The 13 colonies ceded their western lands to the Federal Gov. between the Appalachins and the Mississippi between 1781 and 1802. If you're really bad at history(that would be my guess) then research all the treaties and land purchases the Fed.Gov. has made since the founding. Louisiana purchase, Alaska, etc. Get the picture yet?
