for McCarthy.

OL & DL might be higher draft targets than people realise.

WTF is the hiring of Patrick Graham? The guy had the worst Defense in the NFL in 2019 as the Dolphins DC. They gave up 31 PPG and had the #32 Ranked Defense that season.

His best year as DC was in 2022 on the Raiders they ranked 22nd out of 32 teams! This guy is no DC....he's a bum! Might actually end up being worse than Teryl Austin!

Steelers are ******! We are the new Clowns of the NFL!

2023, the Raiders finished 9th in scoring defense (allowing only 19.5 PPG) and 15th in total defense. Over the second half of that season, they were arguably a top-5 unit in the NFL. He did that while the Raiders were ranked 26th in defensive spending. He was squeezing top-10 production out of a bottom-tier budget. I would say this was his best year.

In Miami it was their tank season. They were playing with a roster of undrafted free agents and "waiver wire" guys. Graham was essentially asked to cook a 5-course meal with a box of crackers. Same season they traded their best player Minkah to a familiar team.

I am not pumping this guy up to elite but his circumstances weren’t all that great to deal with. With the Steelers they arguably have some talent on that side of the ball. Let’s see how it unfolds with some talent available. In Pittsburgh he isn’t leading rebuilds which looked like they case with the mentioned.

DK himself isn’t bottom a 1/3 WR, but IMO collectively the offensive skill position players are bottom 1/3.

DK isn’t a complete WR who runs a full route tree, the other receivers are absolutely putrid.

Gainwell is a good 3rd back, Warren is a below average RB1, Rodgers was at the bottom of the league in many measurable, the TE group has had a pittance of yards and catches for years now.

Maybe they are better in McCarthys scheme but how many them start on the majority of other rosters other than DK and maybe Muth?

My impression of the staff so far is a lot of experience, lots of journeyman (that always have jobs), old school connections, professional coaches.

That sounds like what a 62-year old coach would like. Not sure who the "revolutionary" will be in the bunch. I suspect it will be a lot of traditional coaching staff decorum. Everyone will know their place. Everyone will plug along and do their jobs.

Again, it might work, but I also don't see a super degree of young talent in the assistants that will end up being great legacies of McCarthy's coaching tree.

Graham - Age 47, 10th location in coaching history (since 2002)
Campen - Age 61, was in Green Bay for 15 years then 4 stops since 2020
Henry - Age 53, 10th location in history (started in 2004)
Chinyoung - Age 37-38, was coaching high school 4 years ago
Simmons - Age 49, started in Green Bay for 8 years, we're his 4th team since 2020
