Ben Roethlisberger: Don't plan on Mason Rudolph replacing me for a while

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they had Edmunds and Washington rated higher than Rudolph.....hence the 1st and 2nd Round selections? Seems a very basic concept....I think you are trying to overthink it.

Or all three rated close together. Which would make sense too.

See if you have three prospects in a dead heat.

You then look at need.

S
WR
QB

If they went in order of need with similar value, that would make perfect sense.

I'm just going by what Colbert and Tomlin say

They said Rudolph was rated higher on their draft boards than Edmunds and Washington? If that is the case they had to be DAMN thrilled he was still there in the 3rd. Would be a phenomenal value pick for sure if that's the case!

That's kind of what I thought. I'm hardly a draft guru because I only pay mild attention to college ball but I figured he'd be gone in the second round. Ergo, the Steelers may not have exactly been looking for a QB right now but if someone who you expected to go higher falls to your pick then it's probably a good idea to take him. Frankly I was hoping Mayfield would fall to the second round and we could get him but Browns gonna be Browns.

Ben you want to win now? Play better on the road. Spend more time in the film room Ben. Lose some ******* weight. Ben are you seriously going to try and convince us you are doing absolutely everything you can to make your body a machine? Ben are you in any way shape or ******* form the QB version of AB in regard to work ethic? If you were you can be the biggest brat and drama queen you'd like. If you don't commit yourself like AB then shut your ******* bratty ******* mouth. HOF QB who is amazing quite often but no one on Earth can convince me he has made the most of his talents. After two SBs he looked like he would win 4 or 5 but he drank and partied, got fat and the only saving Grace was that he got suspended, got married and had children but even then he hasn't maximized his God given talent. Don't hold on to the ball too long, get sacked, fumble the ball and allow Jacksonville to score a defensive TD at home Ben. When you can stop doing things like that than please start questioning management. Someone on here said he's so passive agressive......totally!! He's a ******* ***** sometimes.

Ummm....Yeah. Ben has been playing his best football of his career these last few years. If you want to tell him to shut the **** up then go right ahead, but to criticize all of the stuff you just have is just plan laughable.

I still don't know why anyone is freaking out over this. The media is crying over these comments. Like any great QB in the league is happy when a young guy is drafted. Montana and Young? Favre and Rodgers? Heck, Brady just got Jimmy G. shipped out of town. Flacco hasn't spoken to Jackson yet and he isn't even good. Ben's playing the best football of his career and is coming off a backhalf of a season in which he was one of the top players in the entire league. I'm glad he wants to play for another few seasons and hope that when he does decide to hang 'em up that Rudolph is the next franchise QB ready to step in.

LOL Christ dude. We might have plucked a 1st round quality QB in the 3rd round. Tell me again why exactly you are mad?
Or we may have drafted Jim Miller part two, this place bashes Tomlin and Colbert non stop, suddenly they drafted a franchise QB in round 3?
I'm mad because this current team is close to winning it all and we took a guy that won't contribute for 3-5 years instead of a guy that could possibly make plays this season. That's it, it's not a crime to not agree with them, hell 90% of the board disagrees with them at some point on game day.

Yep. Odds are Mason is more like Jim than he is Ben. That is always a chance you take. And any guy you wanted in Mason's place also could be a dud. So where would that leave you?

I hope Rudolph averages 300 yards passing in the preseason..I hate guys that cry and run their mouth. With that being said, Ben go get #7 for us and STFU..

Rudolph could end up being the best QB in team history, but he's not going to get to contribute for 3-5 seasons, any other position has a much better chance of seeing the field this season you know that.

Well, fortunately Chris Carter was never a prima-Donna ***** who whined and threw his team-mates under the bus.

Scott in Dallas: From Peter King MMQB:
2016 Ben: I’m thinking about retiring.
2017 Ben: Man, I’m probably going to retire.
2018 Ben: Why did they draft a QB in the 3rd round?
Ray Fittipaldo: That's kind of a simplistic national view to be honest with you. Around here, we all kind of know Roethlisberger's tune changed as soon as Todd Haley was fired. Almost immediately, the retirement talk changed to "I want to play 2-3 more years." Then after Rudolph was drafted it was "I want to play 3-5 more years. So Roethlisberger's retirement talk was more about Haley than anything else. Not sure the national people picked up on that. I am sure the Steelers realized that was part of the equation, too.

Nope, I think they had them at similar levels but need also has a % in their value ratings, therefore the order of the picks.

Do you have any doubt that if Ben was retiring after this coming season they wouldn't have taken Rudolph in the 1st or 2nd?

I think this is closer to reality. I think all 3 were 1a, 1b, 1c and they were in that order due to need and how the draft was unfolding. All teams expected to prioritize QB had taken one in the first so those teams weren't going to invest a 2nd or even a high 3rd on a 2nd QB so I think they went need in the first. Then after the Ravens get Jackson, they realize Rudolf most likely doesn't go in the 2nd now and goes with need again. They then realized the Bengals were the next to possibly pick a QB so they jumped them to make sure they got Rudolf. I think it was more about need and who they thought would fall based on what other teams were doing that dictated the order.

I do see Coryea's point because typically a franchise caliber QB trumps everything else but I think we were just the benefit of a QB heavy draft. However, I think if we pick Rudolf in the 1st, we only end up with 1 of Edmunds or Washington and not both so in hindsight, it seems it worked out if they had all 3 rated that highly.

I think the fact they had Rudolf rated as a 1st rounder and didn't pick him until the 3rd speaks volumes for how they feel about Ben and his "retirement" plans. They were willing to risk losing a player they were comfortable taking in the 1st to prioritize need but at some point you just can't pass up the value even though the need wasn't necessarily there and it got to that point with Rudolf.

Funny he left the part out where Pouncey said he (Ben)told us immediately after the game (Jags loss)that he wanted to play at least 3 more seasons. That's before Hailey was ever fired. Oh well I guess that doesn't fit his agenda to stir the pot. Even before the game, on the fan he was asked is this your final home game, no I hope not, but I'm just worrying about this game.

I suspect that Ben knew the lovely Mrs. Haley's husband would not be back after the season since it would be public knowledge that he was in the last year of his contract. Of course now we get to see how Toddster does with Baker Mayfield. Should be interesting.

Nobody likes being pushed out and that’s what ben is likely feeling a little. Now I don’t read too much into his comments and to be honest they aren’t that bad.

Also, do you see any downside? Either this pushed Roethlisberger and we get a stud backup for 2 years and if Ben in still playing well and signed another 3 year deal we can trade Rudolph after year 3 and get a high round draft pick.

If Ben starts to decline and leaves after 2 years we have his heir apparent step right in with 2 years of film study, practices, coaching etc under his belt.

It’s a win win for us Steelers fans.

I see 2 downsides.

1. If Ben gets hurt and misses a few games, Rudolf comes in and lights it up and then begins the incessant talk of having a QB controversy for years to come. Not a terrible problem to have but could become a distraction.

2. We picked Ben's replacement a couple years too early and Ben doesn't retire until Rudolf's rookie contract expires and we have to overpay to retain an unproven backup expected to fill Ben's shoes or risk losing him to someone else willing to pony up the money. See the Pats situation with Garoppolo.

To me, it seems like a risk willing to take and the insurance only cost a 3rd and 7th round pick.

I just think back to Ben's 5 picks against the Jags early in the season and how many fans would be calling for Rudolf to start if Ben does that again this season. Despite the horrible game, Ben still went on to have one of his best statistical seasons and was the only reason we were remotely close in the playoff game against the Jags. So as a fan who tries to have a level head about things, it will be frustrating to see fans calling for Rudolf when Ben throws some head scratching picks (because it WILL happen). Which IMO is what Ben is more worried about than actually losing his job to Rudolf. The QB transition distraction is inevitable but if Ben is planning on playing 3-5 more years, is it worth starting the distraction now? Only time will tell but you can't blame the team for planning for the future.
