What to do with Jarvis Jones if (by some miracle) he does not start.

Chick has a decent shot to make the roster. It's not insane to think we keep 10 LBs, particularly when you consider 1) Bell does not take up a roster spot for games 1-2 and 2) Senquez Goldson will probably remain on the PUP list. We can probably keep 10 LBs if we only keep 3 TEs and 5 WRs (I'm not sure a 6th WR will force his way onto the roster when you can probably get a guy like C.J. Goodwin back onto the practice squad).

To be clear, Chick is probably #10. He is behind Moats and Dupree at ROLB, Jarvis and Harrison at LOLB and the 5 ILBs (including Garvin who will make the team).

I'm sure it's a typo but Jarvis and Harrison play ROLB while Moats and Dupree are at LOLB.

Here is a quote from today's asked and answered.

"I am a Jarvis Jones fan, in that I like his potential as a playmaker and he seems to be someone who can really make an impact on this defense. There will be periods of a particular practice, or one practice over a several-day stretch where Jones looks like just another guy. After one pass-rush drill, Tunch Ilkin said out loud what everybody watching that was thinking: “If you didn’t know who was the No. 1 draft pick and who was the No. 6 draft pick, you’d think Anthony Chickillo was the No. 1 and Jarvis Jones was the No. 6.” There have been other snippets like that, but then just when a negative opinion starts to form, Jones puts together back-to-back days where he makes plays during the “tackle football” period. Then you saw him beating blockers and getting into the backfield and either blowing the play up for a loss or making the tackle himself for a loss. Jones largely has been able to stay on the practice field, which is critical to his development because he’s only a 25-year-old going into his third season. I still like Jarvis Jones as a player, and barring injury he will be the starter at right outside linebacker on Sept. 10 against the New England Patriots. After that, it’s going to be up to him."

This was in the answer section not some post by a fan that likes to get on to sports sites. Now the positives I have seen from this are a couple. One our draft picks are looking better than many folks thought they would, keeping in mind they are essentially being retrained to play a new position. Two Jarvis is looking better than many of us thought he would ever be including some members of the press. I will say he has already exceeded what I thought he was going to do this year and if he does have the break out season it is a good thing for the black and gold. If he does not and only becomes a quality back up for the rest of his time in the nfl it would still be ok even though he may have been drafted higher than one would like for that type of a role I would still consider that good for the team. Right now it looks like the latter scenario maybe the floor for Jarvis because he seems to be finally developing this year.

Garvin. That is the one name I couldn't think of. I agree Chicky is probably number 10 as of now.

Im pretty sure Chick and H Jones are in a battle for the last spot at OLB. I liked Jones and really didn't like Chick, but if those two are pushing each other to round out the position I am fine with whomever wins it. I don't think Zumwult has a shot. Special teams will tell more of a story than practice, as will actual gametime play... Anyone who thinks JJ wont be on the roster or starting game 1 has not been paying attention the past half decade. He will get every shot to play his way off the roster, even if he is blah... Ziggy Hood and Mendenhall come to mind... If Jones isn't more than an average guy he will be gone in UFA, not before

Chick has already passed Howard Jones and Zumwalt. He looks to be among the best 8 linebackers. The Steelers might keep 9 or 10. At least that's what camp practice reports have shown.[/QUOTE
Moats, Timmons,Shazier, JJ
Dupree, Williams, Spence, Harrison

Then we have the one LBer (can't think of the name ) who plays inside but dresses because he plays on our special teams unit. That's NINE right there. To say he is in the top 8 is just plan idiotic.

Based on camp play to date, he is among the best 8 on the field.

Special teams will play a strong role in determining that spot. Chick is showing better at OLB but H Jones had probably has a better hold on the special teams aspect of the competition. Jones also is the better athlete with more upside..will be interesting to watch these guys on games. Also when Uncle Jarvis has missed time it has been Shayon Green who Beachum has destroyed on one on ones has replaced Jarvis and ran with the first team at ROLB because his run defense has been the best.

It remains to be seen who will be where. We have some late round picks on the team now that seem to be doing well and made the 53 man roster. Beachum our starting left tackle who was able to take the spot from two guys that were both picked in the second round. McCullers was also a late rounder and was a project who will likely see lots more playing time. Chickilio has some very good numbers at the combine and has been doing well in practice. I would not be surprised to see him moving up the depth chart. I am pleased he is at this point looking like he is going to develop at a faster rate than Jarvis has.

If Harrison is not the man.

Something is definitely wrong with Tomlin...

BTW, Tomlin and Ben have been sexting me....

He just might turn into a better player then JJ........but you are reading camp reports for a week of training camp. If after 3 or 4 or maybe 5 preseason games if this kid is playing his *** off then maybe make a statement like that...but after one week of camp? Really?

After one week of training camp he has shown an incredibly quick first step and a great bend when engaged by the OT, two things Jarvis Jones has never shown and will never have. Being a stiff, slow, small , unathletic with no explosion and weak player is what Jarvis is, just a guy.

Yeah. As I said . I heard he had a good first week. Let's see how next week goes. Maybe he still will be the camp sensation. Maybe not. After it is allsaid and done he even might make the team.

I think the pecking order coming up Sunday till the last preseason game is subject to change. As then they can get live game tape.

Garvin and Chickillo I think will get the nod when it is all said and done.

I'm sure Chick is doing well at camp. But remember this is just camp. He hasn't even played a pre-season game yet. He's going against future grocery baggers now. Let's see how he does against the other teams future coaches, dentists and paralegals before we anoint him.

For all of you who were excited about Howard Jones...at times he has been taking snaps behind Shayon Green. It's been Green who's been seeing a lot of time with the #1 defense when Jarvis has been out.

I read that too...besides the shock & awe headline, if you get to the bottom of it, Butler is saying he wants a steady rotation of young & old at both OLB spots, let everyone get their licks in. Jarvis will get plenty of opportunity this season, I really hope he can perform up to par. The Steelers need to create much more pressure on the pocket, doesn't matter to me how they get it done. I also hope they can keep Deebo fresh enough to last through the season...if we make some noise we're really gonna need him down the line.

Don't kill my ****-stirring buzz, Tibs!

Keith Butler hints that James Harrison might start over Jarvis Jones.

Nothing wrong with that at all. It looks like they have learned from the error of putting too much on a player too soon. Maybe that hurt the development of Jarvis and he would have been where he is this year last year if not thrown to the wolves in year one. We will not know. On a positive side he does seem to be developing into a better player at least in practice this year. Now after the teams get into some preseason games we will hear how they are only playing against the other teams scrubs and guys that will be working construction in 3 weeks but it will be more than practice. I am just glad to see guys getting better and looking like they will be players instead of cut down casualties.

Wait!! I thought DL only played rookies over young guys. Butler is past his prime and needs to go right? How can he let Jones rot on the bench while an aged Harrison plays?

Nothing to see here Jarvis will start and have every opportunity to keep his job or not. Harrison at his age is better on a situational basis.

William Gay also stated on the terrible podcast that defensively they won't be changing anything. Go figure.

There's always a future for him In Arizona...I mean Tennessee...
