Game Balls, Game Goats & FU's........week 15.................@Philthy

All that is fine, and on some level I agree with you. On another level, they are football players and paid to play football. If they are healthy enough to play, they ought to play. If Tomlin says, "Well, if this was a playoff game, they'd play" they ought to play.

But here is the thing. Let's say they hold all those guys out as a precaution, and they lose. Will we have to endure all next week the wah, wahing over how Tomlin sucks? See, this is the perfect example of the no win he is in. He holds them out and they don't win, people biitch. He plays them and someone gets hurt again, even if they win, people will biitch. Oh, boy, if he plays them, they lose, and someone gets hurt worse, look out. If he plays them, they win, no one gets hurt worse, I'm sure there will be a timeout he either called or didn't call with about 47 seconds left somewhere that people will biitch about.
ALL of that is part of being a HC for Tomlin.....and as a fan... I can question every decision that I want that Tomlin makes. And as an owner...Rooney can choose to keep his team's "never had a losing season" HC for another 20 years if he wants to. This is a message board. What are you actually expecting on here? Seriously? Tomlin's the best. The way we are playing we are SB bound? Our offense is awesome? Defense is even better? SMH

1. Exactly. Thats why i think its a waste talking about that guy. Id rather try and talk x and o's or positions that need replaced or filled. Lack of use of certain players. etc.. Its not that i love Tomlin.

2. It could happen,, probably a miracle but it could happen. Our offense could and will be better with Pickens back. Not all playoff teams have a defense like the Eagles. We knew they were tough going into that game. Our defense is pretty good. Especially if we can get Elliot and dare i say ogunjobi back. They have to make a difference. The defense kept the lid on Barkley.
So all hope is not lost.

Damn right you can. It's a message board. It goes both ways, though. Or don't you want your questioning questioned? You have a right to biitch all you want about Tomlin. I have the right to say where I think it is stupid or redundant. It seems like some of the anti-Tomlin guys just want unison lockstep with every idiot thing that someone says about the guy. And there are some idiot things. Not every negative thing said about Tomlin has merit.

just rememmber leading up to SB40, nobody gave us a chance against manning on the road at indy and it took a perfect first 2 quarters,
Many sacks and pressures,,, picks that were nullified, a fumble by bettis and an easy FG missed by a pro bowl kicker. This stuff isnt written in stone.

Meh.....the "anti-Tomlin" guys as you put it.....if you notice. Have been complaining about the exact same thing for years. The same old *****.....just a different game/year. Nothing really new to ***** about. Simply the same thing. Game in and game out. Year in and year out. That is the problem. We are stuck in our very own Ground Hog Day.

So do you posters who defend Tomlin do it because you think he is the guy to get the job done? Or do you do it because you are just tired of the bitchfest on him? Or something entirely else.

When Tomlin refuses to change his x's and o's and anything schematicly(going on for years now)...well that talking point dies rather quickly. No? Infact. That is one of the biggest ******* the "anti-Tomlin" crowd has.

That's a good question. I have competing thoughts on this to be honest. I have stated that I would prefer the Steelers had moved on from Tomlin. But I don't think he can't get the job done, either. I think he probably needs a team that is superior in all phases to really do it. But you could say that about a lot of coaches. The 70s Steelers were superior at all phases, when they weren't, Chuck Noll didn't look as good. I really don't think what happened in 2017 or 2020 or whenever has any bearing on this year right here. So it's a combination of things. But I agree with Black and Gold in his response to your #1. Rooney is gonna keep him. I'd just rather talk about other things as it pertains to the football team.

This is what I mean by there seems to be this idea that if Tomlin would just miracle that somehow, or they would get another coach, why, the Super Bowls would "stack up." It's just that damn easy. As if there are not 31 other teams trying to do the same things. And people wonder why some of us get frustrated with the arguments here. I don't think you are one of them, but I really believe some people think well, shiit, it's a snap of the fingers and boom!

Again, that doesn't mean they shouldn't make a change. To be clear, in no way, shape or form am I saying that.
The trick would be finding a better coach

Sure that could happen
But also might not

I think at this stage the majority of fans are just ready for a new movie to watch, as this one has gotten stale. Cowher suffered the same scrutiny near his end until he finally burst the bubble. Mike career arc just puts him in a unique situation as he had some success early then zilch for years.

At some point the veteran players get too comfortable imo, change brings discomfort and growth. I think everyone is ready for some growth.

I know I’d take an offensive guru in a heartbeat just to give this antiquated playbook that the whole league knows a little revamp.

Is winning 1 playoff game setting the bar to high for Tomlin?
If so, where should the "successful season" bar be set for the HC?

I think that is fair for us to use that as a floor of acceptance.

No it isn't. It's not dumb to point out his lack of success. It is very valid. To use it, however, to say this year is going to be the same, imo is not. I just don't think what happened in 2022 or whatever has anything to do with this team here. Maybe it ends up the same way, but it won't be because of what happened then. Each year stands on it's own.

It is not a successful season unless they win a championship. A playoff win or 2 or 3 is a stepping stone to that, but hell, let's say they win 2 and lose in the AFCC or something. Would anyone be hapopy? I wouldn't be because then you are the point, well they got here, they gotta take advantage of it, you never know when you might return.

I think it is fair to differentiate between legitimate criticisms and ones that are just dumb. It is absolutely fair, for example, to criticize Tomlin for not winning a championship with a team he built. But to make illegitimate the one he did win? Dumb. He was the coach. There is no guarantee anyone else wins that year with that group. Everything else is speculation. I'm just glad he won. Or he plays his buddies. yeah, an NFL coach is gonna play a guy just because he is a buddy. Well, shiit, I oughta go make friends with Tomlin. I've always wanted to just run down the field once. Now, I'm just shy of 60, but if I'm his buddy...

You wrote that this season should stand on its own, then note the lack of recent success, then biitch about 2009. Is that really just rambling?

Lets judge this season once completed, and then stack that on each previous season. We can all agree that the SB win was great, the loss heart-breaking and the lack of real success since frustrating.

You call it whatever you want. Doesn't make it any less right.

I've been a Steeler fan since I remember anything in the early 70s. I am well aware of the results since that time. It won't change no matter how much you repeat it. I believe it has no bearing on this year, so I could care less.

@Bills, 31-17 L
@KC, 42-21 L
@(Pitt) Cleveland 48-37 L
@Pitt, Jags 45-42 L

You could care less of the total futility our head coach operates in? OK there, good luck.

Your example is moronic. Why don't we field a bunch of 60-year olds who are buddies then?

Yep. The past is the past. Does me no good. Until you show me how the past can be changed...find me the De Loren and Professor Brown, it doesn't matter.

Super Bowl,……… of course !!!

Salute the nation

Then why does anyone keep records?

Diver…..I get what you are trying to say. Blaming Tomlin for every little thing nonstop gets old,I mean page after page after page. This is of course a forum,all coaches get dumped upon on all forums…..its the nature of the beast. But you do realize the buck stops with him. I hope you also realize that you are bitching about people bitching.

It’s very interesting for me when you basically say the past is the past….that it is no bearing for the future.
In the REAL world people are judged for their past. Do you actually think a CEO or President of a company,or a salesperson,or accountant or lawyer or carpenter ( I could list a hundred examples here ) aren’t judged for their past? Lose money 3 years in a row for the company …lose 5 cases in a row….lose that advertising account,don’t make your sales quota….dont get that house built on time,**** up on that retaining wall a bunch of times( I could go on and on ) Well guess what happens in the real world?You actually think that has no bearing? Dream on.

Fans are frustrated. Stupid posts are made ( including mine) This is where we vent. This is nothing yet,imagine if they get their butts handed to them against Baltimore and Cincinnati. Believe me…they will both be going all out on us. Shall be interesting times.

Accountability.

Yeah...you are right. Biitching about biitching doesn't necessarily help to tamper down...biitching. The buck does stop with him, no argument there. I am somewhat fascinated how some of us see the same game but react to it differently, however. After watching on Sunday, could have the Steelers been better. Yeah. Could have they have a better plan? No doubt. But I walked away from that TV with the simple realization that right now the Eagles are better. I think the Steelers are getting there...with another good draft and FA period. But the Eagles are better now, and I'm not sure a better plan would have done much to impact the outcome. So all the griping seems moot.

I agree with what you are saying about the past, but you are taking what I am trying to say and going deeper. What I am trying to say is much simpler. One poster keeps putting up the results of the last number of playoffs games in his posts. I don't think the results of those games will have any impact on the success or lack thereof of the Steelers this year. That's what I mean. Because he lost a playoff game in 2017, or 2023, or whatever, does that mean for sure he will lose one this year? If I said, well, he won a Super Bowl in 2008, he will win this year because of that, I'd be derided off this board.

Should Tomlin be judged on his results? Sure. But in my mind that is different than what I am saying.

I kinda feel about Tomlin like a best friend of mine I used to work with. Without going into the whole story, he messed up. He should have been fired and he was. I agreed he should have been fired. But dammit, then people started talking ridiculous about the guy, saying things he wasn't, and your there saying...hey, wait a minute. Next thing you know you are defending him to some degree. That's Tomlin to me. I wish he was somewhere else or in the booth. But then the silly season starts and it's, hey, wait a minute.

You’re correct Steelmann

Past performance is a good predictor of future results
What you do today effects your tomorrow
What you did yesterday(past) effects your today(present)
I can tell your future, just look what’s in your hand

No year/season exists in a vacuum
All part of a continuum
