2018-19 Penguins and NHL Offseason

Can't win if you don't score. Oh geesh the dreaded f up on the power play is back. Thought they had a handle on it.

Looks like elvis is leaving the building this evening with a big ole donut hole. Oh well. Next.

That was a let down, but I expected a loss tonight.
Positives is they didn't just lay down. Effort was there.

Gudbranson had a nice hit on Simmonds as well.

Pens will find their scoring touch

There's not much you can do when a goalie decided to do his Superman imitation. Rinne was on, and it was just that simple. We actually played a pretty good game.

Like I said a few weeks ago...When these goalies stop playing like the second coming of Hasek or Broduer the Pens might actually score some goals..

They played a pretty good game last night other than a few "Dammit Phil" moments where he got mugged and turned the puck over like he does every game it seems. And the power play continues to be a mess. And I don't know about you guys but something seems a bit off with Crosby. I wander if he doesn't have some sort of injury nagging him. Hope not.

Sid is just snakebit. He'll come around for the playoffs.
His performance is in the valley phase. The peak is coming up again. Not concerned.
This team will be ok

Couple of things from last night. Sid continues to have this team on his back. He set Jake up for 3 great chances. Usually Jake would score on at least one.

Simon had a probably the best game of his career. He was strong on the puck and made some great passes. Shame the guy can't shoot.

Garrett Wilson just can't close. He also he had two opportunities that should have gone in.

Bottom line is we had this coming. Pecker is an outstanding goaltender and your not going to beat him forever.

I didn't win the 50/50

Pens need this win tonight. They are too close to being on the outside looking in for my comfort. CBJ is stringing together a win streak and looks like they are still battling hard.

Columbus looks to me like they might be getting hot and going on a run at the right time if they can get in. Looks like all the moves they made are starting to come together.

The Pens better not lose tonight and have the Canes and Jackets a couple points back with a week left in the season.....

Looking at the standings this morning I don't see the Pens missing the playoffs unless they just collapse. They may drop to the wild card. Right now only Montreal has a shot to take the Pens out. Philly is out. The Pens are 3 points ahead of them and have a game in hand. Both Carolina and CBJ are in the playoffs as wild cards. But the Pens need to win to stay ahead of Montreal.

The past 3 weeks in the Metro have been something else. Pens really haven't seen much help. They haven't helped themselves when they had opportunities. Most are predicting a Pens/Isles round one. It would be nice to have home ice. They split the season series and the stat lines are very even as well. Trotz vs Sully...again. A lot has changed since December when they last played.

Is there a standard to playoff matchups in the NHL? The NFL is at least simple to figure out. Top seed plays the lowest and so on, every year the NHL has me wondering how they paired some teams to play each other.

Copied from NHL site because I'm lazy..

As has been the case since 1979-80, 16 teams will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The format now is a set bracket that is largely division-based with wild cards.

The top three teams in each division will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season record and regardless of division. It is possible for one division in each conference to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends just three.

In the First Round, the division winner with the best record in each conference will be matched against the wild card with the lesser record; the wild card with the better record will play the other division winner.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will meet in the First Round within the bracket headed by their respective division winner. First-round winners within each bracket play one another in the Second Round to determine the four participants in the Conference Finals.

Home-ice advantage through the first two rounds goes to the team that placed higher in the regular-season standings. In the Conference Final and Stanley Cup Final, home-ice advantage goes to the team that had the better regular-season record, regardless of the teams' final standing in their respective divisions.

2-0 Pens after 2. Defense is playing well and the offense is getting shots. End of the 2nd half was dominated by Carolina but the Pens stayed with them.

Let's see if they can close this one out. Need the 2 points !

The Pens are just playing well. Keeping the energy under wraps, avoiding bad mojo, not providing too many opportunities to the Ca es, etc. Love when they hold the game like this.

The way Sid shrugged off Staal and still threatened to score was standout.

Good defensive effort too.
Metro is not safe for anyone

Great defensive effort tonight. Murray was on top of his game. The one he gave up had 3 pens and 1 Cane player in front of him. He never saw it. Still he stopped everything he saw. Sid played great even without the points. He dominated the puck and set other players up even if they couldn't bury it. That 4th line was unstoppable. Great energy and cycled the puck at will.

I missed most of it unfortunately. I did catch some on the radio though. Mike Lange was not in the booth the past two games. Hope he is OK.

Anyone notice how much room Gudbranson has been getting in the corners ? We hired an enforcer and it turns out he can play hockey. Nice added bonus. We're still looking at a small sample but it's enough to make me smile. He hasn't played in many big games, so that will be the next test.

Adam Johnson is fast, really fast. Nice to see him get 2 assists last night. Enjoyed Cullen's comment about him post game. As for Cullen, we are getting a great value for his $650K salary.
