What to do with Jarvis Jones if (by some miracle) he does not start.

At the beginning of the season, this is exactly what I think happens. If both are healthy, Jones starts. Harrison relieves during the game and his snaps are limited. The coaches have said as much.

If Jones is playing average, I think it stays that way, at least, through the middle of the season. If Jones is playing <gasp> above average <gasp> it stays that way all season.

If Jones is playing below average and showing no improvement during the season, Harrison moves up to start, unless Dupree is showing quite a bit on the left side where they could move Moats back to the right and still keep Harrison's snaps limited. They want to keep Harrison fresh in case we make the playoffs and he could still be on fresh legs.

Camp reports say Jones has too many injuries and is pass rush leaving something to be desired. Dupree and Chickillo are impressing, and Harrison offers far more vale as a run defender and pass rusher. Harrison due to his age is behind held out of action for now, but when the real bullets fly, I want him in there, not Jones. Unless Jones proves he can 1 ) Stay healthy and 2 ) Generate a pass rush, he has little value to the team. I'd hate to see Tomlin pull another Cam Thomas move if Harrison gets hurt by starting our weakest link on defense, and limiting a talent rookies opportunity. IMO Tuitt should have receive more snaps than he did with Thomas in front of him.

If both are healthy Jones will start. Harrison is older and can't handle starting 16 games. Plus the Steelers need to see if Jones can be the guy there. Harrison isn't going to last forever. Jones will start if healthy... bank on it.

Coach if you could start posting links to your made up stories I mean posts it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree on Tuitt, but what you want for starting at ROLB and what will happen are not the same. Vader and I don't agree on much on this side of the board (and do lots on the G&G side). We are both right on this. If healthy, Jones starts. Vader added in the notion that Harrison's body won't hold up to starting 16 games, which I only alluded to.

As I said, when the season progresses if Dupree shows something and Jones ain't, Jones will get pushed out of the starting ROLB spot. Either by Moats or Harrison. I like Moats, I think he will do average-above average on either side. IIRC, he played inside and outside LB at Buffalo (maybe both OLB spots, I can't remember) and is a solid tackler.

Chick my squeeze onto our roster if he is a special teams demon. Other wise he most likely will be a practice squad player.

You do realize that Moats plays LOLB and that Jones Plays ROLB two totally different positions. Dupree is playing left and so is Chick I believe. Harrison is Jones back up followed by H Jones. Once again he isn't having a bad camp.. which is only a week in anyway

You do realize that Moats did not play one snap at LOLB last season?

I'm sure he does, but, unless I am mistaken, the coaches have said Moats will be on the left this year with Jones on the right. Of course, something could happen like an injury or Dupree shows he is ready now, etc.

Left. Outside. Linebackers.

Back to the original posted question. If jones is not good enough to start is he good enough to be a backup or spot player? One needs to see what is behind him and are we likely to loose someone with more upside. If not he will at least be on the team. I was not a fan of him being handed the starting job, nor with his selection because of numbers, health issues, and his size. He may have a lot of great intangibles for example but we don't see much of them. I would hate to waste a roster spot on a guy approaching 28 yoa that has yet to show anything and take a chance of loosing someone that we might have for 5 years more than jones at this point.

Nooooooooooo, please don't drag out the thread.

who are we gonna lose? Howard Jones? Chikillo will make the team, we are going with 5 OLBs

You do realize Chickillo has yet to even play a preseason game. I know he is suppose to be having a great first week of camp but unless there is an injury or he is some special team demon he most likely will be a practice squad player.

Thanks Ark. Lol yes I do know. Moats was made the starter at LOLB. Really not that hard to keep up with these things. The Internet comes in quite handy

thanks for completing my idea, the team isn't losing no future star for staying this season with JONES (edit: fixed wrong name). But I still bet we'll keep 5 OLBs, especially with JJ injury history and Harrison's age

Lol @ so many posts starting with "you do realize..."

That's probably his most likely way to join the team. Gotta be killer on coverage.

No **** he's penciled in as the starter at LOLB. That does not preclude him from moving back over to the right. You were acting as if he played "AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT POSITION OMG NEVER EVER WILL HE PLAY ROLB NO WAAAAY".

Chick has already passed Howard Jones and Zumwalt. He looks to be among the best 8 linebackers. The Steelers might keep 9 or 10. At least that's what camp practice reports have shown.

And besides some made up **** from Coach why is Moats tomoving back to ROLB?? Oh because Chick has looked good against the 3rd and 4th team tackles the first week of camp. Oh OK.

From what I've heard, Chick may make the roster, but he ain't passing Moats on the depth chart at LOLB by the start of the season, barring injury to Moats.

* Arthur Moats is listed as the starter at left outside linebacker on the Steelers' initial depth chart. It's exactly where he expected to be when he re-signed for three years in March. But he's well aware of the competition coming behind him. First-round pick Bud Dupree is listed as his backup while camp phenom Anthony Chickillo, a sixth-rounder, is third string. Moats has liked what he's seen from Chickillo. "He's a high energy guy," Moats said. "He's definitely grasping the playbook really well. Just his bringing it every day, that's the thing that's really impressed about him. That same intensity, that same eagerness. He's definitely shown up."

Behind Uncle Jarvis on the right are Harrison Shayon Green and Howard Jones

Moats, Timmons,Shazier, JJ
Dupree, Williams, Spence, Harrison

Then we have the one LBer (can't think of the name ) who plays inside but dresses because he plays on our special teams unit. That's NINE right there. To say he is in the top 8 is just plan idiotic.

If he makes the roster it will be because of his play on special teams. Right now I would say he is at best our 10th LBer. Can he move up? Sure, but I think it is silly to say he will make the roster at this point off of the first week of training camp. You have to like what you see from him up to this point though.

Chick has a decent shot to make the roster. It's not insane to think we keep 10 LBs, particularly when you consider 1) Bell does not take up a roster spot for games 1-2 and 2) Senquez Goldson will probably remain on the PUP list. We can probably keep 10 LBs if we only keep 3 TEs and 5 WRs (I'm not sure a 6th WR will force his way onto the roster when you can probably get a guy like C.J. Goodwin back onto the practice squad).

To be clear, Chick is probably #10. He is behind Moats and Dupree at ROLB, Jarvis and Harrison at LOLB and the 5 ILBs (including Garvin who will make the team).
