Tomlin Deserves Credit

It was never Tomlin's decision to hire OR fire TH begin with. Rooneys made that call. We will never know what MT would have done. But we KNOW Ben wanted Todd out at the end of the 2016 season. It couldn't have been more obvious.

I still think the team was better off with Toddster instead of The Bruce.

I’ve criticized the hell out of Cool Shades but as I said last week in another thread, credit given when credit earned.
The man has done a good job of turning things around and keeping the boys focused and it obviously shows.
He gained a lot of respect from me when he said we need volunteers not hostages. Great message sent to the team Coach Tomlin. He’s essentially saying stick it to Bell we’ll win with who is here.

Team always starts off slow and then picks it up (ex. tie the Browns in the first game, then later beat the **** out of the highly-regarded Panthers). Slow starts are a valid criticism but Shades gets it turned around.

With all the flack the guy has taken he really deserves a lot of credit with this team coming back and winning 5 straight and putting them in great position half way through the season. You can’t sit back and bash him when things are going bad and not say anything when things go well. Under all the circumstances between Bell and Brown this season and definicies on defense he sure has done a remarkable job. I will be the first and say I definitely was questioning his leadership and ability to put the team in position to be Super Bowl contender. He has proven me wrong and can only hope that we ride this out all the way. Once the Bell situation is finally resolved we can get rid of the elephant and finally get back to just talking football.

I wasn't always his biggest fan, but he's done a great job this year no doubt. Great results with a pretty tough schedule.

I'm reserving judgement. I just read recently...maybe even on this forum...that the Steelers have the best second half of the season record in the entire NFL (can't remember how many years back) Better than even the Patriots. Regardless, that success hasn't resulted in much playoff success. Let's see how well they game plan against the Saints and Pats. I will admit...the play calling seems to show much more actual scheming and game planning than it did with Haley...and even Ariens, but it's still early.

The red zone results the last 4 or 5 weeks has been unbelievable.

I've been a critic. I will give him his props. Seems like he needs the right coordinators around him, but that's not a knock on him. Still, he needs to show more wins, particularly against the cheats and the garbage teams ahead. If he does that I'll sing loud and long

until he wins another super bowl..

I'm as happy as the next guy with how well the Steelers are playing. In fact, I think the last regular season game I enjoyed as much as last night's win might well have been the snow game when the Bus ran over Urlacher.

That being said, the key words above are "regular season." Tomlin has already proved he's one of the best regular season coaches in the history of the game. Of the guys who have at least a hundred career games, he's #11 on the list with a .662 winning percentage. 6-2-1 works out to .722, so this year he's even a bit ahead of that impressive pace. Good for him, but I imagine with some tough games remaining, including the Patriots and Saints, he'll be closer to his career mark by the end of game #16.

We've seen similar proud displays of Tomlin nut-hugging before, especially during long regular season winning streaks. I'd like to see how the Steelers perform in the playoffs before I'm ready to join most of you in crowning him.

I think I read between weeks 9-16, they have a .786 record (or something close). I'm looking around and I can't confirm that right now, but what's coming to me from memory. The Patriots have a better record, especially at home, with a ridiculous record.

I agree 100%, and I'm one of his most vocal critics. I'm seeing a difference in him this year, things I've been screaming for in the past. Mid game changes - we're FINALLY seeing them, and they're paying dividends. Unleashing the hounds on defense - finally we are seeing consistent blitzing, and it works! Benching poor performers - looking at you Burns! Better clock management. Getting the team ready for gameday. He's really addressing his weaknesses this season, and it's great! I hope he keeps it up.
This week presents two daunting challenges to see how far Tomlin's come as a coach. 1. If Bell shows up (I'm hoping he doesn't), how does Mike handle it? Does he slap the rest of the team, particularly Conner in the face, and act like nothing happened and Bell is the man? Or does he say "Screw you, you don't deserve to be on this team" and sit his ***? 2. Jaguars. Yes, they're not that great this year, but they've ALWAYS been a thorn in our side, dating back to Cowher. We're on a five game winning streak, and this is the perfect position for a trap game. Does he keep the team focused on the Jags?

Do you also reserve judgement before you criticize? If not, why withhold credit/praise? [emoji848]

Most of us here felt this was a 10-6 to 12-4 type of team. The team is headed in the right direction, but my standard for this team is playoff wins. When Tomlin has that, he'll get respect from me. Until then, our OC is the coaching MVP.

He also didn't get a chance to hire the GM. Tomlin sucks, he should quit since he doesn't have final say on personnel...

And that is a good thing as Colbert is a good GM. Without Colbert and Ben, I think we would be on our 4th or 5th head coach since Noll.

Here is a game we should win, yet we aren't going to practice till Wednesday. Giving this team off what message is sent , hey you guys are great and then fall on their faces or you played two great games get rested up for the end?

Tomlin has this team clicking right now and put together one of the Steelers most impressive wins in recent memory on Thursday. They've got a very tough test down the stretch with road games at Jacksonville, Denver, Oakland, and New Orleans along with a home game against New England. Iron sharpens iron.

OR, and I think this is the correct message, "You guys just played two games in 4 days, I think your bodies could use a little extra rest. Turn on your Surface Tablets and log in on Monday to receive the game plan for Jacksonville. I'll expect you ready to practice on Wednesday."

Winning regular season games has never been his issue. We shall see how he does when the playoffs start.

You have to win in the regular season to get there.

We were told a couple years ago, the KC would kick our *** in the regular season. They didn't. oh, but the playoffs they would...then didnt.

Lost against the cheaters like every other team does on a regular basis.

True he just shares the blame.

oh, he wasn't sharing, he, personally, without consulting his 50-year NFL veteran DC, made those picks and shoved them down said DC's throat. Oddly, when that DC left, he hired a few of those ****** players he didnt want.

I am hearing COTY mentions re: MT.

Now, let's see how he fares against NO, NE, LAC and Broncos and see what's up. He wins all those games he's in the discussion.

Yes..props to CMT for leading the team out of the hole that he lead them into. Now beat NE in the playoffs.
