As it relates to Pat Meyer as an OL coach, we’ve won/lost games despite our O-line’s inconsistent play on the field, imo.
What is undeniable is that for years, players mostly get worse as they are coached by Meyers. We’ve had 2 rookies play pretty well this year in Frazier and McCormick while Seaumalo and Daniels were better before they got here. B. Jones performed quite well playing as a rookie but has regressed. Even Mason Cole was better before he attempted to learn Meyers’ system. Meanwhile, Dotson became an all-pro after he left and I would argue that Okorafor and Dan Moore were not “special” when they got here and still aren’t special. Moore has never been horrible but has always had to play against some of the best DE/OLB players in the league every year.
Scheme DOES matter as does play-calling BUT I like many believe that well coached players SHOULD be able to win one-on-one most of the time REGARDLESS of whether the opposing team knows the play and is ready for it.
Run blocking is the easiest thing to teach and find success at as most college players have been doing it for so long it comes naturally. They will make it in the NFL IF they can learn the schemes, react well and pass-block also.
We cannot even get our short-yardage game to a consistent level AND it’s been a problem for years!
We cannot run A.Smith’s offense without a consistent run game…and we don’t have one.
I don’t know who else has more influence on players regressing and being unable to “beat” the man across from them than the coach, especially when most have been pretty good at it before being exposed to this HS coach.
