Schefter reporting Steelers are now listening to trade offers for Bell (jets maybe)

I kind of chuckle a bit when I read all the Bill Cowher is god type comments. It's amazing how the legend gets stronger, the longer that he stays off the coaching field.Kind of like the bigger the fish gets with time. Anybody that was on this very board at the time must remember about how we all wanted Cowher fired, after all the great regular seasons we had, then all the huge disappointments in the playoffs.

Who was to blame for all the QB 's we went through? If I remember correctly Bill didn't even want to draft Big Ben.wanted Stacey Andrews, who went to the eagles I think. We were bitching back then about the run, run, pass play calling. And all sorts of other things. Now,of course I don't blame it all on Cowher, but let's not put him on such a golden pedestal.

I hope this post does not sound like a Mike Tomlin defense post,as I really think that he has held the team back for many years now,and is not the answer. We have certainly had our fair share of disappointments in the playoffs with him as well.

I would take Cowher in a second over Tomlin. Noll wanted Robert Newhouse over Franco.
Cowher went to 5 AFC title games, 3 of those with trash QBs, and another with a rookie QB.

This is correct. I was on the original board even before DD. There were many boards during the exodus. We even had one with FX girls. On the old board we had people like the Apologist and PFunk. We also had Hank the Tank and some Buffalo Bills girl named Karen. We also had BenZgaLsRulez.

Oh and "until"

how can one word stir so much ****

I have no idea. It's been so long I don't even remember who was fighting about it or what it was about. I remember them arguing about when some happens "until" something else happens.... still don't remember what it was.

I thought it was two words by BenZgsl RuleZ......”tit flap”. The guy had a way with the English language.

Were you there? The Kordell has to go posters were even in number to those defending him. It was obvious who was holding the team back...

The chin had many good seasons with O'Donnell, Tomzack, Miller, Stewart and Graham. Only a top coach could work around a bad collection of QB's and keep going 10-6 to13-3. If Tomlin had these jokers, he would have been fired long ago as the margin of error was very thin.

Well -- O'Donnell wasn't that bad. Rooney was just too cheap to retain him. Back then the Steelers lacked extra revenue suites at Three Rivers.

Cowher as I remember had an issue with the GM, Tom Donahoe. I'm not sure who made the Stewart pick, it was likely Donahoe.

Yes I was here genius. Watching the board and get enamored with his unique skill set. Making shoe commercials with Chin in after the SB in 96 before his breakout year in 97, all the while knowing his accuracy wasn’t going to get it done. Not with the O coords that were there. It wasn’t until Mularkey taking over the offense in 01 and using him as a complement rather than the feature which made him succeed. He just could not handle the pressure of the public, media scrutiny of his bad performances.

Cowher had many good seasons yet had problems in the playoffs. Whose to blame? Those players or the coach(es)? Double edge sword to your agendas isn’t it? Only a top coach would win with those QBs? Who brought them in? I know it’s hard for you, but try thinking your post out before you post.

Every one knew Cowher had an issue with Donohoe because he wasn’t in the same page with Cowher on 1st round picks. Stephens, Troy Edwards...to name but a couple. Cowher and the coords had more input after the first round while under Donohoe. The straw that broke the camels back was Donohoe stating the “team came out flat” during the 97 playoff loss in Denver, and telling of Woodson’s possible return as “we are not the reclamation project for players”. At that point his exit was inevitable.

ODonnell......lol, you are a joke. He was a solid player for Pitt under Erdhart’s offense, but when the Hess owned Jets offered him 3x money than the “cheap” Rooney’s could hope to offer with Three Rivers as their income base and his wish to “go home” shows how you don’t understand the cap era at that time when FA was just exploding.

Take a look at what QBs were signed after Cant Graham.

What will really suck is if the next coach has us wishing for Tomlin back.

Pass. I want 15 million to go towards the defense.

It will be $23+ million not $15. Remember Shazier is fully off the books next year. The amount of cap space we will have is going to be unprecedented for this team.

$8,718,000 Shazier dead money for this year.

We also have $6M in dead money from cut players in 2018 and like $200K for next year.

Good call. Dead money from cut players though mostly affects the year they were cut. We'll have more cuts, and IR players to pay as well. Shazier may be on the roster next year though? Not sure what his contract will be, since he won't be the same player.

I want to stick it to Bell and his slimy agent. Want to see what happens when you **** with the franchise? Expecting that big payday? BAM! Tag! You're it *******. No big payday, unless the Steelers trade you for 2 firsts.

Otherwise, you can bank on not playing another year. I know for a fact, the way Bell is throwing money around, he will not be in a position to hold out for 2 years, and we have him by the short hairs!

All this drama? All this tension? I want something for it, and my asking price is 2 firsts!

Shazier is UFA after this year. He is being paid on his guaranteed year 5 of his rookie deal the Steelers picked up last year. That's 100% off the books next season.

Either way Bell's $14M+ and Shaziers $8.7M are no longer on the payroll in 2019. That's a lot of coin to resign our own and to bring in a good free agent to fill a hole. To me the biggest void we have is opposite Haden (Burnt has to go) and on the DL in between Heyward and Tuitt. I know MLB is a concern but I think that's where I'd go with my draft pick. Corners and DL seem to get cut every year and we could find one or both to come in short term to fill those holes, next year anyways.

Seems like, if they think he might play in the future, but not next year, they could hire him as a coach and pay wtf they want, yes? If he can play, ever, and i dont think he will be able to, they can sign a reasonable contract, then.

No way he ever plays football again. If they want to keep him around as a coach fine. That won't impact the salary cap for us though.

I hope he holds out the whole year, and the Steelers slap him with the tag again. That would be hilarious!

Would that count as a 2nd tag again? He'd sign for the third tag, did you see how much money that is?

Read the CBA.

If he holds out for the entire year, the tag is void. The Steelers then can slap tag #2 on him all over again at $14.4M, though it may be less since the tag would be void.

Truth, I was just stating the Steelers are holding out hope for Shazier, and Shazier is working like he expects to come back. It would be a new contract with Shazy.

I can't conceivably think of how anyone is holding out hope that Shazier will play football again. The hope was that he would be able to walk again and lead a normal life. I know he's still working to get all of that back but he's not going to be a football player ever again.

We've moved on. Bostic is a stop gap for us and we will definitely go out and draft ILB next year.

I was on your bandwagon until I was involved with people who know the players and Shazier specifically. Initially I thought he had a back fusion, and that would have put him out for good. He didn't he had spinal stabilization surgery to strengthen his back, so potentially, his back would be stronger, once it fully heals.

No team in their right mind is putting him on the field again in the NFL. You want to talk about a liability issue from HELL. There is no way the NFL, their attorneys, or anyone in their risk management department would allow him to see the field again. Not to mention, does anyone really believe that he would return in even a glimmer of his former self given the amount of time away from the game and the fact that he basically had to learn basic motor skills from scratch again. Considering 90% of all movements is a function of muscle memory means there is slim to no chance that he would ever recover enough to be at the NFL level.

I can't imagine he does, either. My point is, if they do have some hope, they can circumvent the salary cap by
paying him handsomely.

Steelers now are “actively” shopping Le’Veon Bell

Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2018, 9:10 AM EDT

What a three weeks it’s been.

As of Week One, the Steelers were adamant that they wouldn’t trade running back Le'Veon Bell. Last week, they were suddenly listening to offers. Now, the media outlet of which they own a 1/32nd share reports that the Steelers are “actively” shopping Bell.

A trade will be impossible to accomplish without Bell’s cooperation, because there’s nothing to trade unless Bell is under contract. Before a deal can be done, Bell would have to be persuaded to sign a one-year contract. And given that Bell is concerned about overuse as he approaches his free-agency prize in March, he’ll likely want more than his current rate of $855,000 per week before signing anything.

Beyond satisfying Bell, the team that trades for him will have to make an offer the Steelers won’t refuse. The network partially owned by the Steelers says they want a second-round pick and a “good” player.

The problem for the team that pays Bell and compensates the Steelers becomes this: The team will be acquiring a one-year rental, with no ability to sign Bell to a long-term deal until after the regular season ends. That team also risks a postseason walkout by Bell, who may refuse to play for a playoff share (peanuts in comparison to his in-season pay) unless he gets a long-term deal to his liking as soon as the regular season ends.

To make this happen, it may require a suitor made desperate by, for example, a season-ending injury to a dual-threat workhorse tailback on a playoff contender. And so the Steelers would be smart to sit on Bell through Week Eight, waiting to see whether someone becomes sufficiently desperate to make the deal(s) necessary to make a trade.

And if there’s no trade, what happens next? Given that the Steelers are now openly contemplating life without Bell, the fallback to trading him may not be waiting for him to show up after Week 10 but rescinding the franchise tender before he can.

So the questions are:

Who is will to take a risk on Bell and him signing a long term deal at seasons end with the new team?

What do the Steelers consider a “good” player?

Will they focus on defense for the trade?

Is a second round pick fair enough compensation for the player Bell is?

Thoughts?!?

Game Day! Here we go!

Ol Florio nothing has changed.

Listening to trade offers is still listening to trade offers.

The hack is reaching for a non story.

He has ****** the organization and his teammates..

He needs to move on..the problem is getting something of decent value in return now...

Steelers will get next to nothing if they trade him....Bell is losing 850k a game while he plans his next "club" event...

I think Bell is "winning" this stand-off and the Steelers should of tried to trade him when he first declined their long-term offer months ago..
This is where the Steeler organization erred in its thinking...They never thought Bell would sit this long..
Bell won the bluff and in the end will be holding the chips...

Anytime you are losing 850 thousand a week, there is no winning associated with it.

On the Steelers side they slapped the wrong tag on him. But every week the hack doesn't play they get money into their pockets for free agency next year.

So that is a win for them.

For me the Steelers are still winning this standoff.

Disagree....

Bell will make that money back and then some with his signing bonus on his next contract with his new team...

The Steelers lose because this was the year that all was aligned for a Super Bowl victory...

Without Bell...and most importantly with all the drama and distraction this has caused within the organization...
I cant see us making that run this season...
