Big Ben

At 5:22 is what drives you crazy about Ben. I don't understand it.

On our own 32 beginning of the 3rd, Ben throws it directly to two Browns, Should been intercepted, coulda been a TD, and momentum for them starting the 3rd. I know, shoulda, coulda, woulda, but still. The perfect scenario for which Ben to say once again "I need to play better". Ugh.
And those drops at crucial times by the Stains. Thank you Jesus!

Ben has looked good for several games and even before that, he looked bad at points in games but good at other points. The play calling in our first 4 games was atrocious. It seems as if he has a few more options now and the entire team is settling in and getting the signals. That RPO call to pass to Diontae late in the 4th that iced the game was called and thrown to perfection. He put it in stride for Diontae to scoot for 50 yards. They really need to do that spread throughout games. That play with a good pass is tough to defend.
I like your post, but I disagree to an extent. The execution was dogshit the first 4 weeks. This young O with 4 rookies is starting to execute now. Love watching them grow and be successful.

And when you executing, as we are now, Canada is able to have plays set up other plays. It was his best game keeping the Browns off balance attacking the run. Do love the RPOs and Ben is getting better at them as well!

Watch the NFL. Every QB does a bad throw every week. At least it was only 1 this week instead of the 3-4 he's been having since he's been banged up.

Nice to see him 'healthy' for a game.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to play next year. O-line should be solid by then and weapons are falling into place.

I just don't think Ben has been as bad as many are saying. Sure, he had his issues but so did every aspect of the O and the play calls were horrendous. Things are definitely getting better and still have a way to go. Claypool still didn't do much in this game. We didn't see much of Washington. They need to get everyone involved and I don't think we threw any deep balls that I can recall. I know the Clowns have a good pass rush but drop back 3 steps and fire it up to Claypool, Diontae or Washington - whichever has single coverage. And, we still don't see a TE running down the middle of the field or many quick slants like the one to Diontae that worked to absolute perfection. They have a way to go. It's good to see them improving and hopefully, they will continue. And, I think we might have found our 2nd TE in Gentry. Dude can block and can get out and catch and he's 6'-8".

I remember with GREAT fondness Ben's rookie season when he had to come in for an injured Maddox. Cowher knew that he had a raw, if talented passer so he managed things for Ben and only had him throw around 20 or so times a game.

I would LOVE to see them try to work things this season such that the running game is more and more featured, allowing Ben better opportunities to take shots and catch teams off-balance. Course, the line and Najee has to hold up. And they need Ballage and Snell to work on pounding out some hard yards to spell Harris WHILE holding on to the ball like their life depends on it.

According to Ben, the slant to DJ was actually designed as a two-point conversion play.

Hey Wig!

Just read Cowher's book: Heart and Steel. Great read. Ben was actually #3 his rookie year. They lost Batch the last preseason game, then lost Maddox game 2. Cowher was going to have Ben sit and learn for a year. Cowher also had to change the offense to make Ben successful and they leaned heavily on Bettis and Staley. FWP was a UDFA rookie that year also. Really cool how that all unfolded in our best season ever!

Watching Brady play yesterday.....he had the perfect pocket around him....no one near him. His WR was streaking down the field. Had 5 yds easy on the defender. Brady over threw him by 4 or 5 yards. I just had to shake my head just thinking if that was Ben. Ben is under duress every play it seems and some people expect a perfect pass from him on every play.

I will also state. Wig mentioned that Cowher managed Ben to 20 some throws a game. If I remember correctly most of those throws were in the first half of the game. By the 4th quarter we were ramming Bettis down the defenses throat eating the clock up.

That's dumb. It should be a play for anywhere on the field at any time.
No, actually it was pretty smart. The Browns were crowding the line because they thought there was no chance the Steelers were going to pass. They called a play to get just past the crowd at the line.

No, I mean it's dumb that we would have that play just for a 2-point conversion play. It should be a play for anywhere and any time during any game.

Maybe the routes on that given play pertain to a two conversion. While other plays have slants in them but they are designed for more yards elsewhere.

Not going to pretend Ben is the future. BUT, better play calling and him getting under center again looked ... positive. Teams have won SBs behind limited QBs before.
If the Ravens can win with Trent ******* Dilfer and the Broncos can dominate with Peyton Manning on his last 4 brain cells, this team can do fine with Roethlisberger.

Najee can get a yard or 3 yards or more even when there is no hole. Conner couldn't do that. Snell can't do it and Ballage can't do it.
Uh... Conner had a lot more 20+ yard runs than Bell or Harris (so far). I'm quite confident in Harris, but again, let's not pretend that Conner was hot garbage. He was a fine running back when we had some semblance of a line.

Ya, that play looked HORRIBLE from the angle they showed during the game. However, there an an overhead angle that shows it was actually a great read, if Ben had lofted it OVER the two players in front, the receiver has some room there. Ben just didn't get enough air under the ball and it was nearly a disaster.

But I was really impressed with the overhead view that showed where the ball SHOULD have gone and what might have happened with a better throw.

IE, the read was great, the execution not so much...

Conner has more talent than all the backs currently on the roster behind Harris. A Harris Conner backfield would have been DANGEROUS! With Conners injury history, he would have thrived in a role like... well like he's in right now, and is thriving in.

Thrilled we won, but I still think he's done. Hell, think back to when Denver actually went to, and won the SB in '16. All that, and Manning was done and he knew it; without their amazing defense playing lights out in those playoffs, they wouldnt have sniffed the playoffs, let alone the SB. Obviously, Ben is the Steeler qb this season, we live or die with him. But at the beginning of the '22 season, he should NOT be the starter anymore. That is, if the front office/coaches have a viable transition plan.
The only viable plan from what will be out there pro and college as far as QBs is to sign Aaron Rodgers at all costs. If the defense plays well enough and more importantly, if the O-line keeps protecting like they did yesterday Rodgers could be persuaded. That was the argument from all the experts, that Rodgers would go elsewhere because of the Steelers O- line.

As far as age...dude is not Ben he takes care of himself, and has not taken the beating 7 has. He'll play maybe as long as Brady has so far. I saw an interview where he talked about the leg conditioning program he uses, as he said " when the legs go you are done." I love Ben and everything has done good and bad( talking football only!) But he needs to hang up the cleats. This team is going nowhere with him behind center.

I mean everyone just really needs to look at the last few years as Fitchners follies and the whole first half of this season has basically been fixing it slowly… a lot of people blaming players need to focus on the scheme or lack thereof the past few years

That's because his arm is not what it was, dude needs to hang them up. And I don't care about " he can still fling it 50 yards!" There is a lot more to it than that. Your throwing motion changes to compensate for loss of torso strength and other factors, that affects accuracy. Young guys don't need a super clean pocket they can fling it accurately from all kinds of positions...those days are over for 7. Doesn't mean he can't still play, you just have to have a clean pocket and don't expect too much.

Conner was/is an average back behind a really good Steelers line back then. Dude is tough, but has terrible vision, no moves, and average speed.

My feeling going into the season and certainly in the first 1/4 wasn't that Ben was washed up as much as what is the point of him coming back without the supporting cast particularly the line. If there recent ability to run the ball progresses I would say it was worth it and I was wrong. The whole thing comes down to can you get Najee past two yards untouched consistently. He will get the other 3 plus himself. Then the PA and the RPOs work. And the defense is good enough. Championship highly doubt it. But worth bringing Ben back. Yes. For sure.

Hi. Its 2021. In today's NFL, if you're consistently scoring less than 20 points, your chances of winning will fall.

Thanks for reading.

I'm being a smart *** but if you are consistantly scoring less than 20 points and your defense is holding them to less than your less than 20 points, I'd think you win.

At one time this season we were 1-3 and now we are 4-3, three straight wins regardless of how many points we scored we were able to hold them to less. Yesterday was a divisional rivalry game and it was more than "rankings" playing the game.

Yesterday also proved our defense still has a nut sack and our offense is getting more balanced and NOT one demensional at all. DID you happen to notice the browns couldn't stack the box............. and that was for a reason.

Omar, I hear what you are saying but I don't think this offense is stuck here. I think as the games continue you will see this offense continue and neither one of us knows the ceiling stop.

Salute the nation
