We are a little more than a month away from the 2022 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers have made several important moves in free agency addressing key needs and head into the draft in a good position to get even better. The question on everyone’s mind however is, what position are they going to target in the first round? Will they go after a wide receiver, or continue to boost the offensive line? What about possibly moving up to get a quarterback that could be taken by the New Orleans Saints? Head Coach Mike Tomlin has also vocally called himself a fan of Georgia defensive lineman, Jordan Davis. Regardless, with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Saints and Los Angeles Chargers sit in front of the Steelers between picks 15-19. I believe the Eagles will be looking to move back in some capacity; it just depends which pick they are willing to give up for that. Here is why it could make sense for the Steelers to trade up to the 15th spot:

1.) It Won’t Cost Much

The Eagles have picks 15, 16 and 19. If they move back from 15, they would be assuming that whoever they want at 16 is not on the Steelers radar. It might only cost the Steelers their fourth round compensatory pick, maybe even less, to hop the Chargers and Saints. If Tomlin and Kevin Colbert believe their player of choice could possibly be taken by the Chargers or Saints, it might make sense to jump ahead of them to get whoever it is they want. The price to be paid may very well be worth it depending on who is on the board and what the Steelers are truly looking for.

2.) Chargers and Saints in Market For Receiver/Offensive Line

The two teams, other than the Eagles, who fall into this mid-first round window could both potentially be looking for the exact position the Steelers may target. A CBS mock draft has the Chargers taking Trevor Penning and the Saints grabbing Jameson Williams. Not to mention, if a certain quarterback is still on the board, the Saints could look there, too. This all comes down to who the Eagles are looking at for the potential 15th/16th overall pick. The main thing to understand here is that we can speculate as to which players/positions the Steelers want, but that does not mean we know what is going on behind closed doors. Whatever position it might be, if he is available at #15, Colbert could make a call to Eagles General Manager, Howie Roseman.

3.) The Ravens Pick at 14

This is more of a scenario that is super fun to think about. Imagine the Baltimore Ravens botching their pick at 14, in which will most likely be on the defensive side of the ball, and the Steelers come in immediately after taking a guy the Ravens wished they had years down the line. While it would be great to get ahead of the Ravens, the only team within reach whose spot is worth to trade up to would be the Eagles. I think of Ravens fans being haunted in three years when the Steelers are extending the stud they selected and the Ravens draft choice is going on his third team.

What would you think if the Steelers traded up to get the right guy and perfect fit? Who would you want it to be? Let us know in the comments below!
