When was the last time the defense or special teams won a game for the Steelers?

Not one of the starting give Offensive lineman is doing better this season. They are all underachieving. Alejandro Villanueva has been particularly poor. I have not*seen many pulling plays, wasn't that a strength? Too often Conner is meet by a defender at the line of scrimmage.

The Defensive line has been even worse. Heyward's play has really tailed off. Tuitt, is vastly overpaid. Hargrave an interchangeable piece at best.

It might be time to bench Edmunds. He has a lot to learn. Out of position, and not the most reliable tackler. I'm starting to worry a little about this draft pick. Start Morgan Burnett.

This rush three and drop off for coverage does not work, as the three-man line seldom generates a pass rush, and most of the guy can not cover. Take this out of the playbook.

Our team speed on defense sucks. None of our DB's are 4.40 or better guys and it shows. Matt Thomas needs to play. His speed and coverage is badly needed on a terrible underneath coverage. Bench either Williams or Bostic. Speaking of team speed, we don't have that guy at receiver anymore either.

If we lose the next game to Atlanta, and either the Ravens ( who play the Browns ) or the Bengals ( who play the Dolphins ) win it's going to be very difficult to catch them. 1-3-1...that team doesn't make the playoffs very often..

No need to comment on the coaching, we all know. It comes down the this, the Defense is poor, special teams average, the coaching won't give us an edge and is slow to change things up on game day. If Ben doesn't play well, we are dead in the water.

Look at me!!! Look at me!!! I start my own thread because I'm so important. Look at me!!!!

Coach posts some worthwhile comments about football just as some others post their observation threads and this is the valuable reply you leave, SMH.

Sadly enough the defense probably played well enough to win against the Ravens. The offense really dropped the ball.

The run blocking hasn't been good and Villanueva was the weakest link on the line last year as well. People would criticize him more if not for his backstory.

The defensive line is puzzling. Tuitt should be dominant and he isn't. I think the Steelers have some pretty good coaching, could they use them better schematically?

Can't start Burnett if he can't get on the field.

Some defensive numbers

Some defensive numbers

The Steelers Defense is ranked 30th in terms of total yards given up 420.5 yards a game on average. Although it's not counted in yards against ( I think ) the Steelers gave up a whopping 401 yards against in penalties, meaning on average we surrender 520.75 yards a game.

The Defense on average is giving up 29 points a game.

If you take the Cleveland game in the rain with a non-passing QB out of the equation, we would be on pace to give up over 5,000 passing yards.

Opposing QB's on average have a 100.4QB passer rating vs the Steelers, with 12 touchdowns passed vs 4 interceptions, a hefty 8.1 yards per attempt, and 13.5 yards per catch.

Things will get better? We play Atlanta with the 7th ranked offense in the NFL next.

One of the local radio hosts pointed out that their passer rating against is better than Tom Brady's career passer rating against the Steelers. Just let that sink in.

I approve of this message

How poor is this defense you ask?

Mike Tomlin's defense has allowed 400-plus total yards in three straight weeks. The last time a Steelers team performed that lousy for a three-game stretch was November, 1954

Nice Spike...

Lets take a peak at the 1954 season..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Pittsburgh_Steelers_season

What I found interesting is that Pittsburgh's attendance outdrew Philadelphia's, Chicago's, New York's, and Washington's...

Maybe those cities football fans werent thrilled about a visit from the Pittsburgh Steelers at that time...lol

Maybe they can switch Bud to ILB, i get tired of watching him fly wide by the QB every down, flapping his arms, leaving huge gaping holes on his side of the defemse, let him run straight ahead into the pile, he might make more plays. He certainly cant hold the edge, hes too light n spindley legged, OTs just pancake him to the ground with one hand

I hear ya....and my bigger concern is TJ Watt's game... sans the Cleveland game.... is starting to resemble that...

Well it's obvious teams know a single LT can handle Bud with no problem so all the extra blocking comes to help double team TJs side.

Bottom line, Bud is horrible as a rush end and can't anchor the edge to stop the run either, it's almost like he's afraid of contact, always dancing around.

It seems to me that TJ is getting blocked by the right tackle alone on 80% of his snaps for what Ive seen this year....

Sunday night he couldnt beat a converted guard playing tackle......not once...

To run a 3-4 u need a true NT and OLBs able to get to the QB, WE DONT HAVE THAT right now, so naturally the secondary will be exposed more and more...

There is no magic scheme that will hide that fact and u see the result, a team D that is severely in lacking playmakers at every level

Burnett is injured with a hammy

Getting better?

Secondary could get a boost in Week 5

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary has been in a constant state of flux this season. At safety, Sean Davis has been the only consistent face, with Terrell Edmunds and the oft-injured Morgan Burnett sharing duties at Strong Safety. Joe Haden has missed one of the first four games and Mike Hilton’s elbow injury had him watching on Sunday night when the Baltimore Ravens picked apart the Pittsburgh defense.

According to Mike Tomlin at his weekly press conference, he’s hopeful to get both Burnett and Hilton back onto the practice field. Clearly, their practice participation will dictate their overall availability for the contest on Sunday.
