2019-20 Penguins and NHL Offseason

After stewing on this overnight, I don't think this was such a bad deal.

This is basically Addison and a first for Zucker. The key here is that Zucker is not a rental. He is signed for three seasons AFTER this one, and you are going to pay for that. JR probably threw in the pick or Addison to get Minnesota to take Galchenyuk.

I think he is going to fit in. If the top six is healthy next year, they could be scary.

Rust-Crosby-Guentzel

Zucker-Malkin-Kahun

Or any combination of that.

Sick.

Hope you are right. But it is still a high cost. You're giving away a top defensive prospect and a 1st round pick. That's a lot to give away.

Yeah, kinda high cost, but I understand in the context that the deal was made. Nobody was going to take Galchenyuk straight up for anything. I figure the deal is probably something like this.....

They likely paid a first for Zucker. Addison was the throw in to get them to take Galchenyuk, kinda like when we traded Matt Hunwick we had to give up Sheary in order for a team to take Hunwick.

I have been trying to find information on Addison, but it is scant. He is small at 5'10" 179 lbs. And his history doesn't come to life until the last WJHC, where apparently he has pretty good and it has carried over to the WHL. Elite prospects projects his as 2nd pairing guy with a 70% chance of NHL service. So, I guess we will see.

Maybe it is just that the window is closing on Crosby and Malkin. Not too many high production years left for those two, gotta try and win it while can. And FWIW, if Guentzel doesn't get injured, I don't think this deal is made.

Add in Marino, Tanev, etc. We have a very solid line up. It was a good move.

If they don't get healthy it probably isn't going to matter. Gonna need all those bodies come playoff time.

Definitely need guys staying out of the OR. A lot of top guys have gone under the knife this season.

I sat through a meeting this morning reading Jesse Marshall on the Athletic. Zucker wasn't my first choice. Between his knee issues and the broken fibula this year, I was concerned, being his game is speed built. His advanced stats for this year are average at best. Marshall pointed out if you average his past 2 years he is at the 89th percentile of NHL Wingers. He is high character, doesn't take shifts off and has the hockey IQ to make things happen. With Chucky being useless. GMJR had to get another productive body in.

Giving up Addisson stinks but this is what All in, Win now looks like. Addisson is 2 years away from contributing in the NHL. He has the raps of a poor shot and smaller stature. Zucker has term and term isn't cheap.

The Pens have mortgaged the future for years and it has worked out pretty damn well.

Hockey is a different beast. When you have great players, you do what it takes to win now. I don't care about the Penguins giving up high picks for talented players (not for fourth line guys like Ryan Reaves). I would like to see them spread out how they use them rather than trade their top pick and top prospect in a deal that doesn't include a better player, but when you're trying to acquire a guy and dump salary, you have to throw in a pick.

I agree. The washout rate of NHL first rounder picks is high. Unless your picking top 5, you probably aren't getting the help for 2-3 years. We are fortunate to have two generational players and a team that seems to have the desire this year. Zucker has term and hopefully can solidify the top 6. GMJR has acquired some great young guys McCann, Marino, Pettersson, Kahun and Blueger. Tanev is cost controlled as is Dumo. The time is now !

Hornqvist is on the top line tonight? Ugh. Yes, put two guys with speed with a dinosaur.

Hornqvist completely whiffed on a wide open net.

Been too busy to catch some of the games but I watched the 3rd period last night and Vasilevsky and Murray looked good. They just can't find a way to get any by Vasilevsky though. I think if they don't choke again this year Tampa Bay is the team to beat in the East.

I think a healthy Pens beats Tampa Bay in a series. Not that we'll ever be healthy. The Bolts are deep and skilled. There is going to be some great hockey sorting out the East.

I really hope Jason Zucker is not Derick Brassard 2.0. He looks a lot smaller than what he's listed. I will not judge him on one game, but I do hope the chemistry clicks fast.

I have my fingers crossed. Zucker has always been solid. I don't think he will be a Brassard but I'm not positive he is a Guentzel either. I'm trusting GMJR on this one.

He has been solid, but as was Brassard until the trade and he's now doing well on the Island. Like, WTH? I trust GMJR, he's not perfect, but has brought some Cups here, so I will trust his gut. I'm hoping Zucker flourshes here.

Man, I’ve had this thought too. Team humming along and a trade ***** it all up. That Brassard trade was horrible for team chemistry. God, I pray that **** doesn’t happen again.

Oh, he’s definitely not Guentzel. I don’t think Guentzel will ever be able to carry a franchise, but man, he can play and he’ll be a star wherever he plays.

I bought into the Brassard who played for the Rangers. That guy never came to Pittsburgh. 7 teams in 13 years is odd for someone with that skill set. GMJR does make mistakes, plenty. For the most part he has fixed them. Zucker wasn't my first choice I don't think he will fail like Brassard. He's a Top 6 forward and keeping that role. I respect GMJR for having the nerve to go all in. I'm trusting him on this one. Fingers crossed and 4 leaf clover in my wallet.

The thing about Jake is that his hockey IQ is off the charts. He thinks the game at a Crosby level. I agree with him not carrying a franchise but 40(ish) goal scorers are hard to find.

All reports, and one interview I saw, tell me that Zucker does, too. I'm still holding out hope.
