Trade with Seahawks

agreed, the only positive is that it looks like Ben should be back next year, and these moves they are making will still be with the team.

Like 2014-2017, our Secondary was an issue, why didn't we make a splash then? Why are making moves after our QB is out for the season and this season isn't going to result in much.

Some of them will be. Vannett's rookie contract is up after this season. So he may not be here next year.

Maybe they don't want the perception that they are tanking for Tua. It's just a smoke screen to make it look like they are really gonna win out now. Because this guy who doesn't start during his entire rookie contract, isn't going to be the difference maker to take us to the playoffs. Minkah is a long term investmet.

Then again we traded our first pick. So forget all that. This is desperation to get to 8-8

True, the big trade, Minkah, will be here, but as a stated in that thread, unless he's Troy, I wouldn't take a safety in the top 10, and it looks like there's a good chance that's what we traded to Miami.

I think he is a solid player and better than James. you can't go by just stats. Seattle was a big running team, while we liked to throw it around. The only issue i have with this move is that it is months too late. Everyone and their brother knew TE was really weak for us and we did basically nothing to address it in the offseason.

I've seen nothing to make me think he is better than James. If he were such a great blocker then why did Seattle, who still runs a lot, get rid of him? They picked up a guy, Wilson, that they'd had before and who was cut by the Raiders. Vannett wasn't used much and they rather have a guy sitting on his couch than him. So I don't see how he is any better than James.

there's 7 rounds in a draft. we traded the pick we got from Jax. how is that a high round pick?

If this keeps Grimble off the field it is a huge positive for us. Grimble should be cut out right with Moncrief. TE was our worst position by depth going into the season and they didn't do anything to improve on it even with the Gentry pick.

No he isn't. James beats him in every single category and it isn't even close. James has played one more year:

Rec: 125 to 28
Yds: 1235 to 463
TD: 9 to 4

James has more yards in 1 year than Nick does in his entire career.
Statistically, you're correct. Talent-wise, I beg to differ...

The negativity on this board is becoming nearly unbearable. "They suck. They suck with the players they have. They suck with the coaches they have. They suck if they don't make any moves. They suck if they do make any moves. They suck regardless. **** this team and **** Tomlin."

Here's SteelerDepot's pre-draft write-up, with plenty of film breakdown. He ended up being drafted in the 3rd round. It's clear they were interested in this kid.

Desperation move. So, after losing their #2 TE to FA, instead of drafting a good TE or picking up a decent vet FA (like the available Luke Wilson) they go into the Preseason knowing they are weak at the position with a talented but fragile starter, an inconsistent at best backup and a green rookie that was a converted QB in college. So when the inevitable happens and their fragile starter gets hurt, they burn another draft pick to get a third stringer with a year left on his contract. There is no plan here. Its all reaction.

When they don't make moves, fans *****, when they do, fans *****. If you are happy with Grimble, then ***** away. Clearly, they are not. It was a TE for Dobbs.

I don't remember anyone bitching about them not trading for a TE. Possible but it wasn't something I remember. Most people are bitching because of bad draft picks and them not using the talent they have. How can you ***** about not trading for someone? Most of the time fans don't even know who's on the block. Seriously did anyone know Vannett was being shopped? Did anyone say "Let's trade for that guy"? No, because trades are more uncommon in the NFL than most sports.

BTW draft picks are valuable in the NFL. That's the guys you want to develop. The Steelers look frantic and they seem to be grasping at straws. Mostly because of what they did or didn't do in the off season. Full on panic move by them. And it doesn't look like typical Steeler moves.

So everything that can be measured James is better but everything that can't be measured and can't be quantified says Vannett is better? Interesting.

or they like Vannett a lot more than Wilson. They are 0-3 and injuries are piling up. This may be Colbert's last year, so he's throwing everything at the wall. Just a hunch, but it seems like desperate times are bringing out the desperate measures.

just because they are uncommon doesn't mean they don't happen. They tried to sign a TE, but Cleveland obtained his rights. VM is hurt, so you'd rather them go with Gimble as your lone TE? What if he goes down, too? Still happy with the jabroni that is behind him? Go ahead and hold onto that 5th round pick they got for Dobbs and watch the team continue to struggle at the TE position, running, blocking, etc.

There aren't any great TEs that aren't working. They could have signed a FA TE like Wilson and kept the 5th. You know VM is always hurt so why not do something before the season? I'm not happy with any of these players but that doesn't mean I want to throw away draft picks for a 13 game rental when other options were available. How about just play another OL if he is just going to block?

They could resign Vannett or he signs elsewhere and becomes a comp pick. Seems like a good move either way it ends up if it improves your performance this year.
If you don't have as many draft picks, maybe you sign an extra free agent.

While I agree they should have done something before the season or in the pre-season, but maybe they didn't like Wilson for some reason. I don't know, but they got an extra 5th and used it on a TE they clearly liked coming out of the draft. He could be a rental or they like him enough to sign him in the off-season. Right now, anything can happen. Fitz is not a rental and so far, he looks damn good. Let's see a game or two before we jump off the bridge because we gave up a late round pick for a TE.

I'm not jumping off a bridge or any such foolishness. I'm making a valid point because draft picks are gold to NFL teams. You can find players like Brady and AB late in the draft. Or you can find good solid players in the draft. You can use draft picks to move up to take other better players. Again, it isn't a huge issue but it shows how desperate they are and how ill prepared this team was from the start.

I stated that earlier they are desperate and it's when they injuries are piling up that he's pulling the trigger on these trades. Colbert doesn't seem like he is holding anything back and that tells me he is probably done after this season, so he doesn't care what the next GM has to deal with in 2020. Whatever their plan is like pot luck and they have a ton of dead money they are dealing with. This season is shaping up to be a diaster and we are only three weeks in. No Ben, no Nix, Montrcrief is a bust(so far), Vance now hurt, Connor banged up, but at least Boz is back!

for ***** and giggles, our 5th round pick this year, a high 5th round pick at that, was Gentry.

let that sink in before you continue bitching about trading this pick.

Only problem I have with it is it's a rental guy. One more year left on deal.

His talent and performance to date is a 4th round. No upside (is what he is). But the contract situation - only one more year - should have lowered that into the 6th/7th round range. Especially if Seattle was clearly NOT going to resign him.

And we only get comp picks if we don't do anything in free agency. This team needs free agents now. We are thin in a lot of places.

Whatever. Trying to salvage a blown season isn't really worth it. I would have signed the highest TE on the free agent market for depth and kept the draft pick.

I'm just not convinced at all this season isn't already lost. Obviously Tombert disagrees with that assessment. Let them weaken 2020 trying to save 2019. What the **** do I care.

You mean when we were an actual good team? Now they’re making moves when it is a 5-6 win season at best.
