Did you honestly ever believe there was a real QB competition?

Yeah but not every team spends what they are allotted. I do get what you are saying…
I applaud them for using their limited resources towards the player payroll rather than all the fluff personally-very frugal way to try to keep relevant as a poor small market ownership

Fields definitely won't, but Wilson might be good enough for the Steelers to be top 10-15 in the league in scoring, if the running game performs as expected and Pickens and Freiermuth stay healthy.

Given Wilson's age, it's not like he would be signing for 5+ years on his next contract.

To me, if he performs reasonably well, he would definitely be worth bringing back for another year or two.

The Steelers would have to pay up, but 30+ million per year is where the market is for merely average QBs in today's NFL.

It will all depend on how Wilson performs, but it would be easy to scoff at paying him only before considering the alternatives. Fields ain't it.
I'd absolutely pay Wilson $30+ million on a short-term deal. I wouldn't go up to $40 million and don't think he'll perform to get that type of deal either. If he did, that'd be a tough deal to sign knowing the bottom could fall off at any point.

That is a very large range. Mayfield is the only comparable. He is 33 million and probably on the cheap year. If one does as expected and wins playoff game they are above 30 FOR SURE. If they don't what us the point of signing.
First you tell me that I must be living in a cave because I think that Fields/Wilson won't get 40-50 million. Now you're down to "above 30 FOR SURE."

lol

Wilson is already getting 40 M this year. so it is not a huge jump to thinking he would get close to 40 next year

A LOT depends on what happens this year. If one takes the majority of snaps and leads us to the playoffs and (gasp) a playoff win (with relatively good #s, TDs in 20s, ints in single digits) then he should expect a new deal approaching in the 40's for a few years. If it's a season with both playing, but neither establishing himself as the starter (with starter #s) then, all bets are off. If, for instance, Russ remains as the starter but puts up Kenny-like #s, then God bless, glad to meet yea. See yea around. If he's just good enough to save Tomlin from a losing record, and that's it.....geezo pizza. Another year of the same?

You have to pay an older player for what he will do for you in the future, not what he's done in the past. The wheels could fall off at any point at that age.

Or if you believe what comes out of Tomlin's mouth, you missed that one.:D
I do for the most part actually. I'm sure if the competition had overwhelmed in either instance with great play then the alternative to the supposed starter would have been given the job.

Even if he somehow plays at an MVP level, noone is giving him a long-term contract next year for the reasons you cited.

The future for Wilson is nothing more than another year or two, with a maybe a team option for a third year.

There is still some risk involved there, given his age, however, if they pay him next year and he struggles, it would be unfortunate, but they should not be committed to him beyond that.

Unless he completely sucks, he's not going to play next year for much less than what the Broncos are currently paying him.

As I said, it depends on how the season plays out, but it's not hard to see a scenario where Wilson would be their best option for 2025 as well.

If he gets the Steelers a playoff win they’ll have a 3 year/120 million contract waiting for him at his locker

I have a feeling Russ will be absolutely fine. He knows when to take his shots and at this stage of his game, all he needs to do is manage this offense. Hit Pickens or Jefferson deep once or twice early and watch the box Empty out. Once that happens he can let Harris/Warren eat.

Wilson's getting 39 million this year, and the Broncos have rightfully been derided for cutting him and still being on the hook for the vast majority of that salary. Nobody is going to take risk like that in 2025, when he's yet another year older.

You mean we use him properly?

i knda agree. I think he is here more to save his career image, pad some stats, and make a run for the hall. IDK.. I just cant see paying him that much after another year.
