Initial thoughts on packer game

Holy crap people. We run for 200yds for the first time in like 6 years, and you're bitching about route trees and pass yardage?? Cowher would be spitting in your face with how soft you are as Steeler fans right now!

I will agree the route tree is dogcrap since George didn't have anything in the middle, however it is misleading. We did end the game on a deep drag and would have been in kneel down if Austin kept himself from hitting a defender for OPI. That was a great route concept, using a pattern to get another player open, Austin just didn't execute, and he's starting to play so small on O and ST that he's starting to dissappear in games.
Yeah, I was happy to see that as well. If they can keep that up, hopefully it'll help to improve the passing game.

Agreed.

Dre Archer he's not! lol

i hate small players

all the inside braches of the route tree have been stripped away

There is some really great moments but honestly you are pretty savvy Stryker. Basically no one is really open unless it sneaking a back or a search out well timed. There just us no sight adjust that would exploit a defense. If they win one game of the remaining divisionals they might sneak in as a wild card. Maybe. The offensive scheme is terrible and the passing execution is only a little better.

What we are saying is, "Why the hell don't the Steelers use that same concept multiple times before late in the 4th quarter?????"

Have Pickens run the rub route, then Austin, then DJ. Have Washington provide the screen - he is so big he can just hit his spot and stand still, does not need to touch the defender. The receiver goes right by him and is open.

Then run the quick slant that Pickens used to great effect earlier this year against the Raiders. The pass is darn near indefensible.

But not one pass pattern the entire game - literally, NOT ONE - over the middle of the field until the pass to a wide-open Pickens as the Steelers penultimate play?? Seriously?

that is what makes me disgusted

the talent shown by Pickens and DJ and they can't score more than a rookie is this ****** offensive scheme
I saw that extend for a TD play I love that from a skill position player in general. Just a lot of want to.

We have some of that just not a lot of schematic help. Although the running game is trending up.

LOL, Stryker definitely has the right vibe. Chin would run the ball 100 times if opposing defenses could stop him. “Broad” Jones is just what was needed to get the OL rush scheme to gel these past couple games. I‘ll even say he’s is the best pulling tackle this team has seen in a very very long time. It’s Faneca’esce in ability. Having the 2 back scheme really shortens the game and keeps the opposing QB off the field.

My gripes is with the passing scheme, has been discussed ad nauseam. With the wonderful run game we are getting, there is still no play action being used. Hell, there hasn’t been play action since Canada began his term. Even Ben rarely ran play action. Kenny has a good play action set up, but it’s not used and there are no routes that brings the play action to read in the middle behind the backers and in front of the DBs. If the box is stacked, then there is 1 on 1 for someone (DJ, Pickens, Austin and even Muth (if/when he returns). Teams are sliding their backers to the numbers on obvious passing downs because the reads show no one going to the middle on the fly. It’s just frustrating to watch. The inside seam route is open EVERY time when the DB is playing to the outside of the numbers.

People make weird judgments on QBs. They expect them to be great right away. That rarely is the case… moreover many that start off great falter greatly after a few years…
And everyone in all fanbases gets weird unreasonable standards because mostly what they see are highlights…

Every QB has miserable games
in the the time he has been here he has 13 TD's and 13 Int's he is avg 182 yards passing a game, a completion % of 62.4 a QBR of 78.5. these are career numbers, I did not factor in todays numbers which would have slightly dropped those numbers.

These are not numbers of a first round pick. let alone your next franchise QB.
Most don’t start as a rookie. Many don’t even start much if at all year 2…

Based off the criteria for minimum passes per season, which cuts off somewhere around 200 passes, Picketts rookie passer rating last year was 41st ALL TIME… because news flash… Rookie qbs mostly suck… and a bunch of tge great rookie seasons turned into less than franchise qbs or busts…
Second year qbs arent that much better…
Let me put it in perspective… last year Mac Jones sophomore year 84 passer rating was the 50th best passer rating by a sophomore starter… and he basically got benched…

There is a reason vet QBs are at a premium…
People advocated trading Josh Allen..
Nick foles holds the passer rating record for a sophomore QB…

Now sophomore stats do correlate out a bit better than rookie stats, but based off of the first two years of stats, Marcus Mariotta would be getting fitted for a HOF jacket after his career…

I know we like instant analysis, but the reality is we jump on and off bandwagons way too fast with young players… we aren’t going to know what he is yet…

Exactly a wait and see.

I think we have run 28 play action all season
Picket has a 75% completion percentage, 2 tds 0 picks 13 first downs and a 124 passer rating…

…28 … in 9 games… and we basically didn’t run any the first like 3 games… so it’s getting better, I guess..

Its confounding.. just like how Pickett is a 67% passer from under center but a 59% passer from the shotgun, yet he has 201 shotgun passes to 52 under center
Again getting better, but still ridiculously slanted to unfavorable situations over and over

But passing for 119 yards in today's NFL game is not sustainable. Neither is a pathetic 5.0 yards per passing attempt. This isn't Cowher's era anymore.

The Steelers average 180.3 yards passing per game, 29th in the league. There are 10 other teams averaging less than 200: the Patriots, Raiders, Bears, Browns, Titans, Panthers, Broncos, Jets, Cardinals, and Giants. Of those, only Cleveland and Pittsburgh will likely make the playoffs. You think that either of those teams are going anywhere in the postseason? The Browns might make some noise, but only because they have the best defense in the entire NFL.
