Brett Keisel Returning?

He may be a situational player or just simply added, reliable depth. McCullers stays and Mauro is out.

Just cut Adams...end the experiment.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd be interested in seeing your thoughts and how you got to Jarvis as the person they may be disappointed in. Keisel doesn't play OLB and is a lil too long in the tooth to be counted on for his pass rushing ability.

I got to Jarvis by thinking they see a weakness from pass rush. They would probably grab an OLB if they could but Keisel is the best they can do now.

looking at DE, i think it's actually better now than they anticipated going into camp. That's without Keisel. Tuitt has shown the ability to contribute immediately. Cam Thomas has been decent. McCullers looks good at NT so they can play McLendon at DE if need be. Mauro looks like a diamond in the rough and good enough ti be a backup.

basically, i don't see the need to add a player to the DL at this point. Maybe the steelers disagree and think Tuitt and Thomas are making too many mistakes.

look at OLB. They have Worilds and nothing. Jarvis still hasn't shown much. Carter still nothing special. Moats has just been OK. So'oto and Howard Jones are too green.

Maybe with Keisel you use him in passing situations. You can have a 4 man line of Keisel, Heyward, Tuitt, Worilds backed by Shazier and Timmons and 5 DBs. That could be the best pass rush lineup.

Great for depth, great for the locker room, great to give Tuitt a year with him to show him the Steelers way. All in all a good signing, I imagine for around the vet minimum. As a rotational player, Keisel will also make some important plays on the field for us this year. Very smart move by Colbert (depending on the numbers, of course).

because who is behind Adams that is noteworthy?

I am not happy with Adams either, but I don't want to deplete a already short area of depth just to see him exit..........

Wow, this is such a case of people seeing what they want to see (pretty much referring to you, Tape). Josh Mauro was going to make the 53 by default because we really have only 3 DEs on the roster that belong in the NFL and we need to carry 4. Josh Mauro belongs on the practice squad, in the hopes that he gets a lot stronger and gets his weight above 300 lbs.

This has nothing at all to do with Jarvis Jones.

Hopefully, it is as a back up. This team needs to get younger and faster.

if the problem was Jarvis, they would have signed James Harrison!!!!!!

Funny, about a hour ago I read he was visiting Arizona and BAM!, he signs with the B&G. Good way to wake someone up in our front office. :o)

Welcome back, Diesel!

Have no problem with the signing. Good teacher for Tuitt and hopefully Mauro if he is on the practicd squad. Fear The Beard!!

His attitude will be great for the locker room, he'll also probably be very helpful on limited time and gives insurance of experience if Heyward or Thomas go down for a game

Maybe they don't want to play Cam Thomas at DE?

It's not that either, but it is worth noting that Cam Thomas would play NT if McClendon were to get injured. That would leave us with no legitimate backups at DE because Tuitt would be starting AND would mean snaps for McCullers. This is a depth issue and nothing more...Arnfelt and Nick Williams got plenty of reps and showed nothing at all. Mauro looks like he has promise but he's not ready...inactive if he makes the 53 or practice squad for him.

I am agreeing - good analysis.

A wet paper napkin...

But seriously, I agree...but he has to get better.

Welcome back Diesel.

I had read earlier that he turned the cards down...cool.

At least he didn't have to rent a bulldozer this year.

im sad.
I was pulling for arnfelt after last years preseason and the fact he got called up off practice squad. I think Mauro has shown more so far than arnfelt. With the addition if the Diesel,, that spells bad news for somebody, because they wouldn't call him back just to see if he can tap dance.
Whether he is a starter or a back up, I don't think it matters.
As im an arnfelt supporter, part of me wonders if maybe they aren't enamored with Cam Thomas so far. I Think Cam heyward, Mclendon and Tuit are keepers for sure.. and now Kiesel,, That makes 4. I think McCullers makes it too really,, so 5. If Cam Thomas is good, then that's 6. The last few spots have to be decided by Mauro, Arnfelt, Nick Williams and Fangupo.I guess it depends on how many they keep. I am glad Kiesel is back though.

Hmmm. This says that they are disappointed in somebody. My guess is Jarvis. They probably think they need another pass rusher.

Here's one for ya...

Landry can now stand at the end of the plank and dive off into his life's work.

Roster moves are all related. You don't sign a vet like Keisel this late in the game unless you have an injury or on unexpected hole. There is no injury and as i explained, the DE situation is actually better right now than it was after the draft.

Tuitt and Thomas have performed as expected. They may have liked Nick Williams who has shown nothing but that is a was because Mauro has been much better than expected.

Backup NT was a question mark too and McCullers has shown enough to be the backup there. With the steelers taking the NT off the field in passing situations, if McLendon got injured, McCullers could probably start without calamitous results.

Heyward, McLendon, Tuitt, Thomas, McCullers, Mauro. If a DE gets hurt, Tuitt/Thomas is first off the bench as replacement. If 2 DE get hurt, McLendon can play DE and McCullers can play NT.

I don't think Keisel is a big depth need. They don't seem concerned with being that deep in the secondary.

You sign a guy like Keisel because you want him to play. When you ask why do they want him to play, the natural answer is that somebody they planned around is not up to snuff.

I think they are concerned about the pass rush.

Now answer this. You have 5 DBs on the field for passing situations. You are keeping Shazier and Timmons on the field. Tell me the best other 4 players to rush the passer.

I was surprised how fast Arnfelt fell behind Mauro. Even if Arnfelt is better right now, from what we've seen from Mauro, he has a much higher upside. As far as Keisel goes, Keisel > Mauro, Arnfelt, Williams right now.

As im an arnfelt supporter, part of me wonders if maybe they aren't enamored with Cam Thomas so far. I Think Cam heyward, Mclendon and Tuit are keepers for sure.. and now Kiesel,, That makes 4. Maybe they don't like what they've seen from Thomas, though a lot of had positive things to say about him. He wasn't signed to be a starter though, he was signed to fill the Al Woods role as backup DE/NT.

Maybe they aren't happy with McLendon and plan to play Thomas more at nose tackle and needed a veteran.

Maybe they like Tuitt, but only want him to play a significant number of snaps in the nickel package so he doesn't get worn out as the season progresses.

Maybe Arizona forced their hand and they had to make the move.

Fun to speculate.

I'm thinking Nick Williams and Arnfelt are out. Hate that, was pulling for Nick seeing as he graduated from the college I drive by on the way home from work every day. We've also been giving way too much ground in the run game thus far in the preseason. Keisel has some tutoring value and perhaps enough gas left in the tank to help that situation.

Heyward, McClendon, Tuitt, Keisel, McCullers and Mauro make the cut if I had to guess.

If the money was reasonable great move. It will be a rotation between him and Tuitt. He can still play a reasonable amount of snaps. Hope he is in good shape.

Id say they were worried about the play vs the run. and Cam Thomas had a less than spectacular start to his steelers career. I mean im no fan of relying on aged guys for anything spectacular, but as a backup in case someone doesn't hold up its not too bad... cannot rely on Tuitt being a full time starter and they are pretty young across the line
