Has Russell Wilson earned a contract?

Is it all about money @ this point for him? He saw the disaster in Denver. Up close and too personal.

He is already is wealthy and it isn’t like the Steelers would offer him peanuts. He knows the risk of moving to the wrong team now. He knows or has to know his legs have slowed.
Maybe, but 30 million is a huge discount... his market value would be around 50 million or so with the new cap... you figure tge conservative estimate is a 273,000,000 cap.. 15-18% for a starter of his caliber on the downswing... 41 to 49 million... thats rough market value, which is usually biased low when final numbers come in..

If we can get him for 30-35 thats a deal...

This is a great response to my post but thats no surprise. thank you. you are truly one of the good ones here.

I guess my thing is this, I don't think Russ is that guy that can put this team on his back and overcome the coaching problems we have to carry us to another SB. It is not that I don't think he has the skill because he does, the issue is age catches up to all of us and especially professional athletes. I truly believe Russ has the desire and the confidence but his age is a huge factor.

No Question I am probably one of the biggest Big Ben homers on this board, I think he is a top 5 or 6 all time great but even he didn't have the ability to overcome our coaching issues and carry this team to another SB as he aged, and Ben was an absolute stud in his prime.

and just for the record before some on here (not you) think this is a hate Tomlin thing it isn't. I am strictly talking Xs and Os. along with discipline. look at how recievers use to resort back to school yard football to bail Ben out when a play broke down. you almost never see that anymore and Russ needs that. we have more than one me first players on this team and one is to many. Tomlin and the rest of this coaching staff along with the front office allows this to happen.

Like I said I think the skill the desire and the confidence is there just not the ability, to Me Russ is already starting to look old when he takes off to run or scramble. There was a reason seattle let him walk and denver was willing to not only let him go but pay for him to leave.

This is not the same Russel Wilson we watched in amazment light it up in Seattle, I just don't believe he is worth 90 or a 100 million dollar contract anymore.

But hey I am not the guy I use t be either where I would record and rewatch a game two or three times, so maybe its just me missing something and Russ really is the answer.

I will definitely say Russ has done much better than I thought he would. Some huge games coming up,if he continues the same path he’s been going,it would be pretty hard not to offer him a contract. Especially with a looming playoff game, there’s no doubt all eyes will be on. Also not making this a CMT bashing thread. Moving forward I hope we let him play ball….able to call audibles not be as conservative. Which they have been doing. Let’s hope it continues. I don’t think many would disagree that our last playoff game we were too conservative in our approach offensively.

All this aside. If they sign him and there is a QB they love and is there when their pick comes up,you still have to pull the trigger.

I might add Warrior that Seattle got quite the bounty for letting him walk.

The Seahawks traded Wilson and a 2022 fourth-round draft pick to the Broncos for a 2022 first-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick, a 2022 fifth-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick and three players: tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and quarterback Drew Lock.

Cheers.

I am going to reiterate this... Wilson is 2nd in the league in yards per game and 5th in passer rating... unless he really wants to lowball himself to stick it to his detrators he wont be gettting lowballed...

And perhaps most importantly, the Steelers are averaging nearly 30 points per game since he took over.

He's playing exceptionally well, as even his so-called bad starts against the Ravens and Browns were nowhere near bad as many claim. He still looked like Joe Montana in those games compared to what we saw from Pickett and Trubisky in recent years.

According to DK's podcast last night, the Steelers were so confident that Russ still had this left in him that they were considering signing him to a new contract before the season.

If there's any truth to that in the context of how well he has played, it seems almost a certainty they are going to do whatever they can to re-sign him for a couple more seasons.

Anything beyond two years would be too risky, given his age, but they might be willing to give Russ close to market value per year.

Ideally, they're able draft a decent QB prospect within the first few rounds in either 2025 or 2026 to sit, learn and hopefully develop behind Russ for a year or two.

I don’t think that should be his market value. Like Heyward, his age is still a huge factor and you have to pay older vets what they will do in the future, not for what they’ve done in the past.

The Steelers found that value for Cam and will hopefully do the same for Russ.

36 year old Kirk cousins signed a 45 million per 4 year deal this offseason... Cousins isnt as good or as accomplished as Wilson is...

Really good qbs dont lose value later in their careers... look at ancient guys like Rodgers... heck look at phillip rivers, who, back in 2020, at age 39, signed a 25 million dollar deal with the colts... that was tied for the 13th highest contract in the entire league that year..

The 13th highest contract this season is 45 million...

If Russ continues to play close to how he has, another team that feels it's potentially a QB away from contending will pay him 40-50mil next year if the Steelers don't.

That's just where the supply/demand dynamic for capable QB1s is in the league right now.

It does seem like Russ would sincerely like to finish his career with the Steelers, and would take less to stay, but 10-20mil less would probably be asking too much.

As I said, if he finishes the season strong, I'm fine bringing him back pretty much regardless of price, as long as it is not for more than a couple seasons.

If it's one year with a team option for the second, even better, but another team might be willing to commit for more than one year.

And Cousins has been bad this season. It looks like an awful contract for the Falcons as does the Rodgers deal for the Jets. Rivers was solid for a season.

with Russ starting all year, they are probably beating the Colts and Cowboys. that would mean 1 loss this year. that is scary to think about

so if a elite QB cost mid to upper 50 million, I wonder if we signed Russ for 30 would it be smart to offer Fields a large contract to stay and learn under Wilson? Most everyone says that Fields has all the tools to be elite that what he lacks is some of the mental aspects of the game.

Fields is 25 years old if we give Wilson a three year deal Fields will be 28 when Russ is done, who better to sit under and learn than Wilson. You sign both of them to a three year deal, you pay them the equivalent of a franchise QB and at the end of three years If Justin has progressed now you have a franchise QB on the roster that's 28.

Just food for thought.

Qb money is insane... Trevor Lawerence's contract extension is 55 million per year and he is pedestrian... 26th in ypg and 29th in passer rating... he only has had 1 year out of 4 above a passer rate of 90 and never has thrown for higher than a 4.3 Td%... he is ordinary at best so far ...
So Steelers pay him.....of course if we are one and done that may change the course of action.....but if we win a few playoff games....dare I say SB.....then pay the man. This from someone 100% against the signing of him this past offseason. Tomlin handle everything right via qb situation up to this point. Props to Tomlin. And everyone knows I am not a Tomlin fan anymore. I will say he has done an exceptional job this season. He has had his moments......as ALL HCs do. We are right there in the hunt!!!! If we can continue with our Offense growth....and straighten out our defensive issue....then why not...a SB VICTORY?!!!! Get it done Russ!!!!

Simply.......pay the man!!!!!

Lol.....you act like Fields was the issue in all of our losses..... foolish thinking.

The Steelers score more points with Wilson at the QB position. They are a better offense with Wilson. They barely lost both games. Not foolish thinking at all

They lost the Browns and Cowboys games at the last minute, and the colts game was basically a three point loss after three stupid unforced fumbles and some questionable coaching choices...

It is what they let Fields do....vs what they let Russ do. If you believe they gave Fields the entire playbook they gave Russ....well that is .......foolish. The game plan under Fields was
.....defense would win games. The one game where they fell behind by multiple scores where they let Fields open up the offense.....on our final drive Frazier snapped the ball early....resulted into a big loss of yards. We at least tie that game with the momentum we had. Possibly win depending on how Tomlin felt at that exact moment. To blame Fields for any loss we had while he started is laughable. He did what they asked him to do. And it worked. The Cowboys loss was on the Defense.....which was called by Austin/Tomlin.

I did not blame fields. But their is zero question that the Steelers are a better offense with Wilson starting. Since they lost the Cowboys game and colts game by such few points, it is easy to say they might have won both games with the possibility of scoring more points

Agreed....and/or if they opened up the offense for Fields as they have for Russ.....who knows the end results. Maybe worse....maybe better. We will never know.

Here’s why I wouldn’t break the bank on Russ.
Sam Darnold, Jamies Winston, Russ Wilson, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Drew Lock, Kyle Trask.

There’s going to be free agents to be had. I would take Wilson probably second to Darnold but I would take Fields for 15 million over Russ for 45. I can keep GP and maybe Harris with an extra 30 million.

Dear Steelers,

I am very thankful Omar and Andy are the GM’s.

Thank you sincerely,

Meh...they are over rated. I can sign people with other people's money just as well and probably for a lot less money. 🥴

You ultimately get what you pay for.

They're not winning a Superbowl with Fields, while they have a shot with Russ.

Re-signing Russ isn't going to be the determining factor in them keeping Pickens or Harris, as Russ isn't signing long-term like Pickens or Harris would be.

The Steelers can make it work cap wise for a couple seasons.

I dont think people are understanding the QB market next year just yet... there will not be a good amount of top end qbs in the draft. Its likely only 2 or 3 even go in the first...

Depending on a couple of vets that may be cut, traded, or retire, there could be as many as 12 teams looking to address the qb spot.

Assuming the Vikings dont resign him, Sam Darnold will be the hot UFA, but Wilson can be up there too if he opts not to sign here. There wont be much in UFA
Fields is going to be in high demand as a bridge type QB... especially for teams that wont want to spend a pick on a QB in this class... i see numbers like 12,15 and 20 million thrown around for these guys on fan boards and think its woefully low based on the potential demand...

Wilsons $$$$ is going to be tied to the Steeles success in the playoff. they go on a good run? he makes more$$

Still the Steelers will approach his contract with common sense and the cap management in the top tier of the league. I think they will be willing to meet a short term slightly higher amount over a long term slightly lower amount. Maybe some voided years factored in. With the same approach of not breaking the bank regardless…
