It would not have been a “middling” first round pick.
First game he played he raised the entire defense because his talents covered so much & enabled everyone else to raise their game in their roles. I even took heat after suggesting this on this forum only 1 game in.

Steelers would have picked somewhere in the #8 - #12 range with the hopes of getting blue chip talent like Minkah, and with only 3 picks in top 11 this millennium, they haven’t seen too many chances to get one.

I still don’t know what bothers me more… Garrett snapping over not sacking Rudolph in a win or Donald clubbing guys in practice… that helmet trend is going to eventually end poorly
So there was the year they won 8-9 games coming off a AFC championship home game and there was the possibility of an 8 or 9 win season that year. Very different things. They were probably really a 5 win team that year and should have in the mix for the big fish.

if you are asking me what i thought about the team BEFORE ben went down then yeah I agree with you expectation would have been higher. AFC championship would have been the expectation or more.
