Why do the Rooneys get a pass for this debacle that is the 2014 Steelers? Criticism is hard to find on this board.
To many of us, they don't. They own it 100%.
But here's da ting. They also own the 1970-2006 Pittsburgh Steelers, owners of most every meaningful team record on the professional gridiron. So, on balance, they're coasting through a down period. Noll had one. Chin had one. But this one isn't going to pull it out.
The 2007-2014 Pittsburgh Steelers are a devolution of what was built the previous 36 years. There were lapses during that span, but the brand was established and the MO was there throughout. And the meanness that was the pre 70s Steelers was carried forth. But that has been lost at the hand of a young man that wasn't ready to run a professional franchise, and didn't have the skills that would develop into a manager of a dynasty. So that window has closed. Regrettably. The brand has been tarnished and the MO has been lost.
The Rooney's own that. But they also own six Lombardis.
The smartest thing they could do right now is tank the season to position for higher picks. In the process, make it known that our marketable talent is available for maximum value. Build a cache of picks to hand to a new administration with a 3-5 year plan to again be a perennial contender with a reestablished brand standard. I have no idea who that new administration is, but I hope we see it emerge in January.
For the record, I was a critic of the "Rooney rule", the selection of the young man, and the previous seven years. I posted similar sentiment on previous iterations of these august pages.
