There was no H1N1 vaccine until there was. Millions died worldwide but we did not have this significant panic.

Yes, it's horribly sad when anyone's parent or uncle dies. The reality is the elderly with weakened immune systems get sick and die from things that are very mild in the rest of us. A common cold can lead to pneumonia and kill some people.

I suspect that the death rate from this illness is actually quite low, because for a long time only significantly ill and critically ill people were being tested at all. It is likely that hundreds of thousands of people in the US already have or have had this virus and we will probably never even know.

******* this. One end of spectrum-flu - none cares. Other end #19- world is ending. There is a ******* middle ground. As a risk manager in healthcare I do see one bright side of this response. It opens the eyes up (hopefully) for when something truly deadly comes

MSNBC's Joy Reid hits Dems for including abortion in emergency spending bill: 'What does that have to do with COVID-19?'

MSNBC host Joy Reid appeared bewildered over reports that the proposed emergency spending bill from House Democrats to combat the coronavirus outbreak was halted over a dispute involving "abortion."

According to White House officials, the administration had not supported the House bill as it was drafted. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin continues to work with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. on changing some language.

One senior administration official said described it as "serious concerns." Among issues cited: Medicaid increases with no structural reform, no Hyde protections, and PREP act language.

Reid took to Twitter and reacted to one of her colleague's reporting on the dust-up between Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

"Wow... @kasie just reported that Republicans' objections to the House Democrats' emergency coronavirus bill include issues related to abortion. What does that have to do with COVID19...?" Reid asked.

The Daily Caller reported on Thursday that Pelosi sought funding as what was described as a "loophole" around the Hyde Amendment, which outlaws taxpayer-funded abortions, among other things included in the bill.

"One was a mandate for up to $1 billion to reimburse laboratory claims, which White House officials say would set a precedent of health spending without protections outlined in the Hyde Amendment," Daily Caller senior White House correspondent Christian Datoc reported.

Others joined Reid in expressing confusion and outrage over the alleged funding.

"This pretty much sums everything up: @realDonaldTrump is moving quickly to protect Americans from coronavirus and its economic impact... Democrats are spending their time trying to create an abortion slush fund!" Donald Trump Jr. reacted.

"Using this crisis as a vehicle for appropriate tax dollars that can be spent on abortions is about as gross as it can possibly get. Appropriate only what’s needed. No more and definitely no less," author Jason Hasson tweeted.

"Pelosi wanted to sneak in a billion dollars in funding for abortion programs through the coronavirus stimulus package. Don’t ever tell me the Democrats aren’t politicizing this situation," Human Events managing editor Ian Miles Cheong said.

You see responses by various countries to this flu-like virus and make no comment: Spain, Iran, South Korea, etc all heavily affected and you make no political judgement. Even with Italy, a country very close to yours, escapes your judgement while hundreds die.

Incredibly, the patient zero in Italy was a sick food delivery person, poor wretched soul. Maybe he was supporting a family, a habit or driven by a horrid boss. And then, above, you describe that same home delivery as your business strength. Your words.

So I asked, Mr. Judgmental ********, what you were doing to protect your employees and customers from the same bogeyman that you regularly chastise the American President for inaction on.

Nope, was just describing my job and what I do for a living. Not trying to be a big shot by sharing that info. Clearly I shouldn't have.

You're somehow drawing parallels between the actions of the US President and me, a small business owner and manager. Ok, not sure how that works, but whatever suits you.

Fyi we use a courier service for deliveries, who have their own policies in place. It's a Finnish company with operations throughout Europe. They've implemented an 'invisible courier' function, which gives the customer an option to have the food bag dropped at the front door, so there's no interaction w driver. Since the orders are pre-paid, that's a possibility. We're doing everything possible to keep our customers and staff safe. When that's no longer viable, or there's a government decree or policy put out there, we will of course adhere to it.

Our President has not done a BAD job at this. I don't care what anyone says. He is not to blame. He should not be the focal point of this. There are a thousand different decision makers all part of this. From the President down to local school boards to sports commisioners. This is a world wide issue and is not defined AT ALL by left/right ideology. Right-wing governments are acting the same way left-wing governments are acting. Democracies are acting the same as dictatorships. The difference, what little there are, are INSIGNIFICANT.

I mean, Christ, we're complaining school is closing for 2 weeks but then blame China for acting too slowing to quarantine a city as big as New York. And they made that decision in like 4 weeks from outbreak.

The double standards, the pointing fingers, the Monday-morning quarterbacking from our media to many in this thread is crazy. It is what it is. We all have to live with it. The whole world.

On January 30th while Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler and Chuck Schumer were literally trying to impeach President Trump; on that very day President Trump was assembling a task force in advance of his authorization for HHS Secretary Alex Azar to declare a proactive national health emergency.

On the exact same day the Senate was debating whether to call more witnesses for the Senate impeachment trial, the newly assembled Coronavirus Task Force was holding a press conference to outline: in accordance with the national health emergency declaration, at 5:00 p.m. EST; Sunday, February 2nd, the U.S government would implement temporary measures to increase detection & containment of the coronavirus proactively:

The markets rebounded today. They may go down again, but they will come back. And this issue will go away, eventually, as all viruses will do. And we will see in the end that the media fanned the flames of hysteria in a final attempt to unseat a duly elected President by working to tank the economy.

Believe me, feelings aren't hurt. They've been further steeled.

Look... the media is the media. I hate them. They have nothing else to talk about and talk, talk, talk is all they do. The 24-hour news cycle is the worse thing to happen to this country is 50 years. The media (and the chase for ratings, clicks, etc.) is literally the root of all evil. And the fact they admit no fault, never self-evaluate, deflect blame IS the enemy of the people. Just like Trump says.

But this is a very serious contagion. I have said maybe 20 pages ago that weather is our only hope. I think the signs we are seeing with these shut downs is the "experts" are telling countries slow it down now because when we get to 75 degrees or higher, things will get a LOT easier to manage.

It haw always been curious to me why a disease that started in China didn't just migrate to LA and the California coast immediately. Maybe their weather is helping. And that is a GOOD thing.

I suspect that things will be very serious for about 30-45 days. We are in for a lot of shutdowns. Many will die. But I am hopeful that warm weather will kill it. And the "outbreak" will peter out and things will go back to normal until November.

But the graphs for the next 30 days are pretty scary. If we can make it through without having a million catch it, we'll see....
