El Toro and Kang go yard. Pirates with 6 runs early.

Exhibition play or not, it's good to see Alvarez driving the ball to left field. That's the approach he needs to consistently take if he's ever going to fulfill his potential.

He's strong enough that he doesn't need to pull everything,

Pirates go with Locke in the starting rotation, over Worley. Hmmmm. Before Taillon and Kingham are called up, Worley is probably the team's 3rd best starting pitcher.

In 2007, I would rag on this move. However, Searage, Hurdle and company have taught me not to doubt their decisions on pitching. Seriously ... recall the outrage last year when the team signed Edinson Volquez, and the bazillion comments about how horrible he is?

Still, I look forward to Taillon and Kingham joining Cole Liriano and Burnett to give the club one of the best starting rotations in the game.

Hurdle admits the decision was one of the hardest with the Locke/Worley spot. In the end it appears to be more of a Lefty - Righty thing to balance the rotation. Not like Worley won't end up in the rotation at all, it's a long season and no rotation in injury free.

as of yesterday, Pedro quietly has 5 HR's and 17 RBI's. leading the Grapefruit League, and has done a decent job at 1st B.

they also might be showcasing Locke for a possible trade.

Nice start to Pedro's Grapefruit season. If we're to succeed, Pedro will need to also.

Don't see Locke as trade bait. At least not this season. Just don't see him being showcased.

Not feeling good about our bullpen this year...Melancon will be ok, but getting to him could be an adventure.

Pedro at first is a defensive liability...and Polanco is still not ready...
Need a big offensive year from Walker.

Looks like a slow start to me...

Morton to the DL with hip issues already. Braves are having a fire sale sending Kimbrel to San Diego...maybe we could work a deal for Freddie Freeman. Hey, a guy can dream.

free week of baseball on Directv

Buccos losing to the Reds 2-0 in the 5th

might have to switch to curling for some excitement

No Buccos for me today. I have Mets/Caps and later the Lastros.

WAIT+Comcast has all the game channels unlocked. They must be doing the same thing, opening day, free coverage. Now rain delay. :/

I enjoy great pitching, and Cueto and Liriano both provided that today.

The Pirates are basically Cueto's *****; however, they did a great job of getting his pitch count up before Chapman in the 9th, and capitalizing on it.

Looks like 0 and 1 to start the season as Watson gives up a 3 run shot.

Clean cut McCutchen rockets a 2 run shot out in the top of the 8th ....... tied up!

battle of the bullpens

******* 3 tun homer by the Reds in the bottom of the 8th

so much for that

Watson pooped his pants.

Oh, well. They weren't going to go 162-0.

The biggest thing to take from this was Liriano's strong start.

Harrison gets 4 year 27.3 mil extension, with 2 club options. Pirates aren't quite the penny pinchers they use to be.
I think they know a much improved local television deal is around the corner.

Good for Harrison. I hope he is able to keep up his level of play and the options are a safety net in case he can't have a repeat performance.

The extension carries some risk for the Pirates in that Harrison has yet to prove he can sustain his high level of play, but if he continues to be anything close to player he was last season, they'll have him at a bargain.

The Pirates have to take these leaps of faith with players before they play themselves out of their financial reach. They did it with McCutchen, Marte and now Harrison.

I would like to see them do something similar with Gerrit Cole in another year or so, but that's probably a pipe dream.

Somebody needs to tell Alvarez he looks like a poster child for the Taliban.

0-2

maybe they'll never win a game
