Better yet, what can we in a trade for Tomlin?
A box of cliches and a outdated bag of juicy fruits.
Better yet, what can we in a trade for Tomlin?
All of these options are below market value for a HOFer. I stated this in another thread:
You guys can start coming at me on feasibility, and age, but keep in mind. Jerry Rice's best seasons were his 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th years, then continued to play another 9 seasons. Rice made it this far because of his insane work ethic and was a workout warrior. AB is of the same mold. He works his *** off to be the best, and I won't say he'll be in the league for another 10 years, but I'm confident he can be an elite receiver for the next 5 years. That merits a mega-contract.
Watching NFL network and they are talking about panic in the Steelers organization with all of the young talent in our division to go along with what is happening inside our own building. I tend to agree and hope this will force Rooney to get rid of Tomlin. Tomlin has run his course. I'd even be open to another young no name guy like Tomlin and Cowher were when they arrived. But, I do believe Tomlin must go and must go now. This team has been forced to rebuild but we have a head start on it.
to Carolina for their 1st and 3rd
then I'd take Raekwon Davis with the Panthers pick at 13 and Mack Wilson with our pick at 20.
Brian Burns with our 2nd round pick
Jamel Dean with the Panthers third round pick
Too much emotion in this thread regarding AB's trade value. It's a business. AB is a current asset. Nothing more. Forget sentiment, forget anger, forget admiration. He's an asset.
On that front, he is a 30 (soon to be 31) year old WR. His game is built upon his speed and more his change of direction speed and quickness. He's a "quick twitch" athlete but, at 5-10, 180, he is small for the position based upon today's game. NFL GM's are not stupid, well most of them are not stupid. No player with skills based upon speed and quickness ever improved with age beyond 30. AB is as good now at 30-31 as he will ever be going forward. He will likely maintain his current level of ability for some time into the future but make no mistake, he will start to slow down, he will lose speed, he will lose quickness at some point by his mid-30's at the latest. Father Time will erode AB like all others before.
If AB was 26 then maybe, maybe you can see multiple high draft picks in a trade. At 30-31, we will be lucky to get a top 10 draft pick and certainly will not get multiple high 1st round picks, even if in different years. If we can get a top 10 pick and anything else with it such as a mid-round pick or a serviceable player who can fit a need then take it. Be done with him. Don't have his huge cap hit on this roster when he starts to lose those skills. I don't want him in a Steelers uniform with a $10+ cap hit at age 34. He will not be the same player at that age. But by then, we don't have Ben anymore and wouldn't need an old WR for the coming rebuild. Move while there is a chance to move. Get what we can get while the asset still has near peak value.
If it came dowm to a trade what would you need? I suppose this comes down to how much you blame AB for the steelers dysfunction. If you think he's a cancer then you will take almost anything. If you think he's a minor nuisance and he can be saved then it would take a ransom to part with him.
So what would it take?
Check all that you would accept.

I suggested trading Brown to the Raiders for their 4th and 25th round pick. This would give the Steelers three first round picks, players we have rights to for 5 years at a cheaper cap number.
While the cap hit would be tough, its only for ONE year. We can pay multiple players Brown cap space in 2020, and 2021.
I would also be okay trading Brown straight up for Ramsey.
Brown is worth more than that. We are talking about the best WR in the game, proven to be durable and very productive.
Two ones, a second, third and a fifth rounder.
If a team wants AB then you must absolutely demand that the team gives up multiple premium picks. One first does not compensate for AB, it just is not enough. I'd want 2- firsts in the 2019 draft , and possibly a 3'rd in the 2020 draft with the 3'rd escalating to a 2nd based on performance, and not anything less.If you can't get equal value you do not move him.
He is 30 years old, a proven locker room cancer, that walked out on his team. His value is not going to be nearly as high as you think it is.
When can teams start making trades and when would it be smart for us trade him?
Don't underestimate a team feeling like they need a superstar to help them get over the top and giving up the farm to get them. ABs locker room behavior has been child's play compared to T.O. and look at how many teams gambled on him (and at that age).
