Joey Porter Jr.............................. not dad

It’s being reported that JPJ was healthy enough to play. If that’s the case, him being deactivated is absolute bullshit. He’s holding out without being penalized and the Steelers are forfeiting their leverage in any negotiation.

I gotta be honest. I dont really know who to blame in this situation. The market was well defined early. The team put him on the back burner took care of Benton and Washington. I think your guys ideas of trade compensation are a pipe dream. I see them getting a 1st from a contender which means bottom 10 pick.
Like if hes worth all some of you are saying in a trade......he should be highest paid corner in league or damn near.

The flip side of that coin is that if he can’t even bring back a first rounder from a playoff contender does he really deserve top 5-10 CB money?

I’d put him in that 6-12 range if he is paid where he ranks among his peers.

Best course at this point is get him on the field, let him play out the final year of a contract he signed and then negotiate as soon as the offseason allows. Franchise or transition tag him and try to work out a deal OR just ship him out if ANY team offers a first.

With Dean, Samuel, Everette all on the team and slot options with Echols and Ramsey there is zero reason to offer him a deal that the FO considers above his value to the Steelers, not market value…that means shyte…what value he brings to the Steelers should dictate his number as a Steeler.

Art the flaccid method of dealing with players
Rule with a limp, never from a position of strength

Trade him . He's a punk. How many overpaid players do we have right now? DK, Queen, TJ. Don't pay him. He is cancer.

The Steelers aren’t forfeiting nothing, they don’t negotiate once the season starts (Hasn’t happened in the past, they are well known for this)

Each game JPJ choses to miss puts him deeper in the hole, he needs to be out there showing he is one of the best (of course that ability could go either way).

Steelers have all the leverage, they have Franchise tag on top of rookie contract for this year, add in the fact they have an up & comer who played very well yesterday.

JPJ’s best choice is to get on the field of play.

TJ definitely earned his money yesterday

I’m thinking the Tomlin/Austin hurdle and a punctured lung had a LOT to do with his dropoff

Time will tell but he earned that $$$ yesterday

My annoyance with the team not getting a deal done has now shifted to JPJ for not having himself prepared to play the season opener or holding out with a fake injury.
This 100%!!!!

Ummm.. muth was the second TE in NFL history to have 60 or more catches his first two seasons... his third season was injury filled.. he missed 5 games and didnt finish several others... so the drop in production is legit
His 4th year he had 65 catches on just 78 targets.. that was 8th among all TEs
last year they cut his role to give snaps to Jonnu Smith
He only got 54 targets... he caught 41 passes... 27 th most no among all TEs...

For reference, the league leader had 126 catches on 169 targets... with the same targets... assuming the catch % stayed the same, Frieirmuth woulda caught 128 passes..

While most top end TEs are getting 800-over 900 snaps, he was down around 500ish his production when on the field is top 10 TE numbers
So you don't think its his fault he has underperformed his pay grade?
Its not all his fault as he did have some clowns running the show but it does nothing to change the mediocre numbers.
They are what they are.
Maybe the new offense turns him into Trey Mcbride? LOL
Bottom line he has been in an offense with 1 legitimate NFL wide receiver, a team literally starved for pass catchers for the majority of his career and has failed to turn into a top TE.

And yet, when he's targeted and gets a catchable ball, he usually makes the catch. Thing is, he has to be targeted. What keeps him from being one of the better "Go" TEs in the league is the number of opportunities/targets he gets. What keeps him from being a top all around TE is still his blocking ability.

Well summarized.

Regarding JPJ. Can let this be a long term distraction
Either get him back in the fold or trade him

People are blaming the team, but we don't know what was offered. Yes the market was set early, but if JPJs demands were ridiculous then I don't blame the team for taking care of the other guys first. I have a feeling his dad is not helping the situation. Porter is solid, but he is not the top CB in the league. Maybe top 10, but i still think he has alot to prove. I wouldn't even trade him, just let him sit and pout.

No! You clearly don’t get it. He’s being paid for holding out instead of forfeiting his base salary and being fined. JPJ for the win.

JPJ’s back will be miraculously healed as soon as he gets a new contract. Or traded.

I say we put the JPJ saga behind us and roll with the DBs that want to play.
“Volunteers not hostages”, someone once said.

If they do end up trading him, they won't get what we or they would have wanted. He is going to be a free agent or tagged, so a team would sign him and then have to give him a new large contract. That typically means you don't get much for him. A team would have to be very desperate to give them a 1st or even a 2nd for him at this point.

McCarthy said he wasn't going to play him until he had put in the work to be ready to play.

I guess we’ll wait until the Steelers are paying Porter a franchise tag salary before we agree it’s a bad idea to pay a player for holding out.
The tag will be well below the current market next year. about 24 mil.

The Steelers can chose whether the NFL fines are to be enforced or not. Sometimes teams wave fines / current contract salaries in good faith of getting a new / extension contract done. It is all part of the strategy of negotiation.

Back to the original claim of Steelers forfeiting to pay wages is by far from what reality is.

I hold true, the Steelers have all the leverage, JPJ would by far benefit by getting himself onto the field of play. If he ****-s around to much, injured reserve could end his season. His value would drop significantly.

PS. Currently he is not “holding out” but out due to injury. Until he is a healthy scratch, then the TEAM will determine wether he is a hold out or not.

I don't believe that he's on the PUP list, could be wrong, but I thought he was practicing with the team, again, could be wrong.
If he is healthy enough to practice, how is he not healthy enough to play?
I think this has more to do with lawyers and agents than football.
