6th Mass Extinction Kicks Off

I'm almost certain this has something to do with the Reich Wingers, George Bush and any religion that is NOT the one of peace.

though, like the comments say, this is most likely due to the radiation from Japan.

Somehow this will be Bush's fault, the Reich Wingers and any religion NOT the one of peace.

They've accounted for the radiation...this is science not the Reich wing guessing game.

Polo- I am confused with the question you ask "how will this game play out for us". Are you referring to us as in humans? And if so what makes you think a bunch of starfish dying in the Pacific is anything abnormal? Species get obliterated all the time. This article seems to think that some parasite is killing off the starfish and has a 95% mortality rate. I would bet the 5% remaining will make the species stronger since for some reason they are immune to the parasite. These types of things have been going on for millions of years and will probably continue to happen for many more years. Some other bottom feeder will take the place of the starfish if they go extinct.

Sounds about right.

You can't possibly be dumb enough to think all that radiation from a nuke plant could possibly do any damage.

Better be careful, that **** wakes up Godzilla and he walks out of the sea and stomps on buildings.

99.999% of all species that have been on this planet are now extinct. Its time people accept the relatively certain fact that nothing lasts forever. You either believe in evolution or some higher power... if you are in the first group, you have to realize that the 5% that survive whatever is killing them will breed heartier starfish that may be more resistant, if you are in the second group then you believe whatever is needed can be recreated... either way humans spend too much time trying to preserve the status quo. Nature is in a constant flux. destruction leads to rebirth...

The growth of microorganisms like the one killing the starfish is linked to ocean warming and there has been no die off like this in recorded history. It's happened before, but not on this scale.

Climate science is dividing into two camps, the ' there is still a chance' camp and the ' we're done' camp. I personally think we're done, but we still have a chance...... sounds like a contradiction but what i mean is we will do practically nothing because new cars every year, new shoes every month, and lighting football stadiums at night to watch 'pituitary retards bang their heads together'(credit to Bill Hicks) is much more important to us.

browneyed starfish are still around. one just posted above me.

Global warming is the cause? Yeah, but funny how the actual article makes no such claim and instead specifically stated, "Starfish have been mysteriously dying ... Scientists who have spent decades studying the local ecosystem have yet to identify the cause."

Idiot scientists ... trying determine a cause for anything is a waste of time. Just call Elfie ... She always knows the cause. Too hot? Global warming. Too cold? Global warming. Too wet? Global warming. Too dry? Global warming. Too little snow? Global warming. Too much snow? Global warming. Starfish dying? Global warming.

Wouldn't that be a third "camp"?

And do I seriously have to explain to you that if "we're done," then that means, by definition, that we have no "chance"?

Yet again, Elfie, your point of view in the global warming debate:

No, it wouldn't be a third camp, it's just pointing out the truth in both positions. We are 'done' in my opinion because while there is still a chance to change things, we won't.

They can be conservative, I don't need to be. This type of event/s coming from AGW had been predicted years ago.

While scientists are reluctant to assign blame to climate change, Harvell explained that as oceans warm, outbreaks like this are more likely to occur.

“A warmer world would be a sicker world,” Harvell said. “Under warming conditions a lot of microorganisms do better. They grow faster. They replicate faster. Many of our hosts can actually be stressed by warm conditions. And so it kind of creates a perfect storm of sickness.”

Did 99% of species all disappear at one time (relatively speaking)? We are causing the organisms and the habitat they/we depend on to disappear at a rate never before seen, far faster than adaptation can make up for.

Oh and evolution does not fit into your spectrum of 'beliefs', it is fact.

Uh, yes. There was that meteor thingy that whacked the Yucatan and got rid of all the dinosaurs and their SUVs.

You don't understand that, yet can pontificate on both causation (we) and speed of change (evolution) like you can possibly quantify this?

You just might be the most arrogant poster since Vis/Franco.

This is what happens when we don't give starfish obamacare. Can't we levy a tax against whatever is killing the starfish and then somehow utilize that money to change the temperature of the sun?

Wonder if they'll start printing T shirts "I survived the 6th mass extinction and all I got was this lousy shirt".

Did you see this in my post----> (relatively speaking)

The reason I qualified my question with that phrase is because it took over 30,000 years after the Yucatan event to kill off all the dinousars, some adapted in that time...what we now call birds for example. We and all the species on the planet will be LUCKY! EXTREMELY LUCKY if we get 300 years. No life except for bacteria can adapt to the changes coming that quickly.

That would be with the 300 year perfect storm taking place (pun intended) stop ALL emissions now, start geo-engineering, and carbon sequestration.

It's not ponticication, I know for a fact as you do we are not going to do all those things full tilt. We have about a ten year window, maybe and there is just no way.

Just wish it was the damn rattle snakes and cotton mouths.not those cute little star fish

So after the cataclysmic Yucatan meteor strike, it was 30,000 years, or about 3-4 times the length of known civilization, until extinction.

BUT, if we don't do carbon sequestration NOW we only have 300 years, or 1% of that time?

Do you even understand how ridiculous your illogical posts are?

Arrogance and ignorance are not a good mix for you Elfie.
