Dri Archer 7.0 - Fool's Gold?

Archer was 12 for 48 4ypc and 10 catches for 58 yards for 5.8 per in the preseason. Again, not mind blowing numbers but better than Chisholm, Heard or Harris.
Didn't realize that. The thing with Dri is I won't start getting exciting about him again - like I was when we drafted him - until he starts breaking big plays down the field. He has so much pure speed, if he can just get by a guy or two he's gone for 40-50-60 yards. I've been holding out hope to see him do that. Do it once, do it twice, maybe a few more times... then I'll start believing again.

On another team maybe he makes plays. On the Steelers with our Oline....not a chance.

Not saying the others are better but Archer is still bad. The last game (The tryout game) he was still out played by Harris... marginally. Not that it matters because Archer isn't going anywhere.

I'm trying to remember a high round pick we dumped after a couple years. Scott Shields maybe ?

I had to look it up......

1996 1st Round – OT Jamain Stephens, North Carolina A&T ( two years and out )
On the first day of Training Camp in 1999, Stephens showed up to St. Vincent College looking closer to 400 pounds than the 336 pounds listed in the Steelers media guide. Head coach Bill Cowher had a tradition of beginning camp each year with a challenging running test that was mandatory for all players. Stephens not only failed to finish the test, but he nearly collapsed ¾ of the way through. With the rest of the offensive players trying to motivate him, Stephens slowly walked through the final three 40-yard sprints. The incident was embarrassing to the entire organization, and literally three hours later Cowher cut the former first-rounder. It was a terrible end to one of the worst draft picks in franchise history.

1999 2nd Round – S/DB Scott Shields, Weber State ( two and out )
Unfortunately for both the Steelers and Shields, he simply lacked the intelligence needed to learn the defensive playbook. Often times he would line up out of position. He would miss easy tackles, get juked out of his shoes by receivers in open field, and worst of all he would consistently get flagged for dumb penalties. In the span of one season, Shields went from a promising young player to a guy barely holding onto a roster spot in 2000. After being pegged as the starting free safety in camp, Shields lost his job to free-agent acquisition Brent Alexander. After backing up Alexander for ten games in 2000, Shields was released. He never played another down of professional football.

2003 2nd Round – OLB Alonzo Jackson, Florida State ( two and out )
The Steelers imagined Jackson as the next coming of Joey Porter. Unfortunately, after a decent preseason, Jackson disappeared. He was never able to break into the defensive rotation, and following two lackluster seasons in which he played in only nine games, the Steelers cut him loose.

Looks like it's two years to figure it out before the Rooney's decide to cut their losses.

97The isn't exactly a "high round" draft pick.....

Alonzo Jackson was the stiffest Lb I have ever seen. Shields was just dumb as a Brick. Stephans was an unfortunate casualty of the Donahoe/Cowher war and was better suited for the DL anyhow. Huey Richardson was another 1st rounder who was cut in his second year... just a poor draft pick and maybe part of the reason it was time for Noll to move on....

It's high enough that it's almost impossible to trade a player for it.

It IS impossible to trade a player for it, isn't it? Barring any circumstances of a lost 1st 2nd OR 3rd round pick by a team or a year in which there are no compensatory draft picks granted, 97th should always be a comp pick and untradeable.

The player I still get frustrated about is Kendrell Bell. He showed so much promise his rookie year. It looked like that Steelers D was going to be scary. Which they were. But only if he lived up to expectations

No the 97th pick isn't always a comp. pick. But that isn't what I was referring too either. I was saying that a 3rd round pick is almost impossible to get via trade of a player. Team covet draft picks and don't give them away easily. I know everybody says Archer was just a 3rd round pick so they don't expect much from him. But show me the last time a player was traded for a 3rd rounder. It doesn't happen often. So in the NFL a 3rd rounder is pretty valuable.

If Raheem Mostert makes it past Kevin Colbert on the waiver wire, any of you folks in Pitt HAVE to go down to his office and beat him with a sock full of quarters. Unlike Archer, Mostert's speed appears to translate onto the filed of play. Unless he has a pending murder charge we don't know about, there is no reason not to grab him and put him in Archer's role.

Thus far, Dri Archer has been useless to this team.

I have an autographed photo of him on my office wall. Also an autographed photo of Duce Staley. I sure can pick 'em.

And my point is, 97th should never be a "third round pick" that could be traded. With no comp picks, it is a 4th round pick and those DO get traded. With comp picks, 97 can't be traded.

Archer brings nothing to the field. Tomlin's boy has shown nothing and is just taking up a roster spot.

By my count he's currently our backup RB, the third-down back, slot WR and primary PR and KR. If nothing else, we'll have a couple of games to see what he's capable of when the lights go on.

So what? 3 picks means that much to you? The point was that Archer was a 3rd round pick... period. Not a 4th but a 3rd. I don't care that a conditional pick can't be traded. He was a 3rd. I know you guys love semantics to move Archer down so that you can say "he was a late round pick" and not expect much from him. Fine, I get it. Why not say he was closer to the 5th round than the 1st? Landry wasn't really a 4th round pick he was really a 5th rounder because of all the comp. picks before him. See how easy that is?

Lol. Ok. The actual point is that 97th is not a high pick even if it is a OMG A THIRD ROUND PICK!!.

The ridiculous point about nobody trading third round picks in relation to the 97th pick is just that, ridiculous. The 97th pick is either a 4th round pick or a comp pick. 4th round picks are traded all the time and comp picks can't be. That's it. OMG THIRD ROUND PICK is silly when talking about the 97th pick.

Archer was a OMG A THIRD ROUND PICK!!! I know you guys have trouble dealing with it but it's true. You can spin it all you want but it doesn't change a thing. Just because it is a couple picks later than a normal 3rd round pick doesn't mean ****. It's still a OMG THIRD ROUND PICK!!!

I'm sure this was asked but search is disabled. Did we at least have McKinnon ahead of Archer on our boards

If that is what it takes to keep your anger alive, go with it. I only pointed out that 97th isn't a high pick and you couldn't let that be and had to bring up some ridiculous point about no one trading that high of a pick for a player, while ignoring the fact that, in most circumstances, it will be a comp pick and, of course, not be traded. Rather than admit that you were making a ridiculous argument you then rant about how "we" try to justify whatever.

We should have taken a CB or anything, really, besides a RB. We could have taken Cockrell. ...oh, wait.

LOL if that's what it takes to keep your ignorance going. You don't think the 97th pick is high because it isn't a real 3rd round pick but 94th is high because it is a 3rd round pick? Talk about ridiculous. Yup you guys will try anything to make the Archer pick less valuable. Somehow you guys can ***** about Jones who is a 4th round pick (115th overall) but Archer can't be criticized because he was such a low pick...oh wait indeed.

I didn't say 94th was a high pick. Just more of your ridiculousNess shining through. You want to complain about the pick, fine, just don't act like the 97th pick is some super valuable pick that is so valuable no one will trade it away. Just ignore the obvious fact that they cant.

Archer's problem is he has no vision as a runner or return man. He can't read blocks or anticipate openings. He simply tries to outrun people and you can't outrun people sideline to sideline in the NFL. Dri will see a tackler and he always heads for the sideline to try to run around him. He sometimes gets past him but by then he may have run 30 yards sideways and when he turns up, there are other tacklers waiting.

He has no moves, can;t make people miss. I don't even think he's that good at fielding the ball in the air.

Look at natural return men like rookies Tyler Lockett at Seattle and Stefon Diggs at Minnesota. They aren't as fast as Dri but they can read blocks and make people miss then turn on the speed. Both have made impacts in the preseason and look to be weapons this season.

Rod Woodson said about returns that the key is that you must go vertical as soon as possible. Go vertical immediately and try to juke that first man and if you get past him, you have a shot at a big return.

So the 94th pick isn't high but Jones was a wasted pick at 115? What do you consider high? The fact is that you guys want to devalue the pick.. period. You want Archer to be a throw away pick because you know the Steelers blew the pick and several people that you don't like hated it. You're ok with blasting Jones (even though he was drafted later) because many of you guys hated the pick. It's really that simple and you know it. IF Jones was picked at 97 nobody would give a **** about "It was really a 4th round pick" bullshit.
